The only issue I have with that religion is the issue of blood transfusion. Aside that they are almost perfect. Easy going and they are the kindest people on earth. So I wonder why you had to run on finding out one is Jehovah's witness.

Should A Wife Be Allowed To Take A Big Decision Without Informing Her In-law?

Good afternoon everybody.i will make this short as possible.

A friend of mine just died in luth (cause of that was anemia). He was operated upon and they told his wife to get blood (2 r.o) for transfusion after the procedure but due to being a jehova witness she decided not to get the blood (jehova witness don't take blood,is against there faith).

She had a back and forth about the blood with the doctors and was asked to sign incase anything happen which she sign without the husband family knowledge....it was only her and her fellow jehova witness that took the decision.

He passed away this midnight, she called her in-law to inform them and I also got the information from the deceased younger brother.

On getting here the family found out the surgery was successful but he died of anemia, the doctors told them it was the wife decision not to get him blood against there prescriptions and infact she signed taking responsibility if anything happens.

A serious fight is happening here, the family are claiming she killed there son which I totally agree to as well.

So this my question, should a wife be allowed to take such a big decision without informing the husband family first.

Note; it was her in-laws that were paying the hospital bills.

This is a case of manslaughter. The husband's family should sue( or maybe not if she has kids) but she deserves to serve some jail time. if she can let her husband die because of her faith, she should also have no problem serving jail time because of her faith too.

Well, the husband was a Jehovah's witness so he knew what that entails. He indirectly consented to his wife's decision by accepting the JW doctrines.

However, that wife owes the family a big explanation. She ought to have informed his family about the son's health status and treatment before going ahead with the decision.
The man's family should give her heat.
Make more sense now.

Oh so he was one too, well there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

Which leaves me to wonder, does the surgery team not go over this with the patient prior to surgery? There’s a place for the patient to sign before they go to surgery stating if they would like blood or not. And in case the need arises, they already know what to do based on the patient’s decision

Vibes and God will make a way/ inshaAllah.

Not my portion. That's how we do. Also it's private hospitals that really do the signing thing. I don't think public hospitals have ant liability in naija. You get what you get.

It’s sad but it is what it is.

I once had a 17 year old patient whose parents wouldn’t give permission for her to be transfused as she lay there in the ICU dying. Heartbreaking doesn’t begin to define how I felt. It’s not like they didn’t love her, but they were concerned that transfusing her would condemn her in the afterlife and they believe the resurrection is better to look forward to than this present existence.

Had to get the ethics team involved and we had talks about emergency legal emancipation from her parents so she could make her own decisions. It was a mess.

Kobojunkiee:
Apart from the law, right and wrong becomes subjective. Following her belief, she is probably convinced she is righteous in her decision. Throwing such things as tradition and norms at others only holds meaning if they also subscribe to the same set of norms and traditions that you do. undecided

As for who owns the man, the man owned his own self...and he chose ti sign it away to the JW ideology. undecided

This is indeed a sad situation but their isn't anything that can be done at this point. The woman was rightly her husband’s guardian by law and she choose to uphold their religious belief over whatever standard others may have or belief in. There is really nothing to that can be rightly done about that. undecided

Being in charge of the bills does not give one legal guardianship so the in-laws are wrong in assuming they should have been consulted on the matter. So the in-laws should probably work on accepting their loss and moving on from this. undecided

You mean to tell me that for instance a woman's husband was rescued from drowning the man is still unconscious but she refuses and actively fights anyone that tries to administer mouth to mouth to her husband to save his life including signing documents that indicts her if something terrible should happen, just because mouth to mouth is against her faith. She then proceeded to just watching the man die while uttering just words. She is absolved of all blame because she is the wife right?
You are talking trash, you must either be a kid or very foolish.

Yes, a wife has the right and responsibility to take such a decision. It is evident the marriage never carried family along, and its not at the death bed that will change.

Most importantly, LUTH and the entire medical team that handled the patient case ought to be sued. They had the choice and power to override the wife's decision. As long as it preserves life. Primary duty of health care is to save a life.

Foistting the decision and getting her to sign a release waiver is prejudicial

Was this possibility of blood transfusion discussed with the husband before the surgery and if so what was his position on that? Being Jehovah's witnesses no one can blame the wife personally for the decision, she was betrayed by her religious beliefs.
Na dat belief be the main f*CK up for this matter.

Ok
There's enough blame to go round, actually.
The wife takes blame for prioritizing religious beliefs over evidence based medicine.

The husband also takes the blame, because by signing up to become a JW, he invariably agreed to all their terms and conditions including no blood transfusion even for life saving conditions. The wife was only following his example.

The doctor also has some part of the blood, for agreeing to do the surgery knowing the strong stand of JWs against blood transfusion and not providing alternative measures.

What are you talking about There is no law that places spouse over family in case of healthcare decisions, on their spouses. Some medical facilities can only decide to lift the spouse a step ahead of the family in hierarchy but no law stipulates that. Family only respects the tradition of marriages in terms of such decisions. Yes a wife or husband can take whatever decision by him/herself and no one can castigate her or him for doing same way no law can castigate family’ if they do same.

You don't know what you are talking about. Being married to someone doesn't give you the right to deny them the right to live. Her decision basically killed the husband when he could have easily survived. In western world she is going to jail.

Please think well before you write rubbish make i too know no go kill you or somebody close to you.

The doctors had no fault oooo.....it was after the surgery they found out he is a JW infact they said if they knew earlier they won't have done the surgery...The top consultant that did the surgery was really angry.

This your story. For every major surgery, the doctor will advise on the possibility of receiving blood after the surgery. Before surgery sef the patient blood count will also be checked.

I grew up going to Jehovah witness... If the husband signed that he doesn't accept blood that is case closed but then if they can't provide the evidence that's a very big issue...
Anyway back then I was given the blood card to sign but I rejected it... Religion is a personal choice and it's not for me.

Op if the husband was as jw then the wife did nothing wrong as there’s a no blood card signed by the husband and wife and also for their children in case of emergencies and the patients is unconscious they follow the no blood card definitely even before this sickness or surgery the husband wife and kids must have signed this card and yes as the next of kin the wife has every right to decide the best medical care for her husband respecting and upholding his believes .

When it comes to marriages in Nigeria, there's the Nigerian formal laws and there are Nigerian informal laws. You need to thread carefully to strike a balance between the two. In this case she's not wrong according to formal laws. But she just shattered the informal laws of the land and in most cases that one dey carry weight pass the formal one
