Some days ago I read with amazement the takes of some persons on the attached thread.

So this lady was rejected by the recruiter for being "short". Perhaps the story is untrue just as many like it on Twitter, but I'm reacting on the premise that it's true (even though most likely greatly embellished).

Firstly, its crass and unprofessional for a recruiter to voice such words whether directly or indirectly, but sentiments is a huge part of decision making. Heck, most of y'all were never called back by the HR for the same reason as the complainant; only difference is that you weren't expressly told that you're short, fat, have terrible dentition, have bent legs or look too tacky and malnourished. Do you recall attending that interview where you believed you smashed it and impressed the recruiters, but never heard from them again? That could be it.

In certain businesses especially the hospitality sector, looks is a big deal. Have you seen airhosts? Have you see the attendants and receptionists at top range hotels? If all things are roughly equal among applicants, recruiter will tend to favor those who look more polished and are attractive.

The word “attractive” doesn’t just mean people want to have sex with them, it means people enjoy being around them more. It’s a reality, harsh as it may be. Businesses that appeal to the public work hard to make everything about the customer experience attractive….nice furniture and pretty pictures on the wall in a restaurant, attractive interiors, buildings or landscapes in the background of movies, and so on. It shouldn’t be surprising at all that they prefer attractive employees in customer facing positions.

This is natural.

Also, as a business owner, why will I employ a short first class receptionist when I can employ a tall first class receptionist? Wheres the wisdom? Beauty and intelligence are not mutually exclusive which means that one can have both. If as an HR, I have 100s of applicant for a single opening, does this not give me the privilege to pick "the best"?

Most of yall trying to be politically correct on the other thread certainly wont employ dwarfs in your organisation irrespective of qualifications. Image is super important especially in customer-facing positions and you're automatically a brand ambassador. Funnily enough, a lot of women only hang out with their beautiful friends while they call the average ones when they need relationship advise (I've had a couple of persons admit to this).

Some even ignorantly cursed out the country. Have you wondered why even some foreign orgs require you to attach a passport photograph or make a short video of yourself? That's right, they want to see what you look like. Even the military wont employ you if you're not up to a certain height or with a proper BMI.

That's why I always say that if you're goodlooking and well poised, then consider yourself as already having a fair headstart in life. Do not let anyone deceive you, beauty avails you a lot of privileges, but it's not just beauty.

Mods please help push to frontpage

God Bless You.

an African would scream blue murder if he was denied the right to contest for a political post in US but in Nigeria here, that same igbo man cannot contest nor win a local chairmanship election in Kaduna and he knows that.

The OP made perfect sense. That lady simply didn't meet the requirements. Thoungh the HR was wrong to voice itin that manner.

When I clicked on the link by the op I was so surprised that the Op tripitaka decided to open a whole thread about was already the number 3 comment on that thread by sherylbaky. I was just wondering what the essence of this thread is? My answer to that question is that most of us humans are too shallow? There is a reason why wise men say don't judge a book by it's Cover and beauty is skin deep.

The Op is actually telling the truth.

Nigerians like putting emotions in everything. Gosh! This isn't Nollywood movie that the rejected employee will now be the chief cornerstone. undecided

Emotions is one of the reasons things dont work here. People do ot want to hear the truth, just because of it makes them feel. But denying the truth doesnt stop it from being the truth.

The story is fabricated.

There are short people in Sheraton, Ikeja and Eko Hotels.

These are the best hotels in Lagos.

Exactly my point too. Its unprofessional for the recruiter to voice such sentiment. But then it's his prerogative to employ using any yardstick he wants. Some wont even employ you if you have certain accents.

The bolded ... would you be in support of Blacks not being allowed in hotels... restaurants ... sitting in the front seats of buses etc .... if so be the prerogative of the owner?

@ topic .... it.is wrong for the employer to not state a minimum height requirement if short people are not eligible for the job. It is an insult for the employer to later tell her she is too short. On preferring a taller woman to a shorter one is not automatic ..... all things being equal .... would you employ a tallll pro basketball like female to be a kindergarten teacher?.... or a short female? As a receptionist for Agency for Discrimination Against Dwarfs ... would you hire the tallll beautiful applicant?.... or the short equally beautiful one?

Perhaps a new advocacy can be pioneered by you in Nigeria. OP truly expressed the truth we don't tell our selfs. Have you ever seen an albino as a teller in the bank or a dwarf as a receptionist in any organization or customer service representatives? Even in movie roles and music industry attractiveness is a criteria. Rick Ross, Davido, Eniola and even you I'm certain you don't vibe to unattractive people.

This sounds totally crude and primitive. Being a receptionist is not showbiz, military or beauty pergentary. There is absolutely nothing wrong in an albino being a bank teller, if he is qualified and can do the job.

Nonsense, It depends on the job advert. E.g What does height or physical appearance got to the with you being a good programmer.

You need to go out more, there are many big organization having staff that are physically challenged and didn't have any issues with them.

People who are short are still keeping employed same with tall people.
Why saying is because you are short and tall you won't be given a particular job.even if that's the cause why saying it to the employee?(

The OP wrote nonsense. It's just like truly wealthy men, they dress modestly, but you see this rich man wannabes, you see them wearing gold chain, expensive stuffs.

Great companies all over the world don't look at such nonsense but qualifications and effectiveness.

If the op thinks employing physically unattractive people will affect business growth, he's still a learner, and probably doesn't have any business he's managing.

Why would the height of a receptionist matter when you provide top notch services in your hotel?

Discrimination is a criminal offence in countries where things work. It is this stupid mentality that makes companies in Nigeria reject workers above 30 years of age. Look at where we are.

Nigeria, a country in a mess is giving advice on recruitment of staff in companies. Stupid people in position of privilege.

In advance country where things work out fine. It doesn't matter if you are short or not. As long as you are useful to the organisation. You are good to go.
