Give him an unofficial query that is not in the file, ask him to explain within 24 hours why he should not be sanctioned as par company policy, this will make him desist and know you are serious.
Then forgive him.
The only query is for frightening only oh.
Times are hard.

Hi,
Please I will try to be brief as possible as i can.
I work with a firm that sells construction equipment, and head the logistics and warehouse department. I have this junior colleague that has been with the company for 8years(long before i joined cos i have only been there for 2+ years), he is experienced and good at his job.
But yesterday i caught this guy trying to steal two pieces of 70ah batteries, it really broke my heart because he can not even sell this things for up to 100k. I have tried everything in my capacity to make sure those working under my dept enjoy every benefits that are due to them; from hazard allowance, overtime, and so on. I sign all this allowance without asking questions even when sometimes some of them are questionable. I was doing all this so that nobody has any reason to steal and they have small change to augment their salary.
Personally i hate theft and frown at it and they all know it cos i keep preaching against this at every meeting, and if i escalate this to the management at the HQ in Lagos, he might be sack without benefits after 8 long years and he is a family man.

Though I have scold him and told him he would hear from me by Monday morning, the truth is given the situation I don't know what to do with this guy.

I am really confuse cos i don't even know how long he has been doing this shit.

Tell management the same thing you told us, of course in a professional manner. Let them make the final decision. It will curtail future happenings with both him and others.

Follow the management policy in this instance. It's there for a reason!

Many people here are just being Emotional and saying don't report or do this and that...

no 1: you signed rules and regulations before you were employed. You have to follow the company policy
no 2: I am very sure if it was from the people who are saying you should forgive that he stole from, by now he would have been burnt
no 3: Don't forget your job is o the line for not reporting, You are now an accomplice.

Forgive him but chat with him on WhatsApp save it.in case he try to come up any move that will go against you in future trust me he would be planing something

I think an apology letter from him suffices better than the WhatsApp chat. Or better still the two should be done. The apology letter should be kept securely either in the OP's house or a scanned copy in the cloud.

I also hate stealing and people like that are the reasons why many people don't like setting up companies in Nigeria.

For me,I will also advice that u should report him and let him live in regret afterwards.

U spare him, tomorrow he will do more than this.

Oga, try your best appeal to the person not to steal again and tell him what will happen when you report him if he does it the next time.. There's no excuse for theft! This country hard, you never can tell what will happen when that guy looses his job and has the bad belle for you cos you reported him. People can be very funny

Please forgive, he may have made a wrong decision due to greed or a desperate need. But if it happens again please throw him away.

Don't report him, don't scold him, don't let him loose his job... Reason many small scale businesses could not strive, & reason Nigeria is where it is. When disciplinary actions are seen as witch hunting.

Companies has code of conduct and disciplinary measures for every misconduct and atrocities committed by workers.Meanwhile for every action, there must be an equal consequences.I can guarantee you that that was not his first time of stealing from the company. If all and sundry in the company steal, how will the company survive financilly.Reporting his case is not an act of wickedness bro and forgiving him will be an encouragement for wannabe thieves in the company. This case can be likened to our shithole country where politicians and public office holders embezzled public funds with high Hopes of getting a fair judgment if they are caught in the act.Eventually they keep getting fair judgment and that's why corruption keeps skyrocketing in the country.

In your shoes, I will report to management and have him sacked. He is a family man and that is enough reason for him not to steal. For now, do not eat or drink water in the office. Also watch your back carefully. Such people are dangerous.

Make sure you report and do it officially. Move the burden to your superior. By the time a person is caught it is way beyond the first time.

Otherwise eventually your auditors will come around, and then you will be roped in for connivance, fraud or incompetence.

If as you say you made so many concessions and stuck your neck out to ensure everyone was doing fine, then you owe him nothing and his actions are a slap in your face.

The only risk is that the guy is actually doing the stealing on behalf of ogas at the top, in which case it can backfire.

you have a good heart op and God bless people like you.give him a second chance but before then state your reasons for forgiving him.and tell him that u're giving him the very last chance if at all he wishes to work there.
Re: I Caught A Junior Colleague Stealing by Nobody: 2:47pm On Mar 27, 2022
Call him sit him down since you are his superior document every conversation you are having with him, let him know the implications and let him sign an agreement with you that if anything miss, he will be held responsible for since. I would have advice you get the management involved, but since he is a family man, mouth depends on him. If you are older than him in terms of age, draw his ear very well and tell him, you will report to management anytime anything goes missing.. Hope he is not a yoruba, cos those guys its in their blood and they will even brag and tell you laslas, there are other companies out there that will need his service
Re: I Caught A Junior Colleague Stealing by rajiedreez: 2:47pm On Mar 27, 2022
This is very funny sha, everyone is saying that he should forgive him. Good its a good idea to forgive him because things are hard in the country but its the same employee like that thief that will not hesitate to call out their bosses and say their work place is toxic if the table is turned around.

Some bosses are bad and likewise some employees are crooks.

Just query him for incompetence and if the management asks what he did tell them he didn't do his job appropriately. And you just want to warn him to sit up and be more diligent.
Re: I Caught A Junior Colleague Stealing by Shyboyk(m): 2:48pm On Mar 27, 2022
Since this is the first time give him a strong warning but don’t report him Abeg things hard
Re: I Caught A Junior Colleague Stealing by UC92: 2:51pm On Mar 27, 2022
In the best interest of your organization, it is good that you report him to the senior management.
If you fail to do that you are indulging in unethical practice, who knows if he will implicate you whenever he is caught because he is directly under your supervision.

Re: I Caught A Junior Colleague Stealing by uptoHim(m): 2:53pm On Mar 27, 2022
I hardly comment here. I'm just angry with the nonsense "forgive him" talks I am seeing here. If you take decisions based on emotions, then you are too weak to be a leader. Did he wrong you? No. Did he offend you personally? No. He went against the company policy and as his manager, it's your responsibility to deal with it according to your code of conduct/policy or what have you. Any other way, it means you are also culpable, or you don't have what it takes to be a leader.

And know that others are looking at you, how you will handle this. And they will not hesitate to use it against you tomorrow. I'm even worried that as a leader in your company, you are here asking us what to do to a surbodinate that stole. What if he was your superior? Is this how we will change the country? Well, that's why we are where we are today... Many thieves and many enablers that can't hold people accountable for their actions.
