I'm really impressed by most of the comments on the first page. It simply shows that I'm not alone. We still some people in this country who detest dishonesty.

Hi,
Please I will try to be brief as possible as i can.
I work with a firm that sells construction equipment, and head the logistics and warehouse department. I have this junior colleague that has been with the company for 8years(long before i joined cos i have only been there for 2+ years), he is experienced and good at his job.
But yesterday i caught this guy trying to steal two pieces of 70ah batteries, it really broke my heart because he can not even sell this things for up to 100k. I have tried everything in my capacity to make sure those working under my dept enjoy every benefits that are due to them; from hazard allowance, overtime, and so on. I sign all this allowance without asking questions even when sometimes some of them are questionable. I was doing all this so that nobody has any reason to steal and they have small change to augment their salary.
Personally i hate theft and frown at it and they all know it cos i keep preaching against this at every meeting, and if i escalate this to the management at the HQ in Lagos, he might be sack without benefits after 8 long years and he is a family man.

Though I have scold him and told him he would hear from me by Monday morning, the truth is given the situation I don't know what to do with this guy.

I am really confuse cos i don't even know how long he has been doing this shit.
Warn him, if he refuses to stop, report him. Make him no go thief something very expensive wey go later cast u.

Ask him to write a letter stating his offense and why you feel he should not be punished. This letter remains with you. But it's a buffer against conspiracy in future should such arise from him or his cohort. Humans are dicey.

Please don't escalate to the management. Things are hard. Give him second chance.

Please don’t report him yet as even you sef don Dey confused on ur next line of action based on that you don’t want to complicate his life for him. If you report him on Monday and he gets sacked, you might end up feeling bad about your action.

Wetin me go do next b dis, I will call him and have a chat with him outside of the working premises. I will let him know I am doing him a favor by letting him go off the hook but it will be on the condition that he tells you about all the shady dealings going on there with other staffs too and how they do it( might be he is not the only one doing it). Buy his loyalty, make him see that honesty pays, block all the loopholes and you will see someone who will be loyal to you for life.

I have been down this road before, I reported the guy and got him arrested. I later started feeling bad that my decision was too hasty and even after that theft never reduced but the guys under me just got wiser.

IP listen to this guy. He has some for you.

But his loyalty. From there you would get all the info if the thieves in the company.

Ask yourself this questions, then decide:
- What does your company's policy say about such situations?
- Do you know that not reporting him is collusion?
- Do you value your integrity?
- What kind of example are you setting for other staff?
- What do you think will happen if the management finds out about this through someone else?
- Are you willing to lose your job to save his, because he's a "family man"?
- If you owned the company and you discover that your manager colluded in hiding such from you, will you still trust him/her?

This goes on almost every company.

Exactly. I know someone that stole 2million after 9months of working in a company. Such people don't need mercy.

You can tell management that you doubt his integrity. If they ask what prompted such thoughts, just say that you almost caught him committing theft. Let management decide his fate.....Economy hard doesn't give one the right to steal from your employer.

Call his attention and warn him not to try it again. Your reporting him may lead to your own disaster. Man created by God is dangerous. I worked with such group of people for a period of twenty 23 years.

@ Op... simply go with these advice. No truer words have ever been spoken. smiley
Re: I Caught A Junior Colleague Stealing by connkg(m): 5:17pm On Mar 27, 2022
@OP,
Usually, the company policy will entail that you issue a query, demanding an explanation for his actions. In particular, he should explain what he was doing with un-issued supplies.
Give him 24hours to respond.
If he has no cogent reason, you can call him in for verbal questioning so you can make a decision.
If you like him and he has a fair reason, recommend to the Training department that staff need a session on Company Policy, Material Issuance and Regulation.

Don't report him. Tell him he is putting you in danger by doing that and thatz why you make sure all their allowances are prompt.
Forgive him, if he does it again ..no think am, report the theft to mgt.

Please it's so hard to get a job now. Think of it this way, the company isn't going to add to your salary if he's sacked. So consider the plight of his family and let him off with a stern warning.
Re: I Caught A Junior Colleague Stealing by oochi123(f): 5:44pm On Mar 27, 2022
Warn him for the second time and don't report him.
A staff stole something and the security officer reported him.but unfortunately he was arrested.
The MD of the place where I work, wanted to forgive him,but the staff threatened the security officer and the MD changed his mind and sacked him.
Just yesterday the security officer lost his son as he was going to work and died.
Pple are saying the sacked staff killed him.
Just be careful.

Didn't the same Bible tell you that let him who hasn't sinned cast the first stone?
There is nowhere they don't steal fowl in the nigt, just that the mechanisms everyone use is quite different. Have you been 100% honest to your company yourself? You no holy pass.

let me tell you a story. It happened to me.......

I was Oga in a company few years ago. A very hardworking guy who is very near promotion stole some stuffs. Very cheap stuff not even up to 10k but because of his hardworking nature and also because his wife just put to bed I let it slide.

Less than a month later, a chronic thief who I had set several traps for I finally caught him and fired him. Guess what? He accosted the boss on the road and told him I fired him for stealing but left other people to steal freely. If not for my unmatched integrity I for don chop sacking too.

My point is that if you don't fire him now he might find a way to pull your down or even implicate you .

Be careful. Thieves in most cases don't deserve any form of pity

Your job is to report to management and let them make their decision. He knew the consequences before he tried to steal.
If you fail to do the needful, other might tread that path and you might be culpable

try to interrogate him and find out his accomplice with a video and voice record of him.he should explain what he was doing with un-issued supplies in a letter.
If you like him and he has a fair reason, recommend to the Training department that staff need a session on Company Policy, Material Issuance and Regulation.
recommend that the management should install cctv in all the office and security at store. never tell him he will be responsible for any missing item so you can find his accomplice if he lied, never challenge his accomplice cos they might deny and transfer some of the accomplice he mention if you found any clue of them having stealing mindset. if after this he attempt anything bad, try to listen to lies and sack him cos thru that you can catch his accomplice

Since he is working under you, if you cover him, you will be seen as aiding him

If you report him, he will see you as being wicked

Ask for his transfer up another unit and let someone with good character replace him

With the above, he will still retain his job
