The gods must drink first. Alcohol is spiritual and in the past before you can consult the gods, you must be under the influence of alcohol. So it’s like saying, gods let’s all get under the influence together and conjure things together.

There are some blessings that our forefathers took to the their grave that only drinks (especially alcoholic drinks) can actually restore the blessings back to us.

To appease the gods

Some people or traditionalist do it as a form of libation (an offering to a deity/the gods).

Many pour a little to the ground to ascertain if the drink is in good condition (if it foams/bubbles) or if it is flat (no or less bubbles). Flat drink gives suspicion on the quality of the drink because drinks are mostly effervescent and a good one should form bubble.

Others just dey do am ni, no reason. Just wan feel among.
