Federal Government on Wednesday said the ongoing
strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities would soon
be called off.
This was as it said there are no plans to establish an
alternative payment table for all the labour unions in tertiary
institutions.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, disclosed
this while briefing State House Correspondents at the end of
the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided over
by the President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) at
the Council Chambers of the presidential villa, Abuja.
Despite four months into the strike already, Ngige assured
Nigerians that efforts were underway to resolve the ongoing
dispute largely fueled by payment platforms.
ASUU, which grounded academic activities in Nigerian
universities since February 14, 2022, had insisted on the use of
its own generated payment platform, University Transparency
and Accountability Solution. It premised its demand on claims that the government-backed Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System was shortchanging its members. However, the Federal Government, last March claimed that UTAS was unfit for wide-scale use as it failed three integrity tests. Aside from UTAS, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Educational Institutions also proposed their payment platform: Universities Peculiar Personnel Payroll System. Ngige argued that the Federal Government was indeed engaging with ASUU, despite notions that it has been snubbing the union. |

Well it's the sad reality. The govt is looking for all ways to run away from their responsibilities and the unions won't give in either. We somehow have to look for how to survive in this hard times. At the end we hope victory will make up for these times. God will help us all and make a way. AmandaLuv: |

Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, and the Senior
Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, SSANU,
have extended their strike action by additional two
months.
The extension was contained in a circular to branch
chairmen of the two unions and made available to
DAILY POST in Ilorin on Friday.
The circular dated June 21, 2022, was jointly
signed by the General Secretary of NASU, Prince
Peters. A. Adeyemi, and Mohammed. N. Ibrahim.
The circular noted some successes recorded on the
issues in dispute but said ” in view of the fact that
government is still a long way from effectively
resolving the issues in contention, it is only
expedient that we allow the process to be fully
concluded before directing the end of the strike.
“Consequently, you are hereby informed that the
strike has been extended by two months within
which we are hoping that all the contentious issues
would have been effectively laid to rest.
“The two months extension is with effect from
Friday, 24th June 2022,” the circular stated.
It mentioned that success had been recorded by
the JAC of NASU and SSANU over the payment of
the minimum wage consequential adjustment
arrears, which all staff in the University system
benefitted.
“We have also recorded success in the restoration
of Responsibility Allowance to deserving members
of NASU and SSANU, ditto, the correction in the
payment of Hazard Allowance from N150,000 to
N360,000 per annum to deserving members in the
SSANU document.
“However, there has been no commitment by the
government to pay the arrears of Earned Allowances
being owed our members,” the circular disclosed.
” We have continued to follow up on the resolution
reached with the government at the Tripartite Plus
meeting held on Thursday, 12th May, 2022, with
respect to the testing of our University Peculiar
Personnel and Payroll System (U3PS) software with
the National Information Technology Development
Agency, NITDA.
“The three payment solutions, U3PS, UTAS and
IPPIS, are currently being subjected to daily tests
which have spanned three weeks so far and are still
ongoing,” the circular further informed.
The circular thanked members of the unions for
sustaining the strike action even in the face of
denials of salaries, threats and harassment, saying
it has continued to give the national leadership the
needed strength and force to forge ahead on the
demands.
It urged them to keep up the spirit across the
branches, saying “as we are slowly inching closer
to victory and disregard various rumours and
misinformation, especially on social media, but rely
on the national leaders for factual and true
information on the status of the ongoing struggle.” |
