Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has explained why he cannot be a running mate to a former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, in the forthcoming presidential election.

Both men are in the race to become the next president when President Muhammadu Buhari completes his second term in office in May 2023.

While Kwankwaso is the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Obi will fly the flag of the Labour Party in the poll.

Amid calls for the duo to form an alliance as an alternative for Nigerians besides the two major political parties – All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the former Kano governor wants his Anambra counterpart to accept to be his running mate.

“The northerner voters have made up their minds on what to do; certainly NNPP, nobody can change it,” he said during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics where he was asked who the people of the North would vote for.

Although Kwankwaso said he would not mind the opportunity to become a vice president since he has no job at the moment, he explained the rationale behind contesting the presidential election and a candidate and not a running mate to a south-easterner.

“Unfortunately, there are many issues in the South East, and a northern voter is the worst-hit in this issue of maladministration in this country,” he asserted. “But even under that circumstance, a northern voter also believes that he is better with one united Nigeria.

“Therefore, most of the things that are happening in the South, especially in the South East; people are not comfortable with that and as long as you have somebody from there in any party, it will be very difficult for the northern voters to vote, and that’s the situation now.”

Opportunity For South East?
The NNPP presidential candidate, however, did not rule out the possibility of forming an alliance with his Labour counterpart, but only if the latter accepts to be his running mate.

According to him, his team is making consultations with various individuals, groups, and political parties in order to take the leadership of the country at all levels.

Kwankwaso stressed that an alliance with Obi was highly likely with the aim of coming together to work as a family and give Nigerians an alternative to the PDP and the APC.

He said, “We have seen the situation in the country today in terms of economy, in terms of security, in terms of education and infrastructure … and the voters of this country are yearning for a change and I believe we will only be fair to ourselves if we come together and bring out a real alternative for the people of this country and I am happy to say that even at the moment, the NNPP, even though very new in some ways – just about four months – is everywhere in this country.”

On the party to be used should an alliance is formed, the presidential candidate responded, “My belief is that there are so many modalities that can be worked out, it’s just a matter of getting the right calibre of people to sit down and look at the situation as it is.

“The major issue as it stands today is the issue of who becomes the president and who becomes the vice president and I believe this is the time really to advise – especially those who are positively behind the candidate of the Labour Party – that for me, I have seen an opportunity for the South East to be relevant in the next dispensation.”

“In PDP, they (the South East) are completely out, and so in the APC. The only opportunity now is the NNPP. I believe it is in the interest of Labour Party and the NNPP, and even in the interest of this country.”

That's because most of the Northerners are not well educated, are very poor and believe in tribal and religious politics.

The moment you expose them to know their rights, most Politicians from the North will not have a say.

Reason why they keep them in servitude and ignorance to be used as voting tools.

They know Peter Obi will work towards a solution to the poverty and illiteracy among Hausa/Fulani's in the North, so the politicians from the North don't want him. But the poor Hausa/Fulani's will become wiser before the elections.

Why are they telling us?

They should go ahead and do what they want.

Obi will never be poor again I'm his life, not his children nor great grand children will ever be poor.

Its a xhoce before Nigerians to change things now or continue crying.

Obi is the only way out.

Ladies and gentlemen, there you have it. Kwankwaso just wanted to ride on Obi's popularity, use him after 8 years and then they'll dump him for another northerner.

If the northerners want to claim smartness, then southerners should stop voting for them too, because they certainly can't win the presidency without the south.

The south can form new alliance with North Central..... Places like Benue, Plateau, Nassarawa, Taraba, Abuja and maybe Adamawa are easier to penetrate than NW or NE.

The north has been ruling Nigeria for more than half of the years in our independence, have we gotten any better?

Buhari is from the North West, a former retired General, a man who claimed to lead the insurgency from the front line.... is insecurity not worse under him?

Instead of you to be convincing the average northerner how their northern political elites including yourself have failed them and encouraging them to try other tribes, you're here spewing jargons.

Even if you enter, what exactly will you do differently from Buhari?

Or was it not this same Kwankwaso that travelled to Ibadan to free some Fulani bandits arrested for terrorizing the State?

The man is not being truthful. There's war going in the North East and North West far worse than what is going on in the south East. Such statement stems from either arrogance of the person making it or hatred for the south East

With all these political calculations and the use of irrelevant factors to determine who will pilot the affairs of this country for another four years, I have one message for Nigerian youths: PLEASE be serious with your lives.

We are not ready for any serious nation-building. The landlords of this country have weaponized all kinds of things to keep us perpetually poor.

This isn't for all youths anyways because it's obvious some youths are satisfied with the way things are, and it's because of one thing: they are benefiting from the system.

If you don't want to keep lamenting for another four years, please try all your means to get serious with your life and never wait for this Satanic government.

It's just so disheartening that we are considering two known thieves as our next President. Brace up Nigerians!!!

Kwankwaso doesn't know that he needs Obi more than Obi needs him. I wonder what's giving him all this confidence.

He just spoke like the average Nigerian full with ethnoreligious sentiments.

I still think Kwankwaso may join either APC or PDP at the long run. I don't see him contesting this election under NNPP.

Nigeris is not for you and you refuse to accept this fact. Stolkholm syndrom. Why is the fool Peter Obi contesting and losing, a better option than boycotting the fraud called election for them, so as not to assist in legitimizing it for them? When will you Igbos ever make good use of your brain? face Biafra, that is your only hope. Umu ewu ndi one nigeria by force.
Just laughing!
So Kwankwaso was hoping to become president by using Obi's popularity?
Go and kill yourself!
It is better Obi lose the election than deputise Kwankwaso.
Kwankwaso should go ahead and win the election since his being Fulani is an automatic ticket to aso rock.

Let everyone vote their conscience and probably vote regionally. The north thinks it would be business as usual...using underage voters to win elections. Kwankwanso need Peter Obi more than Peter Obi needs him, beside Peter Obi is not desperate to become President of Nigeria. The youths supporting Peter Obi are out there to make a bold statement and whether he wins or lose, we would have sent our message to those crooks in Politics, that once the youth are 60% United, we would take back our country and chase them outta Aso Rock. As it stands today, we are just 30% ready because some youths in south west have joined their northern counterparts in (east and west) to drag us backward.
