In a same country, professors earn should earn more than senators, to be a professor na beans?

You lack an understanding of economics.

It is harder to be a Senator than a Professor.

That's why there are 109 senators and more than 7000 professors. Consequently, senators must earn more than professors. Also, professorship is a permanent position till 70 years while senators have a defined tenure.

It's the same way people say why are doctors not earning more than footballers, forgetting that there are far more doctors (who have a longer career) than professional footballers and statistically, it is easier to be a doctor working in the UK than a Premiership footballer.

Going by your analysis and logic, if a Professor in Nigeria spends N700k per annum on rent, and he will have 1.3m left for the whole year, have you considered the cost of fuelling his car and generator on daily basis, cost of school fees of two children in the university (and probably another two in a private secondary school), cost of cooking gas and cost of electricity (which are provided by govt in the US at a subsidized rate), cost of foodstuff which is racing at alarming speed every week and other factors like other dependants (e.g. Aged relatives or parents etc) which is usually not the practice in the US, if you convert all these costs to dollar and compare, you will see that Nigeria is a hostile place to survive.

The pay is per month.

It’s N2 million naira monthly which is N24 million naira a year, so if he pays 700k rent, he has N23.3 million naira left

As at 2019, Nigeria had about 11,877 professors (though this include both those on private and public higher institutions).

That means; monthly, the government will pay 2,000,000 x 11,877 = 23,754,000,000. That's over twenty three billion naira monthly.

As at today, Nigeria produces about 1.2m BPD of crude oil (Our main source of income, excluding mineral resources from the north which I don't know why they don't mention it. Only God knows where that money is going to). Using the official exchange rate of about 414 naira/dollar,
If 1 barrel is about 93 dollars, this becomes 1,200,000 x 93$ = 111,600,000 per day

that's a total income of 111,600,000 x 414 = 46,202,400,000 (Nigeria's income from crude oil).

THEN; 46,202,400,000 x 30 days = 1,386,072,000,000. This is over 1.3 Trillion naira monthly.

Boy o boy, This country is making money.

You are very wrong. Oil companies take at least 40% of the revenue as their part. With what is left the FG takes 52%.Do the calculation, don't forget the government has debts to pay and other government workers to pay.

You actually "down-played" it. The average annual rent of 2 bedroom in the US can't be N7M (less than $16,500) if your calculation considers places like New York where monthly rent for 2 bed is between 5k to 6k. Even in the cheaper areas, $16,500 annual rent would imply a monthly rent of about $1,375. That's not realistic for a 2 bed. I know you gave an estimate but I think it's much higher than that.

Yes you get the point

So there is no cost to the production of crude? And the oil companies that are producing it are good samaritans that produce every barrel and hand it over to Nigeria? Don't comment on what you don't know for likes. Nigeria cannot afford to triple the salary of ASUU members which is what is being recommended.
If you know how much Abacha looted within 1993 to 1998, you will know that Nigeria can afford triple of that amount. Only Hope Uzodinma was seen wearing a wrist watch of $800,000 shown here on Nairaland just yesterday. Wife of Femi Gbajabiamila was said to have worn an outfit that cost over a $50k. Not quite long ago, Gov. Matawalle was said to have distributed exotic SUVs (including Cardilac SUVs) to all traditional rulers in his state.
If those are far fetched, at least you are aware that each APC presidential aspirant (including a Pastor) bought the form for N100m except a woman whose form cost N50m and most of them did not contest before stepping down. PDP's form cost N40m and we all took it for granted because it's not up to N100m that APC sold it's for.
Forget, there is bastard money in Nigeria. Just that it is only circulated within the political class.

Good question. That’s what we should be protesting about, not paying our college professors N2 million monthly

N2 m for a prof is certainly too much. Any salary for lecturers should be relative to what other workers in various sectors are earning. It is now clear to all that this strike is all about salaries. Can the government afford it? What about doctors? What about teachers who are paid less than N80k. Further more, approving such will put a strain on the inflationary rate.
Let the government do a wholistic salary review that captures all sectors, otherwise it should be prepared for avalanche of strikes.

It's more than too much.

Most of those professors are old and completely useless to the system.

It's not like they are actively involved in any significant research/es that can benefit the society on a greater scale.

In fact, their professorship is just for mere symbol of status.

The demand is stupid. Even if the government can afford it, do you expect other categories of workers to keep quiet and continue with the N30k minimum wage?

If it is affordable, is it sustainable? Is it reasonable with the present economic situation where over 80% of revenue is devoted to debt servicing.

The average salary of a college professor in America is about N4 million naira monthly plus or minus (using N500 to $1)

The average cost of a 2 bedroom apartment in America is about N7 million annually, while the average cost in Nigeria (Lagos mainland) is about N700,000 annually

So based on this very simple comparison, why does a college professor in Nigeria want to earn half the salary of an American college professor when his expenses and standard of living are over 10x less?

Your figures are outdated!

Full college professors in the U.S. made an average of $143,823 in 2021-22. That's a rounded up value of about N6 million naira monthly! And that's at N500 per dollar.

Naira is currently about N610 per dollar so those professors in the US earn an average of over N7 million per month.

First of all not all of Nigeria's daily crude production belongs to Nigeria. Nigeria operates JV and PSC structure and in most cases the Government take ranges from 45% to 65% of the crude.

Secondly even if we assume government takes 50%,not all of that belongs to FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!! It will still be shared at FAAC to all tiers of government.

Guy which electricity and gas is subsidised in US? Who is feeding you trash? I'm in houston as I'm typing this and petrol is $4.50 per gallon (that's N497 per litre using official rate of N420/$). My last electricity bill was over $200 for June cos its bloody hot at the moment. Hotter than normal. So Hvac is overworking.
My car insurance is $115per month and property tax is about $4500 annually and mortgage is $1850 monthly? Are bills in Nigeria this high?

Professors in Nigeria should earn more no doubt, but please do not compare blindly to America.

I love it analysis. It's like u are in the academia to know this much
in Ghana earns close to a million a month. N2M won't be bad for a Prof in a country that prides itself as "Giant of Africa". Besides, a Prof. in an average Western University earns around N5m monthly without the stress Nigerian Lecturers have to go through. So, compare that with a Profs sub 500k total take home pay and see how low we are.

That said, this report is either a product of Mushroom, or malicious journalism. Ngige, in his vituperations claimed the lecturers jacked up their salaries by about 180%. No Prof currently earns up to N500k as total take home from CONUASS. How much is 180% of 500k? The actual amount will be slightly below 900k per month. How the olodo journalist got to 2M which is like 4.5times the current pay is quite funny.

While this argument is going on, Buhari is releasing 400bn for useless tradermoni. The reason Ngige has been playing with this whole thing is cos he knows Buhari will do nothing to him or anyone from the FG team for that matter.
