I have been laid off once and fired once. And I also survived 2 mass layoffs.

None of those experiences felt good. When I was let go the first time, I panicked because I had no savings.

I spent 3 months unemployed.

The second time, I had savings and spent 5 months unemployed. But I survived both times and actually moved into better roles.

Today, I’m grateful that I had those experience even though I was devastated in those moments.

They pushed me to the next level in my career each time. To everyone being affected by layoffs, please take the time to breathe.

Evaluate what you really want out of your next opportunity.

And keep your head up.

Something better is coming!

Great message, Often times, people use these moments as the final nudge they needed to get them to take the leap of faith to make a career pivot. We saw it in 2020 with the hospitality sector and a bunch of others.

Career pivot or not, there are many, many stories of people who were laid off and eventually found their way to something much, much better.

I accepted contract jobs before and it feels like lay off when the contract expires. Chances of contract jobs to be converted to permanent jobs are rare, I tried before but most companies have no capacity to do such change. Sighh..

Unfortunately fortunate have been laid off 6 times in the last 10 years (not fired, downsized or "consilidated". Yes 6 times and some of these young whipper snapper recruiters or hiring managers are clueless of the hard times in mid to late 90's and of course from 2000 to 2010. I've gained a massive amount of knowledge from working with great companies and I'd put my experience up against anyone. Those being laid off, remember what you've learned from where you've been and articulate how you can be of benefit to whoever is looking at you. If they question or even hesitate your work history, move on as there are those experienced hiring managers out there that salivate knowing experience matters....

I find it so powerful when people share their past experiences and seeming failures. It uplifts and helps people in similar positions know no failure is final, if you don’t accept it as final. Felt good to read this. I got made redundant from a job I loved, absolutely broke me and my saving. I felt let down and lied to by the management, but on the positive I’m now in full time employment and starting to progress.

I got let go 4 months ago as my leadership position was eliminated. First time it ever happened to me but I'm actually thankful it did. I was stuck in a super toxic culture and I was afraid to move on because of the situation the last two years.

Taking the last few months to reflect has taught me that I was suffering from anxiety and depression. Who knows how long it would have gone on if I was still working there. I've learned more through this experience than any other in my life and I'm looking forward to what comes next. Thank you for posting this today. I needed it!

Was working in a bank, had two supervisors who were very good to me, one even pushed me to start working on admissions outside the country, the other just took me like her son, after three years working there, I wanted out but I was scared of unemployment tho I had little saving, I didn’t know how long it would take me to get another job besides I didn’t want to work in a bank again

Then they brought a new supervisor, this woman was fucckin toxic and lack the ability to manage staff, she even at some points told me she will make sure Dey sack me, accused me of some other things, I wasn’t the only that was being treated like that.

Nobody told me before I resigned, just woke up one day and sent mail to all staff that I no work again, after I left three other staff left within a space of one month

I stayed for two months without job, but I have gone back to further education and improve my self

It hasn’t been very very easy but I am grateful I left

Mehn unemployment is rife in Nigeria. Well I was once there and its definitely not a good place to be. The only way to beat unemployment is to move to tech. Believe me you are made for life. Peace

I'm trynna muster this kind of energy and squeeze something out of this experience before it passes.

I've been unengaged for a month tops and believe me, it's been hell.

Long walks on flooded roads in search of just anything to keep me busy.
Rain beat me Yama Yama.
Protracted hunger.
Fell sick.
Got better.
Fell sick again.
Etc.

I peeked at a mirror the other day and couldn't recognize the man gawking at me.
I dey look am, e dey look me grin

It's my first time in this street...and I've never seen a thing like it.

Please guys, I need help
I got a job in V.I and I am in dire need of accommodation because my folks place is far away from V.I, so it can't be easy for me leaving home to VI everyday.

I would appreciate if anyone can help out with accommodation around Yaba, Akoka or Gbagada.
Any where close to VI.

P.S. I have about about 350k as a per annum budget.
I would also appreciate if I can get a place to manage pending the time I get my own accommodation.
I will be staying only during weekdays.

Thanks in anticipation.
