The hike in the price of diesel is taking its toll on former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his agric business.

This is as Obasanjo lamented the high cost of diesel, feeds and exchange rate crisis as they affect fish production in Nigeria.

Obasanjo said he has been sweating because of the high cost of diesel, saying this has been affecting his fish production.

Speaking at the Southwest fish farmers’ congress held Tuesday at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), the Balogun Owu complained that the hike in the cost of diesel, as well as the constant increase in prices of fish feeds, would kick fish farmers out of business.

To avoid this, Obasanjo said the only way is for them to come together to agree on sustainable prices that could be adopted to keep them in business.

According to him, farmers cannot be producing at the mercy of the buyers who would come around to buy the fish for whatever amount that suited them without considering the effect of the harsh economy on the production of fish.

He maintained that with the current price of diesel at N800 per litre, the production of a kilogram of fish is N1,400; he said the farmers cannot sell such fish for less than N1,500 as anything short of that amounts to “outright loss.”

“The price of diesel has gone high because the management of this country is not what it should be. And it is as simple as that. Then, what will happen is that particularly those of us who have to use a bit of diesel in producing fish, we will completely go bankrupt, and when that happens, Nigerians will still have to eat fish.

“Fish production will be out of reach and then, people will be producing fish outside Nigeria and be dumping it here. And you will go jobless, poor and indigent. So, what do we have to do? To come together. We want to sustain fish production and we must be able to take care of those who are going to eat and those of us who are producing.”

Facing the farmers, he asked, “How many of you are using diesel in your production? I use diesel and I’m already sweating. I’m already sweating.”

The President of South-West Fish Farmers Price Sustainability Group, Amo Tunbosun Amo disclosed that the country currently consumes around 3.6 million metric tonnes of fish annually but only produces 1.12 million tonnes leaving a balance of 2.6 million tonnes to be imported.

Amo explained that one of the major challenges confronting the fish farmers is the continued increase in the prices of inputs in the production of fish and majorly the feed and the refusal of the buyers to buy the fish at a commensurate price.[/i]

Sweating indeed.
It's not like he pays for diesel. He just gets them direct from his cronies or something. He's just empathetic about us, civilians that are bearing the most.

It's not like he's not part of our problems too.
If he handled NEPA well that time, we won't be in this clusterfuck situation where we are now.

Founding father of a democratic nation. He had the chance to make the foundation right but no, he turned out to be the typical nigerian politician.

Obasanjo nor well. This man been corruptly put he farm workers under federal government payroll. Workers dey work for am, while federal government dey pay them, then he go collect revenue put for pocket. Corruption at its finest.

He is the present darling of Ndi-igbo because he is supporting Obi while they castigate Tinubu for being corrupt. The Igbo wonder in Nigeria.

Anyways, OBJ and Tinubu are birds of same beak. No matter how OBJ pretends, he can't change the fact that he is corrupt. He is a master of corruption and never appealing to me politically, even if he speaks well of my candidate.

Peter Obi is my candidate and I understand the fact that, when you are in Rome, act like the Romans but PO should never take advice from OBJ because OBJ is a very greedy and selfish old man.

E go reach everyone. I know how much diesel we buy daily. We've resolved that we'd buy a big petrol generator that would power key gadgets in the office, henceforth. This is much more economical and cost-saving. The gen can also power our low voltage ACs. Our government has failed. It's sad to note they still claim they're paying subsidy despite the hike in the pump price of petrol and diesel. They're claiming that NNPC hasn't increased pump price yet, that the marketers only did so on their own.

In addition, we've installed solar panels in addition to the few we had in place.

Buhari's needless trips are a move to gather as much estacode as he can, for his retirement. Not that they'd not see money to take cafe of themselves but nothing is free anymore unlike when they're in office. Look at GEJ's look today and compare it with when he was in office. The difference is clear. They keep spending from what they've stolen yet, their taste remains the same and nobody remembers them again.

I'm wondering what the apc would use as their campaign points and manifestos next year. May we not smell failure ever again.

if you and your cronies had invested the money wisely when you are the president, will you be lamenting about the high cost of diesel today? Electricity alone would have corrected many wrongs in Nigeria
