As a university Graduate, I can't speak Good english. I'm depressed. by Nobody: 2:41pm On Aug 23, 2022
I graduated 3years ago, all my years in school I think it's a waste. what's the use when I can't express myself vocally with simple and correct english in public place without making several grammatical blunders which I know of and it gets me sad most of the times. but when it comes to writing, I think I try small in that aspect. securing a job haven't been easy for me..I attended some interview in the past with my CV after the written part..when it comes to oral aspect when asked questions.. some of the interviewers get shocked with the way I respond with several grammatical blunders..(some smile most time, while some just keep quiet and let me keep going on).. I know my oral English is very bad and I can't maintain a simple conversation for a period of time..due to the fact that I attended public schools during my primary and secondary school days with missed classes and not very good grades.
I seriously need Help, this has got me fustrated because I know alot of opportunities that has passed me by because of this.
some people don't even believe I'm a graduate because of this error in my life.

smiley You write better than most of the nairalanders here Brother.

Here's what you can do...try reading aloud while you write.....read stuff aloud and soon you'll be more conscious of tenses and structure of your spoken statements.

Start with learning to express simple terms in the simplest of ways....forget about big big grammar which can easily mess up your contextual use of the words.

Oratory is a skill that CAN BE LEARNT......attending a public school gives you a little disadvantage, but your adult life in the university would have given you a chance to communicate.....read books on public speaking, it may be able to help you pace your speaking to get control over it.

ABOVE ALL..."Don't speak to impress, speak to express." - says Me! grin

Thanks very much.
writing is very easy for me, even though I still make mistake.
but to speak out loud or converse with english is my greatest problem.
because of this I always get axious when I want to respond in english.
making me misuse some minor words

No one can do the work for you.

Rather than sit around and bemoan your situation, go online, find resources, books, videos anything. If the problem is truly affecting you then you yourself need to take action.

SUCH IS LIFE!!!

I didn't go to university after my secondary sch, I can't speak or construct a simple English then, but guess what. I developed myself by watching foreign movies, reading and also listen to good music lyrically.

But today what amazed me is the fact that ppl always asked of where do I school.

Op you can do it.
It's good you recognize this, which mean it's easy to get through it. I experienced this in the past but I got over it. I attended public school too.
Solution:
1. Try as much you can to socialize with people in English. Avoid staying in door all the time. I know why I am saying this. You can asked me why.

2. Change your ENVIRONMENT if you can. Our environment plays a major part in the way we speak or ability to communicate very well.
Change your locality or travel to other state.

3. You can engage yourself in teaching in primary or secondary school or organize a free teaching class for younger ones with that you can see how fast you will improve.
The reason in your poor speaking is freight when you thought the people you are meeting are above you in speaking good English.

Your brain and speaking stabilized when you start engaging in discussion and teaching to people with that your brain will be rewired on speaking good English without fear.

4. Always pray to God with good in English who is the author of languages. You will experience miracles.

From the look of things, I think you get tensed when you're about to express yourself.

Here's what I do to enhance the way I Express myself orally. Perhaps, it could be of help. You can try a different approach though:

1. Study: I study at least one word in the dictionary daily.

2. I listen to radio OAPs. I pay attention to their diction and the way they stress words.

3. This is very underrated. Many people watch movies for the fun of it. But, I watch movies (majorly American) to listen to the way they use their accent and play with words. And lastly

4. Record your voice and listen

Note: As far as you keep it simple, basic and accurate, you're communicating effectively. And, pay attention to the way you stress words...

In summary:
Imitate,
Read,
Reflect,
Prepare,
Speak, and
Practise.

I...
Once upon a time, I was in close contact with a friend who was struck with this dilemma.
You are entangled in a simple loop:

You can't dazzle orally because you are not sleek with your grammar. Conversely, the reason you aren't good with spoken English is because you don't speak it.

We knew this then. Yoruba was our default lingo, but because of that friend, we all started conversing in English. Also, we made it a thing to make fun of each other when we make blunders.

Some of his common blunders
(He wanted to say "compliment sir" to someone on New Year day)

My friend : Cemetary sir. Cemetary of the season.

(We were reading for an exam)

My friend: Let me sleep small, so my head can saturate.

Find friends you will dialogue with in English, laugh hard at your own blunders, your problem will vanish in no time like WhatsApp status.

Your only mistake was not speaking English while in the university.

I know a lot of guys like you, they'd rather mingle with Yoruba speaking people than try to at least communicate in English.

You need to start speaking English consciously. It's not too late.

That is very correct, when you don't mix up with
people of different tribes in your university days you limit your chance of learning and speaking good English language.

OP if you are Christian you can join the interpreters group and from there start building your confidence in speaking English language.

You can go and tenses, singular/plural noun and verb, simple present tense, past tense, past perfect tense, simple continuous tense etc.

Try to encourage yourself and you will begin to see improvements.
