Nigeria has none when it comes to an Expeditionary doctrine.
They go to great lengths to punch below the belt.
Even the second LST it was only after the first one was almost completed that it dawned on them the importance and implications of having a Sister Ship.
Where did you get this idea from.

NN had LSTs NNS Ambe and Offiom and has always had the plan to have the capability again resided in two platforms

Our expeditionary focus is around West Africa and the big idea is always to be able to resupply troops and carry armor around

To have a fair argument though. The last time we deployed in wartime, NAF didn't have a strong helo force

What is air support? The ability to use Commercially available drones in combat zone is air support, besides we had no problems deploying fighter jets, helicopters and transport aircrafts to Gambia, but we could not deploy armour on time.
I'm specifically talking about medium lift and AHs which are essential for supporting troops....how do you expect to scramble helis from 3000kms away?.... You can't, go ask the SANDF generals back in 2013....yes jets you can but you can't medi vac, or provide close air support with jets to the same degree as an AH

LHDs are perfect for regional powers like SA and Nigeria and the roles they are trying to play wrt peacekeeping and other military missions on the continent.

Fixed.

LHDs are on overkill for regional deployment in my opinion. LPDs on the other hand is perfect

Helicopters and Jets were based in Senegal during the Gambia deployment.

Helicopters and Jets were based in Niger during the Mali deployment.

Helicopters like we've seen in Ukraine and Yemen are easily shot down, infact if the helicopter doesn't redeem it's image soon, it would go extinct from the attack role in 3 decades time.

Jets and UCAVs are proving to be better than the Attack Helicopter for CAS.

Point of correction, Nigeria is an African Superpower.

......and NO!! LHD would provide no advantage to Nigeria that the LST is not currently providing.

- exactly my point

- exactly my point.... Helicopters must already be based close to the theatre and many times within foreign countries... They can not be scrambled 1000s of kilometers away.

- Helicopters are essential military tools that will not go extinct any time soon.... Both Ukraine and Russia have terrible military doctrine in general that have been exposed several times including by South Africa in the border war.

- UAVs have shorter ranges, less payload, less loiter time, weaker sensors, slower ext ext they play a pivotal role on the battle field yes but they are 100% not a replacement for AH.... In fact it comes down to doctrine again, South Africa have never used AH in the CAS role, theyve always been used as a strike platform, anti tank, escort and recce platform......using an AH for CAS means you are putting it at risk of being shot down... Fixed wing aircraft will always be better for cas than AHs.

- we are talking about real geopolitical terms not made up one's like "African superpower"

- Its an LST that can carry helicopters... Its obviously an advantage

The D- Dock in LPD should tell you something about them having well decks man

LHD prime focus is moving & support for air assets, and that's not something any LPD can do conveniently and consistently

One is called an amphibious assault ship and the other an amphibious transport ship for a reason.

Personally I wanted the Makassar LPD but the LSTs will have to suffice.

Their job is just to deliver cargo and whatever air assets that is embarked on it can at best serve in logistics role.

History has shown that NAFs activities in expeditionary role is logistics, ISR and Air Interdiction. That's why he mentioned Jets & UAVs

THINK TANK & ACADEMIA

Insightful, educative diagnosis and prognosis of Nigeria's national security, foreign policy and reform of the UNSC by the legendary Nigerian diplomat and former foreign minister Professor Balaji Akinyemi. From about 38mins Italian intelligence uncovers direct French interests & subversive elements in West Africa. On the whole a great study for military, intelligence, security & foreign policy won.ks. & Jun.kie.s.

The professor basically cleaned the stables, even shading some ex-leaders for treason.
Nigeria really should do away with the current policy since especially 1999 of punching below its weight [strategic ambiguity]. Hasn't worked.

The next Nigerian president should take notes.

We hear the Southies are struggling again this time in the DRC and the Kenyans are coming in to help. In Cabo Delgado things ain't looking nice either with the "small time" savage terrorists wrecking havoc in the southern part. Imagine if bokos show up or ISWAP terrorists.

Who will save the Congo! Even the Kenyans I thought would bring some sense of sanity there are now withdrawing. Did President Ruto develop cold feet so quick after taking over.

The Nigerians are the only ones now with the the kind of capability to deal with the problem but won't touch it with a long spoon since its adventure their in the 60's and for very many reasons not least because Rwanda is our client state. Everyone knows Kigali is playing the long game of keeping it's big but weak neighbor next door perpetually tied down so as not to become an existential threat to the Kagame and Tutsi dynasty and also geopolitically irrelevant to the benefit of a relevant Rwanda. Abuja could actually turn the situation around without so much the force of arms but diplomacy.

He listed the new aircraft platforms being expected to include: two Agusta 109 Trekker multi-role helicopters, two Beechcraft King Air 360, four Diamond DA-62 surveillance aircraft, three Wing Loong II UCAVs and six T-129 ATAK helicopters.

Others include: two CASA-295 medium airlift/surveillance aircraft, 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters, and 24 M-346 attack aircraft.

According to the Chief of Air Staff, “Under Mr President’s able leadership, the Federal Government has, since 2015, acquired 38 new aircraft to boost training and combat readiness of the NAF.

The Nigerian Air Force has expressed interest in acquiring new aircraft from Airbus and has held discussions with the Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria on this and other matters.

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, said the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is looking to partner with the Spanish Government in the areas of aircraft acquisition, training, air operations, intelligence sharing and capacity development in imagery analysis, and is in discussions with Airbus.

The commitment of the government to fix security in Nigeria is incredible.

Imagine if we saw these investments during the time of former President GEJ.

Where would we have been today.

Just incredible!!!

We need to keep churning out the pilots.

Looking at Nigerian Air Force force structure, it is obvious we need to add additional transport aircrafts.

Since the G-222 became inoperable, it became clear that our ageing C-130s could not cope.

CASA C-295 is an excellent medium transport aircraft. I was hoping we would have gone for a minimum of 3 units, but 2 x units is a good start off point.
