It can sir but the harmattan period affects the production of pod. During this period production is very little as the pod drys off before it becomes Okro.
Why do they dry off during harmattan though? Low water or heat? which one? What happens if one keeps the plants watered throughout the season? undecided

Okro is a temperate plant it can survive drought but at low temperature which occurs during harmattan the growth is stunted and production of pod is drastically reduced.

So, what is the ideal temperature for this crop then? And what about green housing this plant during those low-temperature seasons? undecided

This is a lady finger. It looks very good because:
1. There is no competition with other plant and lady finger are very vigorous in growth
2. The soil must be very good to support this kind of growth but mind you if your Okro is just full of leaves I don’t think it will produce Okro very much and that’s why you need to know when to apply fertilizer and when not too!
.
From my experience, if there is too much leaves and no fruits, cutting off some leaves will stimulate fruit production. Those that I did not pruned did not produce fruits.

The reason why you can’t use Paraguay is because it burns the stem of the plant and disrupt the flow of nutrient from the root also when the plant starts producing pod due to the burn on the stem is breaks off at the spot of contact with paraquat. Am talking from my personal experience sir
.
Seems like you spray very close to the stem. I try to avoid that. One can also use spray guard.

Green house is possible if you can regulate the temperature during this period and also consider your market before making the green house decision. We sell to the open market here sha

This is very possible sir if it is on a small scale but we cultivate hectares of land here so best thing to do is not too over fertilize you’re plant

The type of herbicide to use depends on the kind of weeds present on your farmland we have some weeds here that glyphosate will not kill e.g water leaf that only 2-4D can.

I think the market would welcome okra even during the harmattan seasons, don't you? undecided

That's big oo. Okra is not my main crop. Like how many bags do you get per hectare?
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 7:59pm On Dec 22, 2022
Okro is a main crop over here in Iwo, Osun state. People come all over the country especially from the eastern part to buy from us here. We have a stable market for our product.

Yield by hectacre varies and can only be determined by your agronomy practice. I get like 35basket on an acre when the Okro is at its peak. We harvest for close to two and half month which makes it like 20 harvests.

First harvest can be just 4 baskets and the number keeps growing till it reaches its peak at the 8th to 9th harvest but everything still depends on your input and management.
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 8:06pm On Dec 22, 2022
Some farmers harvest only 6 times and the crop will stop producing.

Pls can you post the pic of the basket? Can you compare the size to chicken feed bag?

You should be able to get it by end of January. Harvesting of pod is still ongoing.
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 7:59pm On Dec 23, 2022
Okro is one of the easiest crop to grow that gives you money like you are on a retirement plan. I plant hectares of Maize too but I must confess the ROI cannot be compared, like it’s not even close
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 8:00pm On Dec 23, 2022
Imagine planting sweet corn and when you harvest its glut period and you can only harvest once compare to a crop you will harvest for at least 16times if you manage the farm properly.
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 8:01pm On Dec 23, 2022
There is no way you won’t make your investment back on a crop like Okro.

what type of irrigation you use and what's the ideal spacing between the plants.

I do furrow irrigation on my farm as the topography does not support drip.
Spacing should be 30by 30cm from one plant to another and two rows are planted within the furrow

By the grace of God I will be starting an Okro project by February and will carry everyone along so as to give you more insight. Merry Christmas in advance

How deep does the root of the Okra variety you plant grow and how wide does it spreading the ground? Any idea? undecided
Re: Diary Of An Okro Farmer by Jub101(m): 8:13pm On Dec 24, 2022
For a plant like Okro that is drought resistant it has a deep tap root system with other aerial roots .
