Lekan239:Mr Lekan, I clearly agreed with you that YES, there are Nigerians who earn equivalent of £20,000/month. Forget posting pay slips on Youtube, I've seen monthly paychecks of $40,000 for oil & gas engineers in Nigeria. So there's no argument about the EXISTENCE of such super earners. Please pay attention so we can have a useful discussion. My question to you is, can you give us an educated guess as to HOW MANY PEOPLE earn that in Nigeria? What percentage of the population? I know for a fact, by my exposure and by research, that only 0.5% of Nigerians earn over ₦200K per month. So how many people do you think earn £20,000/month in Nigeria? An educated estimate will do. Go ahead and tell us. Also, what percentage of Nigerian families or adults live in homes with 24 hour electricity and flush toilets...which implies running piped water? I'm fairly certain that over 95% of the population in the UK have access to such basic amenities, even if they earn ONLY £18,000/year. Thanks. |

Treadway:I'm a pharmacist. When I was planning my move back to Nigeria in 2008 or so, I actually had a good chance to get employed at a major pharma in Nigeria but I hated Lagos. I also thoroughly investigated the pharma business for investment opportunity. I can authoritatively tell you that pharmacists, even at the major drug companies, don't earn much. Basically, extrapolating from what I found out back then, 99% of pharmacists in Nigeria today earn less than ₦500K per month. A pharmacist friend of mine also moved back to Nigeria from the USA and started a pharmacy business. He imported from abroad, got all the NAFDAC approvals and secured contracts selling to all sorts of hospitals, public and private. The business thrived for a few years then failed. You can talk all you want about other things, but that your pharmacy story is FALSE and I say that because I know. In fact there's a pharmacist that moved from Nigeria recently....actually about 5 years ago....at the time I met him he was working at a grocery store. I talked to him at the time and he had nothing good to say about Nigeria. I'm sure he's doing very well now, in fact I should call him. Have a good day. |

IbeOkehie:like I said, do not compare the earnings over there with Nigeria earnings without comparing the cost of living of both countries. Someone earning 2.4m(200k monthly) annually in Nigeria is not poor here in Nigeria, but someone earning £40,000(£3,333 monthly) is considered poor down there. |

Lekan239:People earning £40k in the UK are not considered poor, are you conflating it with just London? Even in London, assuming you don't have kids and family to provide for and depending on where you live, your commute and a whole bunch of other factors, it will be tight but it's definitely not 'poor' status |
| Re: Why Are Nigerians Japing To The UK When UK Workers are On Strike For Poor Salary by erico2k2(m): 4:02pm On Dec 29, 2022 |
Lekan239:Stop assuming, this is the problem with you lot, you fling figures outta thine air with no back up, why don't you back up the Nigerian claim and lets us back up the Uk claims with figures, Inflation is up in the Uk, but in Nigeria the inflation is mad.N200k monthly money is nothing compared to the standard of living in Nigeria. If you have a freezer, Ac in your house you Energy bills will surely get to N35k in a month, when you add you car fuel to it your energy bill has already gone up to nearly N60k.You might spend N10k for Data if you are not a heavy User and N8k forTV. Now food how much you recon? N80k?we have not added rent yet and other health enablement. Cant you already see that due to inflation N200k earner is a poor man? Imagine if that month you now need to fix ur car or something |

ibkayee:£40k means nearly £3k take home, I remeber when I was on that wage, I wasn't poor, I was doing so well, I had my House in N8, if you know Hornsey near crouch end. Dunno why guys on here keep comparing monies in the uk and Nigeria, there is nothing to compare . |
| Re: Why Are Nigerians Japing To The UK When UK Workers are On Strike For Poor Salary by ibkayee(f): 4:12pm On Dec 29, 2022 |
erico2k2:Don't think 40k is 3k take home, I think the take home is like 2.5k and possibly less depending on additional costs like pension schemes etc. It's not a poor salary, although with the 10% inflation rate it won't quite cover what it used to |
| Re: Why Are Nigerians Japing To The UK When UK Workers are On Strike For Poor Salary by IbeOkehie: 4:33pm On Dec 29, 2022 |
Lekan239:Over 99.95% of Nigerians are POOR. Take it or leave it and it's mostly because most of what they use for modern life is IMPORTED, including petrol! So the reality is you earn naira and spend on dollar priced goods. Again, most importantly, how many Nigerians earn that ₦200K per month? The best figure I know is 0.5% according to reputable surveys and by my own observation. What are the chances you're among them? A cousin of mine that teaches at a private elementary school in Owerri earns ₦17K, an Access Bank banker with 7 years experience that migrated to Houston in 2013 told me his salary was ₦150K. Your ₦200,000 is $250 dollars or £200 It's practically NOTHING for even the poorest person in the UK/USA and only 0.5% of Nigerian workers earn that much. That about says it all, don't you think? The median income in the USA is $65,000 per year, meaning HALF of all families earn that and Nigerian immigrants are acknowledged as one of the better earning national groups in this country. OK, someone earning £40,000 in the UK is poor, but Nigerians in that place still manage to send billions of dollars back to their relatives, they build houses, pay rent and health & education costs for their relatives. That person earning £40,000 likely lives in an apartment with all basic amenities available 24 hours except in case of weather or disaster. Only 7% of Lagosians have that available to them. Low wage earners in the USA own cars, how many people own private car in Nigeria? Even poor me that started out earning $3.50/hr in the USA, I managed within 7 years to build a house in Nigeria, buy car for my family and put myself through university with zero loan, I paid cash out of pocket. The important thing is that only 0.5% of Nigerians earn the biggie ₦200K....not to talk of £20,000 per month You have nice dreams though. Nigerians are POOR, they're suffering from debilitating poverty, that's why most people living in that country can't think straight. You're a perfect example. You and the other FAKE high earners in Nigeria are not worth discussing anything with. I believe what others have said on other threads - you're probably a frustrated university student or teen projecting their dreams. I'm done indulging you. This is my last post to you and your kind. |

ibkayee:Ok check this.35600 is £2300 there bouts take home basic. So £40k should be close and also depends on your tax code. Also people on £40k wage are termed middle class in the Uk cos most managers do not even earn that. |
| Re: Why Are Nigerians Japing To The UK When UK Workers are On Strike For Poor Salary by ibkayee(f): 4:43pm On Dec 29, 2022 |
erico2k2:If you're earning 40k you will always be taxed a rate of 20% (after the first £12,570) Outside of London it's a good salary It was manageable in London depending on certain expense factors, but nowadays not so much. Definitely not 'poor' however |

IbeOkehie:keep on using your UK data statistics of 0.5% yet almost all households in various capital in Nigeria use fuel to power their gen daily. A good number of them also has cars and huge figures in their bank account |

ibkayee:Nop you wrong there,20% is BR, if you have a tax code you are taxed according to your own tax code, not 20%, also 50k is the threshold, if you earn £55k you will be charged higher tax rate on £5k and £40k tax at your normal rate .You can find this information on your P60, its xplained on there, this is why you have two sections on your P60.In London Managers earn Less than £40k, you can check jobs on line |
| Re: Why Are Nigerians Japing To The UK When UK Workers are On Strike For Poor Salary by ibkayee(f): 6:48pm On Dec 29, 2022 |
erico2k2:Most people are on the 1257L tax code (if they have just one job, no benefits or tax-deductible allowances), meaning that the first 12,570 of your salary is tax free Earnings between £12,571 and £50,270 are taxed at 20%. Between £50,271 and £150,000 will be taxed at 40% So if someone is earning £40k, everything above the first £12,570 is taxed at 20% If you weren't on the 12571L tax code though fair enough |
