3 days now, I haven't entered my house.

3 days now since I returned from job search, I haven't entered my house because landlord came and locked the place with heavy padlocks after I failed to pay him the rent. Note: it's not my intemtion to owe him. I am not owing him deliberately.

I have respected him and still respecting him by not breaking that key but it's 3 days now since I have been pleading with him to consider me and my present condition, that I will pay, the man has refused to understand with me.

I have spent these last 3 days in strange places including sleeping outside because I can't enter the place.

Please nairalanders, should I break the keys and enter the house? What would happen if I do that?

How do I resolve this matter please, especially as I am not with money to pay him right away?

This is what I am currently going through as a person.

Go report the case at the police station then thereafter break the lock.
If he comes for you, beat him up.
He has no fucking right to lock your apartment.

He needs a court order to do that.

You are sounding as if you were the one that bought sand and cement for him to build that apartment.
That money for Lawyer and Police won't it go a long way to plead for 6 mnth rents?

Let him carry like 2k or 1500 go open file for police, then come back and break the key, 3days is not 3hours, and get ready for 3month quit notice, gather money before then and pack

The apartment was locked up from outside not broken into so how will money get missing


Why can't you advise him to look for small money to pay the landlord even if it's 6 months, he is supposed to beg him.

Infact following the Lagos law he is already a Tenant at will and entitled to only 7 days notice, so even if the landlord decides to go the legal route he is as good as out and will still pay what is owed.


The bolded is a typical Nigerian mentality always wanting to cheat landlords, always not wanting to pay debts or loans

If your properties are still inside then he has no right to lock it up. Break the key and go in. You can report to the Police if you want before doing this but you don't necessarily have to because it wasn't locked by any court.

He was supposed to issue you a quit notice then get a court order so that the court officials (still not him) can enter and relocate your belongings to a court storage until you bail them. This will take minimum 6 months but bear in mind that you will still pay for the 6 months.


The point is, he has no right to lock your properties up.

The 3 basic necessities in life is food, shelter and clothing. The problem is that we always approach things with sentiments. As long as you eat food and wear cloths, one should also plan for his rent.
Find small money and beg the landlord, he will be considerate except you don't always pay rent as at when due.
We should also learn to save for rent.
People should liken paying rent to how you will feel when you worked for a whole month and your salary is not paid. Most landlords depends solely on that rent to survive.

Every tenant is protected by law.


As a landlord, if you have issues with
a tenant, take him to the rent Tribunal
and get him ejected legally and not to
take they law into your hand.

Landlord is completely wrong, but going to the police and involving lawyer will also involve money.... Take that money and give your landlord instead

That's why I'm hustling and praying that God should crown my efforts so a can buy myself a plot of land.

Not taking any sides, but bottom line, let us all be considerate. Building & maintaining a house no be moi moi these days.

It's possible landlord took loan which he's struggling to repay.

I don't support the police route since that is just extra cost

I have been paying even though a bit late but this is the first time I'm owing up to 4 months.
