I love this topic.
I wish Nigerian universities will make it compulsory for every student to choose a foreign language to learn while in the university.

Yeah, it is a compulsory course in my school, University of Abuja.

We have Arabic, French and Japanese.

Brazil don't speak Spanish, but Portuguese
Portuguese is their main language true but close by they have Panama 7 hours away, as a stranger in their country, if they speak and you don't understand they would assume you speak Spanish and ask you, Espanol? so don't get it wrong a lot speak Spanish in Brazil, especially in the Airport. I have been to Brazil and I can tell you that.

How is Barbados, are you still there? How formidable is their nursing certificate globally?

quote author=favourRN post=122535883]

Yes, I learned Spanish in Barbados while in nursing school, and it helped in communicating especially when traveling through Brazil, and the Panama route but personally it helped my communication with fellow Spanish nurses. I don't know how it could benefit more in Nigeria but outside the country it is.[/quote]

their certificate is valuable globally for sure but to be Rn-nurse you need to write up the licensing exam in whichever other country you want to practice, i.e if you want to be a registered nurse within the Caribbean which includes Barbados you just need to do RENR exam, but for countries like Canada and USA - Nclex exam, why in the UK NMC exam as ordinary certificate cant make you a licensed nurse.

No. I went far. The more I learnt, the more I forgot what I learnt

To learn new language you can't just be practicing like you reading for exams..

You need to intract with people that speak the same language... that will only help you learn fast and never delete away from ur memory

That's not quite right. Nearly all European languages are members of the Indo-European language family tree, apart from a few isolates like Basque. In any case, for an English speaker, Scandinavian languages like Norwegian or Swedish would be even easier to learn than Spanish or any other Romance language.

Thank you for the very polite clarification. We learn everyday. Appreciate it

That's another angle. Italian and Portuguese came from Latin too but don't have that similarity.

That masculine and feminine sets them apart.

I'm almost certain that the m/f also exists in Portuguese especially as it is closely related to Spanish. Most Spanish speakers would understand Portuguese. I'd have to research if Italian has it or not. But I expecte it to have it.

yes, visa-free, you don't need a visa but communicate with your school in Barbados so they can give you the list of documents to be showing the immigration officer at every country to transit.

I would start a thread, but I think it's best to download Duolingo for free on your phone. It has a lot of languages you can chose from to learn.

You are doing good, but it's not "Yo so buena", it is "Estoy bien". "Yo soy buena" is what you reply if you're a female, and replying to a question about how good you are at something. If you are a male, you say "Yo soy bueno".

MrBroke:
Learn that Fuckin' Spanish . Holla, coma estas cheesy

And then you reply

Yo so buena grin

God2man2again:
Are they speaking Spanish language in neighbouring African countries? No!

Equatorial Guinea is the only African speaking Spanish country in Africa.

I think French will be the best option since you can easily travel to neighbouring countries ( Benin, Cameroon, Cote de voire and Togo) for vacation, business, education, religion activities and so on.

Learning a foreign language in university is a fantastic way to expand your horizons, improve your cognitive abilities, and enhance your career prospects. But which foreign language should you choose? There are so many options to consider, each with its own unique benefits.

One of the most popular and practical choices is Spanish. With over 500 million speakers worldwide, Spanish is the second-most spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese. It's also the second-most commonly spoken language in the United States, making it incredibly useful for anyone looking to work or travel within the country.

Spanish is also a gateway to the rich and vibrant cultures of Latin America and Spain. Learning the language will give you access to literature, music, art, and cinema that you might otherwise miss out on. You'll also be able to connect with Spanish-speaking communities and build relationships across language barriers.
good advice I speak Spanish Language

Many Brazilians do NOT speak Spanish, and MOST don't understand much if you speak to them in Spanish. Dude, check out my topics, I've lived in Brazil and I know what I'm talking about. I speak both Spanish and Portuguese, and you will have problems communicating in Brazil using Spanish, if you don't try to learn some Portuguese.

It's easier for them to understand each other when it's written, but when spoken is another thing entirely.

Example: My name is Kris.
Spanish: Mi nombre es Kris.
Portuguese: Meu nome é Kris.

Only those that take some time to learn a bit of the other language are able to take advantage of the similarities and then are able to understand.

I've lived in Uruguay and Brazil.

Dancebreaker:

But many Brazilians do speak it. Many will easily understand what you are saying to them in Spanish.

French as spoken in France/Belgium/Quebec/Switzerland is not as easy as people think. African version in Cotonou and Africa is easier to speak.

Spanish is internationally becoming very important. German provides opportunities for work in Germany.

Mandarin will probably be the most important foreign language of the future. I may be wrong though. I thought Russian would become very important when cold war ended but alas!

If learning a single foreign language, learn French. It is our second official language. You see it in 9ja international passport.

Been learning Chinese and its not so easy
I'm learning Chinese Mandarin at the moment. The language is easy but its the "hànzì" (characters) that is not so easy. Thousands to learn, so taking it little by little. I speak many languages including Spanish, French, German, etc, so that's why learning more is not difficult for me.
