Most Spanish speakers don't understand much of Portuguese. I speak both languages and I can tell you as a matter of fact.

Yes Portuguese and Italian have the masculine and feminine nouns/pronouns.

airsaylongcome:

I'm almost certain that the m/f also exists in Portuguese especially as it is closely related to Spanish. Most Spanish speakers would understand Portuguese. I'd have to research if Italian has it or not. But I expecte it to have it.

Many Brazilians do NOT speak Spanish, and MOST don't understand much if you speak to them in Spanish. Dude, check out my topics, I've lived in Brazil and I know what I'm talking about. I speak both Spanish and Portuguese, and you will have problems communicating in Brazil using Spanish, if you don't try to learn some Portuguese.

It's easier for them to understand each other when it's written, but when spoken is another thing entirely.

Example: My name is Kris.
Spanish: Mi nombre es Kris.
Portuguese: Meu nome é Kris.

Only those that take some time to learn a bit of the other language are able to take advantage of the similarities and then are able to understand.

I've lived in Uruguay and Brazil.

I visited Montevideo in Uruguay and loved it. I was surprised to find so many black people there in contrast to Argentina. Went from Buenos Aires via the very nice Buquebus ferry on a day trip. Enjoyed speaking Spanish there too.

That's right. However, Portuguese speaking people understand Spanish more. Both languages are similar in words and so reading is easier both ways. I speak little Brazilian Portuguese but understand and read a lot more.

I don't mean to be rude grin but don't say "i can type or read quite alright" and then you went on to type "Pero...yo gusta español...el palabras es muy bonito" grin

Correction:
Pero...me gusta el español...las palabras son muy bonitas.

I think you are doing good learning, but just remain humble and keep learning.

Watch my video below to help you practice your Spanish. grin

That's dope you went to Uruguay! Uruguay protected their blacks, while Argentina tried to take out everyone with dark skin, including the natives.

I'm sure you saw a statue of Artigas on a horse while you were there, he fought against the killing of indigenous people.
He is buried in the Plaza Independencia.

I took advantage that it was close to Argentina and I did not need a visa for both countries. Yes, I saw Artigas's statue and also Oribe. Took some photos. Followed the avenue down the plaza and lots of shops and restaurant. Had walked from the ferry terminal. Saw a large cruise line moored by the terminal.

You are right that they don't speak much Spanish in Brazil but they can understand better than the other way round. I spent some months in Rio de Janeiro working but at that time I did not speak Spanish. Portuguese people in Portugal especially those close to Spain would understand more Spanish.

Learning a foreign language in university is a fantastic way to expand your horizons, improve your cognitive abilities, and enhance your career prospects. But which foreign language should you choose? There are so many options to consider, each with its own unique benefits.

One of the most popular and practical choices is Spanish. With over 500 million speakers worldwide, Spanish is the second-most spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese. It's also the second-most commonly spoken language in the United States, making it incredibly useful for anyone looking to work or travel within the country.

Spanish is also a gateway to the rich and vibrant cultures of Latin America and Spain. Learning the language will give you access to literature, music, art, and cinema that you might otherwise miss out on. You'll also be able to connect with Spanish-speaking communities and build relationships across language barriers.

Learning Spanish is very advantageous but it's not the second most spoken language in the world.

My reply to OP and anybody that meets the following criteria: knowledge of Yoruba.

If you know Yoruba, then learning Spanish can help you get a translation job with Spanish people interested in the Yoruba religion.
You can also move to South America to open a school where you can teach Yoruba.

When I was in Uruguay last year, I met a couple that was into the Yoruba religion, and they told me it will be a big business teaching Yoruba there and they also want to learn.

Here is the video below.

You are wildly exaggerating the extent to which Portuguese speakers will have difficulty understanding Spanish, especially when the Spanish speakers slow down to maximize their chances of being understood. Your personal experiences are not a sufficient basis for generalizing about the situation for the whole of Brazil: to illustrate, I too have plenty of friends and acquaintances who are native speakers of either tongue, and in not a single case has there been significant difficulty for either camp to make themselves understood to each other with a little effort. This isn't really a matter of my anecdotes versus yours, as language researchers have studied this issue in some detail. See, for example, the following link.

On the Mutual Intelligibility of Spanish and Portuguese

This reality shouldn't be surprising, as Portuguese and Spanish (or to be precise, Castilian) are part of a dialect continuum that covers the entire Iberian peninsula, and extends into France all the way to Italy (which is why I have also witnessed Italians and Spaniards conversing with each other just fine in their native languages). What that means is that if you start from anywhere in Portugal, as you proceed from village to village until you hit the Spanish border you won't see any two neighboring settlements where people have the slightest difficulty understanding each other, and this continues to be the case even when you get to southern France (as long as you stick with the native Occitan dialects).

With the Romance languages, the only ones that are true outliers are "official" Parisian French (which was heavily influenced by Dutch and Old Saxon) and Romanian (which has been isolated for over 1,000 years). All the others fade into each other gradually as you travel through Europe. To put this into the Nigerian context, Yoruba and Itsekiri may seem wildly different to non-native speakers, but for natives of either it only takes a few weeks exposure to get comfortable (here Igala is to these other "Yoruboid" languages what Parisian French is to Portuguese, Spanish and Italian).
