‘Japa’, a lingo in Nigeria for deliberate exit from the country especially for greener pastures abroad, has been a constant happening over the last few years with students, professionals and partners forming the chunk of those fleeing its shores.

As enticing as the idea of being in a relatively ‘better’ country is, the experiences of people who have left have continued to prove that truly ‘there is no place like home.’
Taking a look at the diverse peculiarities of Nigeria, here are five things you will miss if you find yourself abroad.
Nigerian Foods

Food is peculiar to every country. And Nigeria, with its plethora of ethnic groups, has a slew of foods its citizens don’t joke with. From Amala, to Akpu, Ogbono, Bread and Beans down to Moi Moi, these are foods that are dear to every Nigerian, and no amount of civilization can unplug the relish for these foods.

The moment you are leaving the shores of the country, you are as well leaving behind these ‘unique’ delectables whose tastes are never the same even when taken outside of their place of origin ( Largely because they’re transported to other markets with lots of additives that change the organic tastes ).

2. Weather

If there is a thing in Nigeria that is highly underappreciated, it is the weather. Nigerians in the diaspora have always expressed their struggles with the frosty weather abroad, and how much they miss the cozy and friendly weather in the country.

3. Family and Friends

Moving to a new country most times entails leaving behind family members and friends who you might not see for as long as your stay abroad. Though technology helps us connect beyond boundaries, the feeling of being physically around your family members and friends is matchless.

4. Owambe

Nigeria is ‘big’ on parties – and that is on period. Flamboyant, lavish, expensive, food-filled, dramatic, these features of the Owambe parties are unequaled anywhere in the world. It is one of the many things that make Nigeria exclusive, and being in the country unparalleled.

5. Free Amenities

Abroad you pay for almost everything from as high as electricity bills to as low as water bills. Their social amenities are prioritized, and it works in a way that you cannot evade paying for the bills of the amenities you use. In Nigeria, water bills are scarce as almost everyone has their own system of getting water; indiscriminate parking of cars is common but can’t be dared abroad without you being ticketed.

All the things you stated here are the reasons I hate Nigeria.

I'm not really a foodie so anything you serve me I'll adapt and adapt well.

Don't get me started on the weather , I burn up easily and feel more right at home under the AC even without clothes and during rainy days.

I abhor getting to mix with people , if I can not shelve it I'll meet people but if the opportunity arises to evade people I'll gladly evade them , yes and this goes for family as well.

Owambes is the same reason as above

In Nigeria nothing is free , what you feel is free is being collected somehow somewhere else. Last month PHCN billed me 59k for electricity that didn't last for more than 8 hours each day , do you want to talk about transportation , some days , especially rainy days you pay as high as 1500 for a bus ride from Lekki to Oshodi. Wouldn't you rather pay exactly for what you have used

I'm telling you, there is more freedom in Nigeria than those places where we claimed security of lives abroad.

Its not freedom. It is lawlessness

Home is wherever you make it.

It may surprise you that your ancestors came as migrants to the place you call home today. After settling, they made it their home which is why you enjoy it now. I'm not saying that is your case but we have such cases around us.

All of us are migrants in one way or the other so wherever we find ourselves, we should endeavor to make it a home. If not, one will continue to have issues.

What I miss about Nigeria today are my family members and sometimes the food I grew up with though I'm now used coolto intercontinental dishes.

What most Nigerians abroad miss about Naija aside family members and food, are just impunity and lawlessness in the country, nothing else.

You must be a sorcerer cool for inking my exact thoughts.

Keep on consoling yourself. A lot of people could not have wished to leave Nigeria if not for the present developmental gaps

A lot of people abroad don't like the place and will run back if Nigeria becomes standard like Rwanda

There are toilets available. So no need piss anyhow.

There are NO toilets available.

If you want to pee you need to get to your house before you pee.

Or else look for a hidden corner and pee, just like in Nigeria.

I don't know who tells you people all this ''abroad is heaven on earth'' rubbish.

The only thing I agree with is 3.

Australian weather is the best weather. Its not too cold but can be too hot.
It doesn't snow in Australia.

Nigeria is too humid and all year hot.

Haven't been home in like 5years. Prefer to bring my parents over than coming back.

Every food I want get's shipped to me. Don't really miss anything in Nigeria.

Here is home for me.

To all people that insulted their home country & people inthe name of being in another man's land God will humble you, you know what it means when humbles you? I heard one fool saying 'our local bingo' & series of vulgar languages used against Nigerian & Nigeria. With time your eyes will clear, use your sense!!!

My friend keep quiet. Freedom in Nigeria thank america right? 😂 😂 😂. What of the jungle justice, power failure,. Lack of emergency response when things are going on.
The last time I came to Nigeria , I spent 3 months and left in February, I never enjoy light if not for my generator, I know how much I spent on petroleum. Scarcity of fuel not to talk of buying Naira with naira.
Pardy. U no well. Hisssss.

Food ..... it depends on your location abroad. If you're in the US ... location... if in Missouri then it's a major problem to get foods..... but if in NYC ... I can't say what you can't get pretty easily.

Weather..... it depends on location. Too many people believe the entire US gets cold in winter. There are places that have cold spells .... some bitter cold spells and also places where you'll face heat like you never did in Nigeria. Wonderful on TV Las Vegas is one such place.

There’s no where like home, but you wouldn’t know until you finally leave.

Its the same thing as a rich man telling you money is not everything and you don’t understand because you are actually poor and can’t afford basic necessities so your brain wouldn’t process it till you actually have money.

I only miss weather and, family and friends
