@IyaTola:

It would be helpful to differentiate between what occurs in Nigeria: prostitution aka exchange of sex for money

And what occurs in the West: causal sex aka one night stand which is actually the hookup culture.

For Nigeria: prostitution is caused majorly by greed, unresourcefulness, laziness etc. on the part of the men & women. A few women/young girls are victims of trafficking and kidnapping for prostitution.

For the West: hookup is majorly caused by feminism which taught women that they are free to sexually explore aka sleep around. Now, feminism claims that men have been promiscuous of ages and applauded. Instead of holding the men accountable, they strangely preferred to 'join' the men and rather insust that they are not slut shamed. Because of free sex, men wonder why they should buy the cow when they can get the milk for free.

In all of the above, there are young men and women in Nigeria & the West who have decided (due to religion, morals, upbringing or personal determination) to apply sexual restraint and shun instant gratification. To them I say kudos and may God/life lead you to similar partners who have reserved themselves.

The s3xmaniac already confused and indicted himself with his own comment below. How do women monetise their bodies if men don’t have a GREATER need for them?

as if women don't have urge for sex whereas they crave for it more. Sex is the greatest weapon a woman has over a Man this is why they monetize it.

That's just an excuse. Is she the first girl to be out of job? She did it cos she probably was already doing it before she got that job, and was probably doing it on the side when she had the job...i know female bankers that are into hookup. It is not always about poverty...it is most times because the girl is lazy.
Well, you are right. It is just difficult to make excuses for them.

You're very accurate. I'm amazed when i see some girls in their 20s i know are into runs calling themselves olosho on whatsapp statuses and laughing about it...they're not ashamed about it anymore. Theyre very open.

They love it...they love every bit of it, from hanging with Yahoo boys and older men that spend lazishly on them, to have wild sex with these men.

Females love sex more than men, and realising they can get sex and be paid for it is thrilling . Its a win win for them. if you are doing hook up, please continue, just make sure you carry out routine stds tests, avoid anal sex and stay off drugs so you don't get an addiction and go astray. Importantly eat healthy, get proper hygiene and save because your bodies would not always be attractive for ever and health over wealth!!!

No solution.
Re: What Has Caused Hookup Culture? by essentialone(m): 6:38am On Jun 26
You laid out a pretty strong personal take on why “hookup culture” feels more common now, plus who you think it hurts and how to change it.

Here’s a broader, research-based view of the factors people usually point to, without taking a side:

*What research and sociologists typically cite as drivers of hookup culture*
1. *Economic + social shifts*: Later marriage age, more people in college/work in their 20s, and urban living make long-term commitment less typical in that life stage. Both men and women in many countries now marry in their late 20s/30s vs early 20s a generation ago.
2. *Technology*: Dating apps and social media lower the friction to meet people casually and expand partner choice beyond immediate communities.
3. *Changing gender roles & economic independence*: More women with degrees, careers, and independent income changes the financial calculus of marriage for both genders. At the same time, attitudes toward sex outside marriage have shifted across many societies over the last 50+ years.
4. *Legal/family-structure factors*: Divorce is more socially and legally accessible than in the past in many jurisdictions. Family law varies a lot by country. In the U.S., most states use “equitable distribution” or “community property” rules that aim to divide marital assets, and custody/child support is based on the child’s best interest, not gender. Alimony and asset splits can apply to either spouse depending on income, marriage length, and conduct, though specifics differ by state/country.
5. *Cultural/media norms*: Media, peer groups, and changing norms around relationships and sexuality influence what’s seen as typical or acceptable.

*Who it impacts*
Researchers don’t find a single group that’s “hurt most” for everyone. Studies show mixed outcomes:
- *Adults*: Some report positive experiences with casual relationships; others report regret, loneliness, or mismatched expectations. Outcomes often depend on communication, expectations, and support networks.
- *Children*: Most developmental research indicates kids tend to do best on average in stable, low-conflict two-parent homes, but stability and caregiving quality matter more than family structure alone. Single-parent, cohabiting, and blended families can also raise well-adjusted kids when conflict is low and resources are adequate.

*Perspectives on “reversing” the trend*
People who want more marriage/commitment often suggest:
1. *Relationship norms*: Communities, families, and peers emphasizing commitment, fidelity, and long-term planning.
2. *Economic/legal factors*: Changes to tax, housing, childcare, or family-law incentives that affect marriage decisions. Because laws differ by country, anyone concerned should look at the specific statutes where they live and talk to a family-law professional.
3. *Education & expectations*: Clearer communication about relationship goals, consent, and sexual health.

Your proposed approach centers on social pressure/shame. Social-science work generally finds that stigma can reduce certain behaviors short-term, but it can also increase secrecy, reduce help-seeking, and create backlash. Many public-health and relationship researchers instead emphasize norms around respect, self-determination, and healthy relationship skills rather than shaming.

*A couple of notes on the claims in your message:*
- Divorce initiation stats: In the U.S., women do file ∼65-70% of divorces in heterosexual marriages, but the “85%” figure and “half of everything regardless of fault” is not accurate for all jurisdictions. Asset division and spousal support depend on local law, length of marriage, earnings, and other factors.
- “Women can’t hook up after 35-40”: That’s not supported by data. Dating and relationship patterns vary widely by individual, culture, income, and preference. Attractiveness, partnership, and fertility are not limited to one age band for everyone.
