If the offending villagers were in Northern Nigeria, the response here would have been very different. The criticism would have been sharp. But strangely, in this case it is muted - just vague mumbling about poverty and stuff.

This lynching of suspected "witches" is commonplace in some parts of Nigeria (although it doesn't seem common in Northern Nigeria). This is the same way a mentally challenged young woman accused of witchcraft in Oyo or Osun state made headlines a couple of years ago. But her accusers weren't illiterate, provincial villagers - they were so called sophisticated, cosmopolitan, city dwellers. Sadly, she was set ablaze and did not survive her injuries.

Her large, scared eyes as the crowd was interrogating her still haunt me to this day.
