Just Igbo for now. My Hausa is still shaky but I'll love to improve on it so I can become very fluent in Hausa.

Good.

Your head correct pass correct sef!

So many useless black parents nowadays raising children they failed by not teaching them their mother-tongue.

It may not be failed parenting especially if it is intertribal marriage and you are living in the city.

What the Bleep are you saying. You think speaking a language makes any one better than the other. With all your dialect speaking what do you have or are you smarter, more intelligent those who can't speak. A general language is what is important not a useless tongue that causes division amongst people. You better change your mindset

Being proud of who you are, keeping your identity with dignity and not being a dumb wannabe (who thinks by not speaking your mother tongue or any Nigerian language makes you "civilised" or "cool" ) makes you a more valuable black person in general.

There are many dumb black people that are the opposite and make other peoples think we are dumb idiots who just want to be like them.

I hope you mindset is not the latter!

If you parents raised you well, you will speak and hear your mother-tongue (or the local language of where you grew up) plus English FLUENTLY.

If only English is what you speak, they have failed at parenting! You are then a colo-mentality raised child.

You guys need to do something about urhobo language because it's seriously dieing out. I was at ughelli sometime last year and as big the town is. I did not for once hear anybody speak urhobo not even in that very busy market close to otovwodo where a good number of the traders are urhobo themselves, same scenario is unthinkable in Lagos even with it's very cosmopolitan nature.
A lot of urhobo people born in urhoboland particularly around sapele, uvwie, warri and ughelli are unable to speak their language

Feel sorry for you.

Except you marry someone who can speak a local Nigerian language and is determined to teach your kids, your lineage is destined to lose a core of its identity and be poor imitations of white people.

You're correct bro. I hardly see Yoruba or igbo adult who cannot speak their dialect. And also in igbo states or Yoruba states they communicate strictly in their dialect except they know you're not an igbo or a Yoruba person. Unlike here in Edo state where pidgin English is our primary dialect for communication

You feel me!

I currently have a group of adults in my clique who can't speak Edo language despite being born and raised here. One that can speak it very well is so ashamed to speak it in public..

I've yet to see where a group of Yoruba people are gathered and they are speaking English. Only among Edo people this happens.

I remember when I was at Ibadan 2013 for work, everyone was communicating in Youruba everywhere I went to including Banks and exotic fastfood restaurants.. their first attempt to speak to you is Youruba. The 50% of Youruba I learned was between those 3 months I spent in Ibadan. They only switch to English when they notice you are not one of the locals. Same thing when I went to Onitsha.

Come to Benin na you will see an old woman communicating to you first with English.
