Greetings all.

I work in a company and my take home is 450k after tax. My problem is I have been thinking of a skill to learn as this job would not last forever. Aside this job I do not have a skill and as a man I feel one should have a long lasting skill. Please any suggestions would be welcomed aside from online skills. Thank you .
Start a farming business: poultry, rabbit, fishery, tomato etc.

You could open a barbing saloon..

Hire a barber..

Then use the medium to start learning Barbing..

Thank me later..

Barbing shop is shit business especially if you don't get a trustworthy person to manage it and you don't know how to barb.

Disaster.

There are other businesses he can do with minimal supervision which I can tell him of but Intergrated has to tell me what job description/role/career that got him the 450,000 job so I can advise my younger siblings to tow that line of his as I am on the business path and would love my siblings to be less dependent on me.

The believe that building a house is a liability is totally wrong. What is the assurance that the business you are advising him to invest will succeed. Building or acquiring a house will establish stability first, and takes a lot of worries away.

450k is huge, especially in this country.

My advice is for you to learn how to save.

Cut down your expenses, don’t spend recklessly, don’t compete with co-workers and don’t try to impress anybody (including women).

Rent an affordable apartment, start up a business.

(Don’t start building any house immediately, because it’s a liability). It will only tie your wealth in one spot.

Imagine building a house with 30-50m in Lagos, only to get at least 2m yearly as a rent. How long will it take to get back the capital

A House is a long term investment + retirement plan.

Start a business first!

Go and open a church, that one doesn't need any special skills. Just be able to speak good English, have good dress sense, beautify your church in and out and get beautiful ladies as ushers. Tell people God called you to focus on prosperity and before you know it, you become a G.O and the rest is history...

I can teach you how to fix electronics if it's in your blood already. You don't have to be engaged to it but it can direct you towards procurement and distribution of quality electronics. I fix TV, led and lcds. I fix switching power supplies of any type. I understand electronics and the basics of electronics and science. I am going into renewables... Battery assembly, lithium, lifepo4 and all types of electric storage including street lamps and solar. If you understand all these, go to Ali, and bring the best of what people will need. I am targeting assembly, buy and assemble but Mehn no capital yet. So if you have the capital, try it. You can contact Felicity in China and be their distributor in your state but like I told you, you need to understand electronics first

thats not true. You will always regret not building a house. If you talk about 2m yearly rent then you are doing the calculations wrong because the land itself is increasing exponentially in value and should the day you decide to sell it you will get 4times your investment no matter the inflation.

Even if you learn a skill, you will retire one day, the best is to open a business so that even if you want to retire, you can still hand the business over to your children or wife, but for skill if you retire, the skill also retire with you.

Hope you know any business you don’t give your %100 will be a failure?

Real estate business is not all about building houses you can buy lands and keep it.

You are working in a bank, right?

Likely access bank.

Well, I understand your fears.

Just save up and acquire MBA.

Then consider switching from retail banking to investment banking.

To be sincere you are earning well already it's up to you to plan. In my opinion first build a robust account, then go for specialized certificates like Project Management or Digital Marketing. With the internet and Digitalization your complaints is not an issue. If you want a training on digital marketing or any other IT Support or Web services skills reach out to me on 08184397113 for guides

Why not get an investor to lease part of your building project for some years. Then use the money to complete the project. Investor will recover their capital + profit over a set period.

My bro/sis, 450k in this economy is not huge. Especially if OP has a family already and lives in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt. He can try to plan around it such that he can live averagely… but huge? Hell to the nah

Building a house is not easy my brother
You will only appreciate the post u quoted if u have built a house. At a point u will start regretting who sent u to build. When u see the volume of money leaving your account on daily basis and the house is still yet to be completed, u begin to question yourself if it is really a wise investment. Because when u go take recoup this money, how much is even the rent? Building a house is expensive & not for those coming up

Why?

Just give yourself like a year and half and save like 200k from it. You should be getting like 3.5m as savings.

Use it to set up phone accessories shop where you don't add much gain to your sales. You could opt for wholesales.
You just opened my eyes to that saving formula.
Just that my overhead much sha ( not directly though but as a first son/child, what can I do,)

sorry boss but the reason you are stuck is coz you never got a quantity surveyor to evaluate your project cost according to your available resources and now inflation has caught you unaware. If you knew the cost you would plan ahead and give your engineer a deadline and the project a turnkey contract.

Those saying 450K is more than enough to buy a land and start building do not really understand how expensive things are in Nigeria today. I earn slightly above what the OP mentioned, but believe you me, it's not been easy. If you live in Lagos, Abuja or PH and you are married with kids, you will understand. A 2 bedroom flat in an average neighborhood is over 700K. Cost of fuel and car maintenance is over 60/70K monthly in recent times. School fees for 2/3 children is over 200K per term (600/800K annually). Feeding takes over 100K monthly. Utilities and other miscellaneous dey ooo. Best thing na just to save enough and japa.
