Greetings all.

I work in a company and my take home is 450k after tax. My problem is I have been thinking of a skill to learn as this job would not last forever. Aside this job I do not have a skill and as a man I feel one should have a long lasting skill. Please any suggestions would be welcomed aside from online skills. Thank you .

Think of any investment, little or medium-scale. Talking on skill, I am a techy, not more I can add than to tell you to learn a tech stream.

450k is huge, especially in this country.

My advice is for you to learn how to save.

Cut down your expenses, don’t spend recklessly, don’t compete with co-workers and don’t try to impress anybody (including women).

Rent an affordable apartment, start up a business.

(Don’t start building any house immediately, because it’s a liability). It will only tie your wealth in one spot.

Imagine building a house with 30-50m in Lagos, only to get at least 2m yearly as a rent. How long will it take to get back the capital

A House is a long term investment + retirement plan.

Start a business first!

Do the value of the house depreciate? Even when you you get 2m monthly the value of the house still appreciate. If you continue thinking the way you are thinking you will end up not having a property. House is an asset to you and even to your children.

No much chances for growth in my department in and outside my company.
Your development and growth in and outside the organisation is in your hands.
First, you need to have focus development plan, i.e, your next move and how you want to get there.
You also need a career coach or a mentor regardless of whether you want to be an entrepreneur or intrapreneur.
Remember what got you here will not get you there and opportunities favours those who prepared.

450,000naira is it not enough, for a starter in a company job?

In Onitsha, Many People Are Not Earning Up To 50,000naira Monthly In Their JOB.

Read Op write-up and advise accordingly.

He's asking you to suggest a skill he can learn and not to compare his salary with another.

Your expenses will always grow quickly to match your income. Many people in Nigeria will see N450k/month as a windfall.

I know people who make N400k/month with family and are surviving. Then I know a spinster in the Island who makes about N1.2m/month with no family and she is always complaining financially.

Go figure!

I don't believe a company is paying you N450k/month with no skills. It is fair to guess that you are engaged in an illegitimate enterprise.

If I will advice, I will say you should join a saving scheme and do this for a set period of time without any excuse. While doing this, I mean the saving, start thinking of business you can do it doesn't necessarily mean that it should be a business that require special skill, buying and selling goes a long. Just have a proper plan . I am sure with dedication and prayers you will succeed.

Those saying 450K is more than enough to buy a land and start building do not really understand how expensive things are in Nigeria today. I earn slightly above what the OP mentioned, but believe you me, it's not been easy. If you live in Lagos, Abuja or PH and you are married with kids, you will understand. A 2 bedroom flat in an average neighborhood is over 700K. Cost of fuel and car maintenance is over 60/70K monthly in recent times. School fees for 2/3 children is over 200K per term (600/800K annually). Feeding takes over 100K monthly. Utilities and other miscellaneous dey ooo. Best thing na just to save enough and japa.

Even if you learn a skill, you will retire one day, the best is to open a business so that even if you want to retire, you can still hand the business over to your children or wife, but for skill if you retire, the skill also retire with you.

Great, someone earnings this sum only needs an investment skill.put 50% of your salary every month into buying of foreign stocks, futures and commodities, within five years you will swimming in millions.

This is better because as the day goes by, you will get older and weary when you will not be able to sell that your skill again.

Send your money on errand to work for you and bring back good returns.

however with this amount you can acquire as many DS as possible with just a little out of a month salary.

DS is short for DIGITAL SKILL(S)!
I mentor on this and also help interested peeps with DS to master how to create revenue with their DS.
wittyness
Can you give example of the digital skill you are talking about.

You could save from your salary and use your savings to buy a land, sink a borehole or well in the land, fence it and use it for agricultural skills such as rearing of snails, fishes and poultry. You could also plant crops like corn, ugu leaves, bitter leaves, etc in the land

It is funny that people are not responding to the request of the op, rather it's the 450k per month that they're interested in, and they're teaching him how to spend it.

The guy is asking for advice on a skill he can learn.

The skill you can learn depends on your area of interest. What is that thing that interests you?

But first of all, you need to invest in yourself. You need higher capacity to run a business. Learn the rudiments of personal development, emotional intelligence, critical thinking and how to handle failure.

Then ask yourself what is that service lacking in your environment? That's something people would be willing to pay for and that's what I advise you to consider

1. Start saving at least 150k every month.

2. Learn a high paying skill example cyber security, Data analytics or data analysis, UI/UX design etc. Don't be ignorant about these I.T skills because they are very high paying and you could be earning above 600k monthly when you get jobs.

3. Thank me later 😎
