How is the Surname your father's name? Isn't Surname a name that belongs to your lineage.

yes it's even a custom in some cultures. The son can bare the father's name instead of the family name as surname.

I was using my grandfather's name but my dad told me to change it to his name when I was registering for ssce back then including a my sister's. My son is also using my own native name. Every mallam with him kettle

It's possible but you will have to support the birth certificate with affidavit especially in the future if you have to justify the father-son relationship between you guys

Very possible but your child might not be able to benefit from states bursaries for students...



You can make your own name your surname for your children but....

Give your child whatever name you want no big deal, if the child grows he will still decide if he wants to bear your name.most people these days just bear what they want and you have a hard time figuring where they are from

If you ever need to change your own surname name, you don't need to alter anything on the birth certificate.

But in case of any official documentation, how would you reconcile that , different last name?

Your son is your son. You can give him any surname you wish. When he grows up, he can "shenk" the name and the lineage you wished for him. And if he likes he can go back to his ancestral name as well.

Nothing is cast in stone when it comes to names.

I remember, when I told my dad I don't want to be called a particular name again, he chuckled and said that's why I gave you 8 different names....Feel free to use any of all of them!

No implication bro but you should bear it in mind that your son will some day think that way too because it is no more ideal.

If your first name is not a traditional namel and you want a traditional surname for your children, you can use your middle name ( which i believe will be a traditional name) as their surname. By "traditional" i mean Nigerian native name. Good Luck bro.

One if you a Yoruba, I will seriously advice you against that. The fact that you're in terms with your dad doesn't mean he's not your blood, and that's a fact you can't change. We can't choose who our father are, but we can choose to be a better father to our kids. I wish you the best has you make the right decision.

Why not? You can use your first name as your son's surname.
