Good day nairalanders. I believe this is a great forum with lots of intelligent folks.. and that is why I have come to seek your counsel. Even though I haven't met anyone here but nairaland is like my online family

I think these are some key facts to note before you dish your advice (s). Here we go;

-I am a 23 years old male.
-I am the only son and eldest in a family of 2 and my dad is late.
-I am in 100 level (sponsored by my mum's relations) doing a 4 years course but sorry to say this, I don't rate school at all.. just there for the certificate (even though the course is highly rated)
-I am a pump attendant on a 25k salary (night work 7PM to 6AM) with one night off in a week.
-I have a nice USA used HP laptop that is laying idle in my room and my strong Tecno camon which can be used to learn some valuable skills.
-Lastly, I have the zeal to learn an online skill that can be very profitable in 3 to 6 months time and would stand the test of time in a long time to come; but I don't know which, how or where to start from. I seriously need to add another source of income (online) as this my current work is exhausting coupled with my schooling. No rest at all.

Pls my elders in the house, I sincerely need your advice at this critical point in my life. I don't want to make a grave mistake of not learning an online skill and be left out in the digital word. I don't want to continue forever in paid employment. It's no fun. I want to help myself and my family. I don't want to explain tire..

Kindly feel free to ask me whatever you may need to know. I will be reading from the comments. Thanks.
You didn't tell your course, I don't know if that's deliberate. Look for online training or course related to what you are studying

2. You can also try data science, cyber security or programming

Learn programming but be ready to solve algorithm problems and data structures,it's the big boys hustle.

You can take like 6 months to one year to learn it stage by stage. You can start from YouTube or get a mentor. Most programmers are well paid and there are lots of remote jobs available.

You can use lots of US remote jobs search platforms or LinkedIn to get jobs, just ensure you build up a professional profile, include some of your work experiences and you're good to go, keep building your portfolio and be ready to start smiling to the bank.

You can also learn it from a reputable computer school like I did.

there are many tech job it must not be program ,

I have posted lots of skills you can learn while using your laptop. Don't let anyone tell you that you will make 1 million in one month or so. Dedicate at least 3 months to learning a course using Coursera, Udemy and the likes of them, you can even check YouTube and some sites. Skills like Web design, Graphics design, copywriting, UI/UX design are something people can't do without, you can key into any one of them and start freelancing on either fiverr or Upwork to use those skills to earn in dollars. It all starts with your dedication and pray it works for you. Don't be greedy, pick your stance and work on it.

Love how you laid out your situation... and gave time frame. Don't know much about learning online skills and making money within 3 to 6 months. Chew on this .... whatever skill you learn online to seek online employment/earnings .... you are competing with others worldwide with the same skill at higher levels and experience. These are the ones that will be posting fantastic incomes and lead others to believe that once they aquire the skill their income will be up there. Not that you wouldn't get jobs ... but would not be what you will be expecting ... neither the frequency of jobs. That may come eventually... if you keep upgrading your skills and broadening your experience. From my observation if you want to go this route.... I'll suggest you do something that has to do with writing.
From your write up you have very good writing skills and are already up the ladder above most. It is better you capitalize on your strength rather than start from the crowded bottom. This can be like an online teacher .... helping those who are preparing for English exams.
If you decide to go full time for a skilled job ... to be independent ... I'll suggest mechanic or refrigeration. For mechanic ... study online at nights... volunteer at a shop if and when you have time during the day. Specialize in a particular aspect ... be a master at that. E.g ... solving overheating problems .... study everything available on cooling systems in cars and trouble shooting. It is a verrrry common problem and one that must be attended to in person....and in a hurry. The kazeems will help boost your business with their ignorance.

Ok so I'm gonna say something at this point .

Someone mentioned "learn programming " and I can see the responses he got ... Forget HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT e.t.c ...forget all that crypto, Forex , digital marketing ....

But il say this yes Tech is your surest way of leaving poverty in the next 3 months .

But not as people say it .. (don't do web development or all that frontend and backend shit)

If I were to give one solid advice as my Indian colleagues are doing il say this :

Don't learn programming

Instead learn a CloudNative tool like KUBERNETES
But first you learn Linux, virtualization, Networking , Containerization , then Kubernetes,

Now listen , you start contributing to OPEN SOURCE via GitHub every fucking day ..

Then pick up Technical Writing on these same things ... Join the tech community, we are not loud , but see people get doings like mad

If you do all these and in 4 months you are making at least $700-$1000 dollars Monthly , by December 2023.

See all those people writing off programming up there , are because they only know Web development , frontend , backend people , and that whole HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT nonsense is crowded and saturated ...

I dare anyone here to show me any KUBERNETES ENGINEEER , or Kubernetes enthusiast for the last 4 months who isn't making at least 500 dollars Monthly

Send me an email

Il drop you a Mentorship Group link

The way people like you are quick to mention or recommend programming anytime someone ask for advice on a skill to learn, one will think that it's something everyone can do..You people are gradually bastardising this field and making it look like a get rich quick something.... 95% of Acclaimed programmers in Nigeria only started programming because of this same thing you're preaching to the OP and that is why most of them are and will remain quacks.. Nowadays i wouldn't even advice any company to hire Nigerian programmers because all of them are in it with the hope of getting rich quick.. But one thing i really love about that field is that, if 100 people Start the journey today, 90 will give up along the way, and 5 will end up becoming quacks... the field just has a way of filtering the best and those that really have the passion for it..

Though I might say the poster u quoted , got it wrong and not to sound harsh or rude, but in your life never ever talk off or write off TECH as a proven way of leaving poverty right now .

Infact I blame all these people who peddle HTML, CSS AND JAVASCRIPT NONSENSE. "PROGRAMMING IS THE LEAST WAY RIGHT NOW OF MAKING IT IN TECH"

The Indians never have this mindset and it's why my colleagues keep bringing in mentees every fucking day ...

Meanwhile we Nigerians are quick to write it off or discourage newbies looking to jump into tech and yes you can get into it as a Get rich Quick scheme ,

Nigerians are the smartest people who would jump into something out of poverty and fuel it with "Poverty-as-a-Passion"

Im only correcting this your mentality incase you have younger ones or kids who might make it in the TECH ECOSYSTEM.

FORGET PROGRAMMING , HTML, JAVASCRIPT, CSS, FRONT END , UI/UX AND ALL THAT NOISE ..

Find me one person who is a CLOUDNATIVE KUBERNETES NEWBIE for the last 4 months and in that category you mentioned , and let's check something .

Truth is we follow the bandwagon , saturate the space and then blame the whole Tech Ecosystem .

If this guy up here follows the advice I placed , in 3 months he isn't only making at least $700 monthly upwards, but also collaborating , contributing and networking with Indians, Americans, and more in the tech space ..

You are talking of Nigerian companies ..go and ask how many real techie you think are applying to Nigerian companies ?

I'm actually into web development and I started learning html, CSS and JavaScript a while ago but I noticed this field is getting over saturated, every Tom, dick and Harry is now jumping into it and I know I have to start thinking outside the box if I want to make it in this tech industry because right now, web development is getting choked up, even ChatGPT dey spit out codes pass some of the so called web developers
