MimiSheWrote:Go preach to them in that Plateau community where they are about to bury ten people en-masse, see if they don't stone you to death. Or go to southern Kaduna. For most people leaving is more about security of life and property, and not about money. |

MimiSheWrote:As Expected how? ... Thats a mentality or mindset of "as long as you are in Nigeria, anyone giving advise as this from outside has more superior understanding of how things work" - I reject this and can be linked to Nigerians that Japa like 10yrs ago, definitely NOT the ones leaving the country say in the last 3yrs Many of Nigerians thats left lately are well informed and as a matter of fact well grounded, many had businesses, well skilled and the last election was what broke the camels back in their choices of relocation - Some even were working overseas from Nigeria. I think your advise would be stale to majority of people who intend to actually Japa these days. Comparing the dark there and Nigeria would have made a better post |

do you pay police directly on the road abroad? do you buy fuel for generator? do you pay vigilante where you live? i pay OSPAC in rivers state do you pump water from the ground? did you dig borehole? do you buy 'sanitation bucket' when you run your business? my sister, do you know that prostitutes are charging N500 short time? you are a woman, do you think its okay for a woman to sell her body for N500? less than $1 are you advising that person to stay back in Nigeria? or be aware of 'the dark side of the moon' before travelling? what could be worse than what she's already going through in Nigeria ![]() do you know that there are Nigerians in foreign prisons who are comfortable compared to their lives in Nigeria? because they eat 3 times a day in the prison!!! |

12inchess:I wonder how many of these Japareians think of pension and their old age. Most people in the western world should have a good pension for their old age .If you are Japaring at age 40- 50, you have nothing. If your pension is property back home, then why bother selling all in the first place to Japa? High risk, low reward! |

Some one up there called her stupid for this write up and as usual the angry Nigerians come out in numbers to attack poster for this topic. Very well written topic, everything written up there is true. In case you are wondering, yes I am currently living in Nigeria and couldn't be any happier than I was when living in the UK. Everything is different and better for ME here in Nigeria, lets start from the very beginning. Healthcare - I was left for dead in a London hospital, thank God I survived. I survived not because of better healthcare but because of a kind doctor who decided to investigate the medical problem further when everyone else gave up. Kids - I was lucky to be able to have children following the medical negligence thanks to God and to a Nigerian DR. Security - Cars were stolen in my neighbourhood on a daily basics and it is still happening, by the time you wake up, your car is already in eastern Europe - long gone. Thank God for insurance which will however take 5months to pay out and only a percentage of the car amount. My friend's house was broken into last month, his dogs scared the thieves away however goods worth almost £1K was taken in less than 2 minutes. NO - I was not living in barking or Peckham, I was living in NW London and house on my street are worth £900K and above at that time. Electricity - Gas, Electricity, Car and Water monthly cost £650. Money - what everyone has been waiting to hear. I used to earn a very good wage but I worked 60hrs per week. My take home after tax was plus overtime was £4100 however my bills and mortgage was £2450 monthly. I had no time for my kid, my poor child didn't get to see me at all. Childcare cost was £850 per month and I was very lucky. Mental Wellbeing - What life will I have after working 60hrs from Mon-Friday and Saturday morning. I couldn't do anything for I was physically and mentally exhausted. Depression began to kick in as all I did was work, Relationship - what is that and where is the time for that? Home training - How do I train my child when I am working, at least I could afford a nanny. I began to dream of a better life for myself, a life where I could live and enjoy it not just exist. Africa suddenly became more attractive as it is the only place where I wouldn't have to work like a crazy person, they said US is worst. I worked as a senior nurse just for the record on a £70000 annual salary My people I started to plan ooooo, I failed on my first try at relocating because life was so hard and stressful in Lagos. Second time round, I saved money for 5 years, yes 5 good years and invested well. Now I can happily say I am living my best life in Nigeria, we go back to the UK for vacation during the holidays. God willing if business remains good, I will use money made in naira to buy my house in the UK. Moral of this story, as there are people dreaming to japa abroad, there are so many also dreaming to japa to Nigeria / Africa. |

This post is misguided. People who japa through corner corner, plan to stay illegally, they usually have a worse fate than staying in Nigeria. However, people who japa properly, especially if semi skilled or skilled, are much better off outside Nigeria. Bear in mind that some professions, like law, are easier for nigerians practising in Nigeria. One compromise is remote workers. MimiSheWrote: |

Dog wey wan get lost and chop sheet, nor dey hia whistle. Only if and I repeat, only if Africans work half as hard as they do in these foreign countries, Nigeria especially would be better off. Indeed, like the old days in Western Nigeria, when they visit or study abroad, they would not wait for a day to come back home. To add to Op reasons those abroad refuse to come back home. Shame and failure to meet expectations while bragging to gullible at home. Leave those slowpokes that sell everything and use their life savings to travel alone. Their reward is in heaven. The old ones heard about free social services for those who have slaves for them, they think they are included. Until they find out that they will join the natives living outside, in shelters and picking bottles to survive. As for the dirt poor and desperados at home. Your chances of survival is even better at home where you cannot freeze to death, relatives would throw handouts at you, become All Right Sir, thugs or load carriers. Why? You have to cross desert and sea if you survive organ harvesting, Arab slavery alive and booming, become female and male sex slaves or drowning. Then and only after these are you better off risking your life to JAPA. You hia me wellu. |

It's been a while I read a post to a topic that divide opinions like Japa that is balanced and on points. People are frustrated back home and I can understand when they attack someone who has different view about Japa which they hang on as the last hope of a common man. Imagine graduating with 2.1 and jobless for years, you might be frustrated to even consider moving to Somalia but logic should prevail cos some countries are worse off than Nigeria and Japa crew should always do their research. jiggar: |

banku:Go to mile 12 and see them work "half has hard" and go home with peanuts Go to establishment where they owe them salaries and other benefits even after working "half has hard" You work "half has hard" for 6hrs but your travelling time without pay due to Lagos traffic is 8hrs. Yet you come home, no light and you will still pay phcn for darkness at the end of the month |

cooooooks:I know MANY lawyers in Nigeria, some with over 20 years experience and some recent grads that I helped pay their way through university. Lawyers don't make much money in Nigeria. As a fast food cook in the USA I lived better than lawyers with 10 to 20 years experience in Nigeria. chiself:My mother migrated to the USA at age 55. Her Nigerian employer pays her ZERO pension but she collects a huge pension by Nigerian standards here in the USA. She caters for MULTIPLE families in Nigeria with her USA pension. In the USA every senior citizen over age 65 or 67 is entitled to a minimum pension of around $600 even of you never worked a day in your life. Google it, NY Times wrote a big story about it years ago. Here - https://www.nytimes.com/1995/04/16/nyregion/for-elderly-immigrants-a-retirement-plan-in-us.html Many many immigrant senior citizens are on this "free retirement" payment. Our Nigerian community here is full of such people. Good Luck to Nigerians! |

MimiSheWrote:Mimi what you said was basically the truth but I would.love t change a perception in you too. The reason why most of us leave Nigeria is cause no one wants to get there hands stained anymore. So therefore we are just here suffering from the sins of our fathers, which is the sin of living on another man's sadness. This isn't what happens in the abroad. The abroad gives you a life of getting paid by the energy you put into making life beautiful for each and everyone living abroad. But over here you make money off someones ignorance. That's how the government survives too, so why do you think anything good will happen. So please if you like share tracts about how life seems to be the same or a little worse over there than here, it won't stop the average travel agency from making money from the ignorant nigerians. Moreso there shouldn't Be a travel agency in the first place. When there is internet. Nigeria is a damn heartless place caused by the knowledge of god |

Most of those struggling never took time to build their capacity to be useful in another man's land. They have this mentality that they can earn their meagre pay here there with the currency symbol swapped. Never taught of asking what sells. Everyday USA is welcoming highly skilled individuals in fields that support their dwindling industries. They need medical care and are short in skilled hands. Same way we can't process our crude or scale up and mechanize our farms is how they can't train enough medical doctors cost effectively. Instead of lamenting and sending the wrong set of people to advances nations, let's start prioritizing what they lack that we can cheaply provide and allow them help us also. |

chiself:You are the one who mentioned pension with the implication that migration to the USA might result in old age poverty. The FACT is that many employers in Nigeria, public & private, are not paying the pensions they promised. I know MANY such people living in Nigeria who can't get their pensions. If the MINIMUM PUBLIC PENSION in the USA is $600, can you tell me how many full time workers earn $200 per month in Nigeria? Wanna guess? On the other hand, I know MANY people who migrated to the USA at over 50 years of age who have made a good life for themselves. It's nice to wallow in misplaced pride, I get it, but the FACTS are that the USA is far and away better than Nigeria in almost every way except the availability of cheap sex. Good Luck to Nigerians |
