1. Algeria produces about 4 times more oil than we do so more money (actually around the same amount of crude, but for a population of 44.5 million people, compared to our 200 million and more).

2. South Africa has a diversified economy and as such has more money.

3. Egypt has a diversified economy and is a tourism monster. (Everyone must see the Pyramids and the Sphinx at least once. That's billions of kash in hard currency without doing anything)
your contradicting yourself . Algeria doesn't produce more oil than Nigeria. nigeria is largest producer of crude oil in Africa.

It's still godawful though. 200 million people or more sharing 65 billion dollars? We should be at trillions of dollars if we weren't such a one trick pony economy.

True, but diversification in this case means a diversified export PLUS tax income...like we should be exporting more of other things like raw materials, and seriously manufactured goods and services
It is nothing but an unrepentant unserious country

Interesting..so according to you or omokri, the terrible leadership and bad government that has plagued Nigeria is not to be blamed but her 200M "entitled" citizens?

Wow.

Did you bother to imagine how things would be if there was good leadership with the so called small budget?

Imagine if greedy politicians like Reno and others were not cornering the common wealth into their's and their families ' personal accounts.

What

Why am I suprised? If a minister can blame bad roads and it's lack of repairs on his constituents hence his need to be given a brand new SUV.

While being the main oil producer in Africa, Nigeria was also the largest crude oil exporter in the continent. The country sold nearly 1.6 million barrels of oil daily to the international market in 2021

I agree 100% it is awful. South Africa spends more on education than our entire federal budget.

Export only affects forex and hence currency value it makes no real difference to revenues. Our gdp is larger than SA. The redesign they have a higher budget is because they collect more taxes. If we collected more taxes even without exporting we would have more revenue and higher budget.

Yeah, the problem with Nigeria is that we don't want to take the hard decisions to diversify our economy, get the non-taxpaying bit of the country to pay taxes, and reduce and actually fight corruption.

Largest Economies In Africa 2023:

1. Nigeria
GDP- 477B dollar
Budget- 33B

2. Egypt
GDP- 475B
Budget- 97B

3. South Africa
GDP- 405B
Budget- 132B

4. Algeria
GDP- 195B
Budget- 98B

This is simply because Nigeria is collecting lesser taxes despite having bigger economy. And also unlike other countries, Nigeria runs a federal system of govt with components states having their own budgets.

One way we can fight corruption is by improving our tax to gdp ratio to 50% from 10%

More people paying taxes -more eyes on government= hell let loose for any stealing

But look at it, 33 billion dollars, if spent 'wisely without corruption' on 200 million people won't go far. At all. Corruption makes the bad situation ten times worse.

Algeria produces 1.47 m barrels per day compared to our 1.7 m barrels per day, but they got 44 million to our 200 million people, which means they have a better revenue per capita, meaning more money for things like improving their oil capacity.

If we want to be like Algeria...listen up....we got to diversify our economy, and if we want to surpass them, we got to become an exporter of manufactured goods and servicies.

Oil should not be our only saurce.

I've been saying this for donkey years that Nigeria is not as rich and financially bouyant as many Nigerians think we are.

..in a nutshell, Nigeria is a poor country with massive potentials

I think generally I will say Nigeria is a rich country.. just that this wealth are stolen daily and its difficult to see where its going... also.. we only depend on natural gas/crude oil.. I believe if we explore other resources like the gold, Iron ore, Coal Limestone, Uranium and so on... then we can be considered rich if we really exports this resources and use the funds for normal things...

And I will say we are rich individuals as a citizens..

Atleast 8 out of 10 Nigerian man has a standard house of his or her own

Atleast 5 out of 10 Nigerian man has his own car or can afford one..

Nigeria is third japa country in the world moving to the UK... tell me how many African countries citizens can afford around 15m each to move abroad to study...

This really doesn't tell you much. How are those budgets funded?

For instance I can have a large, bloated budget
that is almost 100% funded by borrowing.

A better measure is the GDP which gives a clearer indication of a country's productive capacity.
We're still behind in terms of GDP.

We can double our tax revenues without the poor. The people who really pay taxes in this country and Salaried workers and companies. Most self employed do not pay their fair share of taxes. There are also a lot of taxes that are not being paid. Just see how much Wike raised in Abuja in 1 month when he asked Abuja. Residents to pay their ground rents. There are many leakages all over the place without targeting the poor. In most countries the rich pay 80% of the taxes. In Nigeria, the rich and the middle class do not pay the right amount of taxes.

The problem we have though is a structural one. We have a disproportionate amount of poor people. Poor people have no money to pay taxes and need the most services from government.

SHUT UP. IT IS NOT TRUE.

If we had enough money coming in, you will see the effect.

Do you think there is no corruption in Saudi, UAE and co?

There is HEAVY corruption there, but the fact that they have a tiny population means that the govt can easily fix the country even with the corruption.

So having a lot of money coming in, will always negate the effects of corruption.

You notice corruption because we don’t have enough money coming in.
who is this foool? You should be the one to shut up. If all the countries you mentioned above have been looted and raped the way politicians here do in Nigeria there will be no Saudi and UAE today. Imagine if they have
Abacha, Obasanjo, Tinubu, Buhari, Atiku, Abuldusalam, IBB looting in billions of dollars, turn after turn while keeping the loots in foreign banks. What would be left of UAE and Saudi.
