After trying medicine 3 times. I had to settle for a science course. I'm currently done with my first degree, NYSC and doing a little job by the side.

The thing is, i want to go back to medical school. I have a burning desire to study medicine, i dream about it everyday and would be rather unfulfilled if i don't study medicine.

The questions i have are:

1. I intend to start my study in my late 20s. Hopefully 28,29,or at 30years old.

2. What are the disadvantages of studying medicine and graduating in my late 30s.?

3. How is employment at that age?

What are the difficulties i should expect?

Be brutally honest. Thanks

I dont have the πŸ’― accurate answers to your questions but one thing i know is, whether or not you study medicine at 29, 6 years will pass... How you make use of the 6 years matters, either to pursue your dream or make yourself better.
If otherwise, you know the rest.

Go and make a living with your current degree. Time is wasting.
If you didn't make it through medical school once, you probably won't make it on the 9th try.
There are a great number of university graduates who attempted medicine.
The lucky ones leave school with a degree.
I know loads who left with nothing. Why?
I must do medicine.
Understand that the knowledge you have gained from medicine will stay with you. It wasn't a waste.
Move on.

Follow your dream. No age is too much to achieve your dream as long as you have the mental strength to withstand the pressure.

If it's science course you studied in your first degree, they can consider you for direct entry in 200L.

Pls go ahead with your heart desire to medicine.

My childhood friend was once in your shoes.
Wanted to study medicine in unilag, got zoology. Came out with first class. Uni wanted to retain him as junior lecturer but he said he wanted to pursue medicine. They gave him the opportunity to study medicine and now he is through today.

That guy is hot cake now.

Medical school anywhere is not for the weak.

Infact, it should be easier in Nigeria given the fact that you are not exposed to the best of technologies and fields and so the range for testing your knowledge is restricted to how much of your basic textbooks you can cram.

Study medicine in Germany or the United states, and na your body go tell you.
Exposing us to technology would have made it more easier.

If u have the strength and energy to pursue medicine as a career in the university pls go for it.... Considering the fact that you have already gotten your first degree.

I have a friend who just recently got admitted to study medicine while his mate have graduated from the course he was studying before dropping out due to lack of interest.

It is good to identify your passion early in life.

I wrote jamb 9th times though to study medicine but I didn't get it.. I latter discovered that it wasn't my passion so I lossed interest.

I latter settled for engineering and technology and my passion lies here. Learning one or two skills related to my course of study as been helpful

Choose school that would be easier to get in, u know the competitive nature of getting admission in that faculty??

All the best.

Thanks for the mention.

After 10yrs of being a doctor, I have just a few words for you...

1) follow what drives your passion

2) medical school is NO JOKE!!!

3) get ready for a rollercoaster of regrets, heartaches, and tears, mixed with a life full of contentment, fulfillment and the passion to save more lives

4) I hope you're not going in for the money 🀣🀣 walllahi there is no money in medicine, especially in this nonsense country

5) you have to read, and not just to read and pass but to read and understand.

6) medicine is not just a science, but an art, and an apprenticeship... You learn new things even when you graduate

7) pray

cool pray again

9) never ever read in a silo... Join discussion groups once you get in, don't make that mistake of being a lone ranger

10) Las Las Γ¨ go be πŸ‘πŸΏπŸ‘πŸΏ

Wishing you good luck 🀞🏿

Since you specifically requested for my opinion, I'll give it to you from my own point of view. Medicine in Nigeria is deplorable, stressful and not worth it at all. Doctors are complaining, doctors are broke and many are Japa-ing. If I should choose all over again, I won't choose Medicine. Medicine will take your time from you if you're not careful.

At 29, you can choose to study Medicine if you wish but I'll advise that you have a skill alongside with it because the salary of doctors is just barely enough for you to survive. Some centres have toxic senior colleagues that you'll be lamenting why you're in the medical profession.

I currently have an house officer who is 37years old and she older than me but I'm her senior colleague. There is hierarchy in Medicine and some senior colleagues abuse such privileges.

Asides that Medicine is a cool profession and a Nobel one at that.

Navigating through medical school can be stressful though, it not about being brilliant but about how smart and intelligent you're. I hardly read when I was in Medical school, infact I did a whole lot of other things outside of Medicine and I was always on my phone 24/7 yet I never failed any course. It's about knowing and applying yourself.

To answer your questions specifically, there are no disadvantages graduating in your late 30s.

It doesn't affect your employment, infact as a doctor, you can hardly get out of job, there's always vacancy. Always because of the mass Exodus of Doctors. So you'll definitely get a job and a good salary especially if you have surgical skills as an advantage.

The difficulties are more of individualized though. Some find it relatively easier and some find it extremely difficulty but definitely challenges will be there
