You picking up her call once in a while and telling her to keep to only messages when your wife is around would have stabilized her emotions and keep her stable for when you need her. If she can't keep to messages, block her number when wife is around and unblock her when you're alone.

She has an all-or-nothing kinda emotion. That's definitely the reason for her restrictions earlier. She knows herself. I like your comment, it is reasonable. In addition, OP does not realize that divorced women or single moms will likely go for married men due to their experience.
