I owe my parents a lot till they die. I used to think like you but after I got my own kids and went through a lot of stress, sacrifices and selflessness , It was then I understood what my poor parents must have gone through and sacrificed for me to get to this stage in life.

I will continue to take care and reward my parents for everything they did and didn't do for me till they die.

Even if your parents have it all and you still have yours, its still the children's responsibility to cater for them at their old age.
We only pray that such monies are not used for hospital bills.

It is the parents responsibilities to provide resources for their own old ages. I have seen lots of old people who are happier in nursing homes, I will prefer nursing homes when I grow old as I never want to be a burden to.mh kids.

My mum has trained all of us to that point where we don't get to ask her for anything, but cater for ourselves and she as a person still works and has a retirement plan that can take care of her even when she is old. Forget! that woman's retirement benefits will be enough for her and even extended family members. I believe the writer is just encouraging us to plan not to be burdens to our children. But not literally saying you shouldn't help in taking care of your parents when things get tough for them.

Parents save and invest first their old age. I need nothing from my kids in old age. That is the way it should be as the parents have decades to plan, save and invest money. We have to change our culture to reflect realities on ground. Parents have no business having kids without a means to care for them.

Let’s be open minded. Don’t let culture cloud your mind, culture is peer pressure from dead people. It is not necessary right.

OP is right. Your children shouldn’t be your retirement. Parents that give birth to multiple children they cannot afford to take of, thinking these children would hustle, grow up to become to become great then take care of them, are wicked & terrible people. They deserve to be disown by these same children when the time comes

Most people don’t know the word is a “double edge sword”, there is always balance, blessings & curses, light & darkness. What is the reverse of this verse. A bad man (/woman) make no provision for their children

2) 1 Timothy 5:8 - If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household (family), he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

It is your parents responsibility to care for you and not the other way round.

However!

The bible also talks about giving to your parents, not necessary because they don’t have or they need it but it is to the benefit of the giver. Giving is an act of love, your gifts gladings the heart of your parents and they in turn proclaim blessings on you

When you grow up and start raising children, you can choose not to make them your retirement plan. Children are the only investment a dutiful parent will never retire from its ROI. Not even your marriage that you placed above your own parents can be your retirement plan because your spouse will divorce you.

Only Failed parents and products of failed parenting/dysfunctiomal parents believe that they don’t owe one another anything

Yes parenthood is a Responsibility but some Responsibilities are not definite or owed

To Feed U, House U, Clothe U.. those are basic Responsibilities.
But sending U to school , up to University level is not a Definite Responsibility. Many parents couldnt send their children to school because they couldn't afford it and heaven didnt fall. No one will arrest a parent dor not sending their kids to school

But ur parents sent U to school from primary to higher institution that laid foundation for U to have a well paid job or gave u the knowledge to start a business. U OWE THEM!!
Even if they didnt send U to school, U still owe them for other things they did for U.

Parents give mental support, Spiritual Support, Emotional support. Parents sacrifice their own pleasures for children.

He has a good point but not entirely right. I inferred in the submission dt as a parent, don't spend your entire life and old age in d name of raising children. As u show love & perform your responsibilities over them, all plan your old age along.


For instance, there are some retirees still paying huge loans they took while in service.

If it's public schools your income can afford for them that'll allow you plan your old age along, don't hesitate. Not earning 250k & have three children in private varsities dt will make you indebted & vulnerable to your children when you retire
