Pray that you don't have to wait for your children before you eat in your old age.Plan your retirement and don't be a liability to anybody. In America, people now work past the age of 70 years because they cannot retire and their kids cannot fund their retirement, those kids too will pay for the mortgage, student loan, child support etc.If you are wise and you still can work, plan and plan. Not all parents need their children money during retirement! |

Sirchiboy:But governments all over the world make children their continuity plan. Why not the parents that bare them. A man should reap where he does. When you are old and frail, who else is better to care for you and protect you Other people's children? |

Sirchiboy:If taking care of your parents is what you see as a burden, then what is your purpose of existence? If you’re broke, it’s understandable but that doesn’t even justify such orientation. It should be a pride for every children to take proper care of their parents. |

Sirchiboy:When you're old, out of employment, your pension is not enough, your bills are choking, make sure you don't ask a dime from any child. Else you'll be a hypocrite. |

ibedun:Your parents disregarded economic reality for you to survive. They forgot about their own future plans so that YOU could have a future Here you are saying all sorts of gibberish about economic reality. Your parents had the choice, yes, but they decided to forgo their own happiness for YOU. When you became an adult at 18, they could have made the decision to stop supporting you, but no, it was then that your demands got higher and they braced up to weather the storm. All you saying nonsense on this thread are children of dysfunctional homes, no doubt. |

Olurondo:How many of those parents are happy? Do you know the number of them that die from depression? Social workers, nursing homes blah blah blah are artificials that can never replace what a child does for the parents. |

Parents are out second God. If my parents were to be alive, there's nothing I won't do for them. This Mumu thinks it's easy to raise a kid through school, all the money the used in raising you, they could have channeled it to the retirement plans. To me, it's always Parents First, Siblings second. When you married it will now be, your wife/husband and kids first, parents second, siblings last |

FreeIgboho:Don't but the child has a divine responsibility to take care of the parents, rich or poor; good, bad or ugly.... Parenting is not just responsibility. It is also about love and mutual family support! |

In Yoruba prayers we always say. Olohun ajeki ojeun Omo. Meaning you will eat the fruit of your labour. Since you don't want your kids to owe you anything then may I pray to you you won't eat the fruit of your labour. Hope you can say an Amen to that. Joseph honoured his father Jacob with wealth before his demise 🤑. Only a broke, hateful or vengeful son will say what you said. I hope you learn soon. |

Mariangeles:My sister, let's be very careful with logic in English as it is one of the reasons our country is not going forward today. The word "owe", means an obligation. I suggest helping your parents and siblings as much as you can but you do not owe them. Why, because you are in this world of the actions of your parents and not vice verce. You parents are adults who choose to have unprotected sex, get pregnant and bring a child into the world. See, all these are there actions which has nothing to do with the child. I have seen lots of couple who decide not to have kids and I do not judge them at àll. On other hand, the parents have an obligation to take care of hjeir responsibilities, feed, clothe, send to school and provide a roof for the kids. These are not favours but parental responsibilities so the parents owe you untîl you become an adult while a child does not owe the parents. Ad adults, the parents have decades to work, plan , invest and save money for retirements nor birthing more kids or wasting time empty religious activities. This is how it is abroad reason why the richest demograph abroad are the old people who have saved, invested and paid off their homes. We shoùld ́ learn a thing or two from them. |

Sirchiboy:Unfortunately, it's those parents that didn't invest in their kids education et al that sees them as retirement plan e.g Mohbad's father |

FreeIgboho:I get what you're saying, but how do you expect an elderly parent who is receiving no money or assistance to sustain himself or herself? The lack of government assistance or social security benefits for the elderly in Nigeria is another reason why parents look to their children for support. No sane individual, in my opinion, would be happy to see their parents' suffering. In Nigeria, children are responsible for taking care of their parents as they age. It’s not a right but rather a moral thing to do. |

LtChisom:The OP is not talking about taking care physically but more of financial dependence. Many people misunderstood the OP because of the title. The truth is that most of the responsible parents I know have retirement plan. Most have landed properties that they would even leave for their kids. |

This is how you know someone that has dysfunctional parents. If you love your parents you won't be saying this. Even if you are dangote there is no way you won't need assistance and care in your old age. |
