How Do Igbo Men Get Around This Stereotype? by Gideonski(op): 2:13am On Sep 05, 2025
I have heard that Igbo women are usually very expensive to get married to. Like the families of these women are usually known for their outrageous monetary demands either in the form of bride price or "marriage list".
But what I don't understand is if marrying an Igbo lady seems expensive for an outsider, then how do the average Igbo man get married? Do they invest so much money in marrying their wives like someone from another tribe?
Re: How Do Igbo Men Get Around This Stereotype? by Faber(m): 3:47am On Sep 05, 2025
In most part of Igboland there's no separate bride list or bride price for suitors from other tribes... The list is the same for both Igbos and non- Igbos...

As for how men are able to marry their wives, just know that once you're born Igbo male child in Nigeria, your life don become hard from day 1, Nigeria makes it hard, fellow Igbos makes it hard, competition is very high... so you hit the ground running from day 1 inorder to survive, you must work your ass off to succeed

this is just the pure truth. A local village boy in Igboland who has not traveled outside of igboland does not know that getting married elsewhere is not a burden. He knows from day1 that to get married, he must hustle to make that money. This is one of the things youths organisations and the traditional stakeholders should look into, times are fast changing, getting married in igboland should also change.

Rubbish talk, as usual. I have clerks of igbo descents in my office who are married to igbo ladies, and they all live in one room apartments in places like Mararaba, Madala, Deidei, or Karmo, so how did they make millions, spent it to pay dowries, only to suffer in marriages?

Truth is, any young man that is able to complete what is in the list would be able to afford 2 meals a day and also a one bed apartment. Simple truth

Say what you know

In Onitsha my home town, traditional fee for the woman's head is around ₦50 or so. You can only spend on the traditional marriage according to your pocket.

Tradtionally, what will be requested for you to buy and give the girls kindred won't be more than 200k.

You should say Imo state, especially Mbaise

That is why a significant percentage of una go into drugs, baby factory and all other social vice.

Too much importance is placed on wealth and riches in igbo land, that is why you people have so much unhealthy competition amongst yourselves.

So no igbo man that paid bride price is living in abject poverty and in one room face to face?

Is that what you are saying?

You have a point here. I think it depends on where you're marrying from in Igboland because I have seen alot of Igbo couples that don't seem to have much, or are even living in one room. It is not possible for a man to spent millions in marrying an Igbo lady just to end up living in one room with his wife. Most Igbo men wouldn't do that.
Re: How Do Igbo Men Get Around This Stereotype? by Rich4god(m): 8:30am On Sep 05, 2025
The statement that igbo marriages or bride price is expensive is not always true. More than 90 percent of Igbo communities, one can get married there with as little as 100k.

The full list could be expensive, but they are mostly optional.

That's the point.

But some people from south west don't actually understand Igbo, they listens and believe anything they heard about Igbo.

The whole Igbo don't have a single or same tradition on marriage expensies.

Oga l, any traditional marriage done in igboland outside the compound of the bride's father and in the absence of the bride's kingsmen is as invalid as an expired ATM card. If they want let them marry their igbo wives in Jabi or Gwarimpa that marriage is invalid

If you only read about them online and havent come across or know them offline, you would think all of them are billionaires

Not shaming anyone, but people dey my street for Awka then wey dey do humble jobs and dem get families. Its safe to assume they chose to pay millions in bride price and thereafter, decided to use the remaining money to get a one room apartment and then give their wives the rest to start hawking Okpa

Sense!!! cheesy

I can't agree less, what is luxury in some other areas is considered average in Igboland, oppression too much

Well all I know is that an igbo man can never/will never sell his father's house or land to go and marry.

Only Yoruba do that (even though their bride price is the least expensive)

This was unnecessary.

South west that marriage rites are not as expensive, are there no criminals there? Don't we worship money and the wealthy as well? Not everything has to be tribalistic. We all suffer from the same problems; decadence of the society.

Hey bro... The love of money is more pronounced amongst the Igbos. It's kinda part of their culture. This doesn't mean there are no other social vices pronounced amongst other tribe.

When will this misinformation about bride price in Igbo land stop? People should know the difference between bride price and bride list. In most communities, the bride price is been set by the bride's family while the list is set by her Umunna.

When my sister got married the bride price collected by my parents wasn't up to 3k while the list sum total was around 250k.

The love of money is more pronounced among Igbos that's why they hustle in their 2 by 2 shops buying and selling

The love of money is insignificant in the Yoruba land that's why every waking moment there are headless corpses strewn all over their roads and bushes

Isn't Oluwa wonderful 😊

Land in Lagos is very expensive, I believe when they start selling a plot of land in the east from 200m and above then we can judge. Make I know if Igbo man no go sell when he hears 700m
