Yebo yes!!

Growing up I remember the people of my nation crying, fighting & singing songs about LUSAKA.

Many South Africans today have much respect & gratitude for Zambia (Lusaka), because they had our back during our days of sorrow. One hundred percent. Two of my uncles & many others who vowed to fight back the system of the time underwent training in Lusaka...nowhere else.

Popular song during that time..."Siyaya weMkhonto wesizwe eLusaka". Translation- The Spear of the nation is going to Lusaka. QHA! Makes me wanna cry when I think about it. The young & old marching the dusty streets of our townships feeling hopeless. Sigh.

We heard nothing about any of these other countries that are now claiming to have helped us the most. Bah humbug!!

Did you indirectly say that narrative length is the only determinant of a novel or not? grin

I've showed you the basis of a novel and you're still huffing and puffing.
A narrative involves plots, subplots and characterization. But there are different types of narratives and that is where length comes in.

A novel is the biggest form of narrative. The micro flash fiction is the smallest.

The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway is even bigger than Chike and The River, yet, it is still a novella.

You should read up.

I've just few questions for you; grin grin

1) Have you agreed that Nwapa is the mother of modern African literature? If no, debunk it with facts. grin

2) Did you indirectly state that narrative length is the only determinant of a novel? grin

3) Tell us just one sane person who doesn't see C.A.R as a novel.

Nwapa is not the mother of modern literature. Such title doesn't exist in literature. She only got published first. There were African-American writers before her.

Narrative length is the only factor that distinguishes the novel from other familiar form of narratives.

Since I can only tell you that literature scholars don't see C.A.R as a novel, maybe you should tell me any sane person who sees it as a novel.

Flora Nwapa is not the mother of modern African literature. Aidoo of Ghana wrote the first book that told a story from the viewpoint of women. Unfortunately, it was a play she wrote in 1965. Stop running from pillar to post.

Nwapa wrote her first prose "Efuru" in 1966 and got internationally published, making her the first African woman to write a novel that was published in English language.

Aidoo wrote her first literal work in 1965 and didn't get published. Its obvious she wrote for herself alone. grin

Now contrast and compare.

Anyone with sense will know that I have been calm while you have been the one running around. Your smiley do not cover your insecurity on this matter.

As a writer then, it was easier to get published then than now when we don't have a lot of traditional publishing outfits willing to take risk on new books.

Plays hardly get published in the same year. Most playwrights then were more concerned with performing their plays in as many theatres as possible rather than publishing them.

This is the definition of a novel, from Wikipedia;
A novel is a long narrative, normally in prose, which describes fictional characters and events, usually in the form of a sequential story.

But according to haifia(sic), a narrative can be called a novel only when it's lengthy. grin grin grin

OK, tell us what you know about a novel beyond the surface definition given by Wikipedia. I mean what you feel a novel is.

And you should (for your own good) ask Wiki to define a NOVELLA, SHORT STORY and SHORT FICTION and post your findings here (if you have the time)

LOL, some of them even claim to have given us food during Apartheid. Do you remember your family receiving food parcels during Apartheid because I don't. Our mothers & fathers faced humiliation daily from their employers just to put food on the table.

I remember visiting my mother's work place & she strictly instructed me not to sit at the white people's chairs or use their cutlery. She had her own spoon, cup & plate, stored away in tool shed outside of the main house. I was very young then, so I forgot about the not sitting on the chairs part & the white woman kept pushing me off the sofa.

We, the South Africans are the ones who faced humiliation & terror daily, therefore we do not owe anybody a fvcking thing.

Whose mothers & fathers were being tortured over nothing? Who lived through that? Who PHYSICALLY had to fight back? US.

We grew up throwing bricks at the sight of military vehicles such as "Hippos" & "Mellow Yellows". No real childhoods. We grew up seeing our mothers & father stripped down and whipped with AK 47s. Young children being belted left, right & centre by the Apartheid police in my hometown.

And now people expect us to be all "normal" & kumbaya.

South Africans have no time to hate or envy ANY nation, the focus is on ourselves. We are still healing. We are too self-absorbed to pay attention to other African nations. Anybody who believes otherwise is delusional at best or is projecting their own hate on us.

We simply don't give a damn. No envy or hate. Nada. Busy licking old wounds. End of story.
