dejia: @ Ijobarun: Are you sure it is rice bran or Rice husk? there is a huge diff btwn the 2; i noticed most people call Rice husk, Rice bran; confirm and be sure..

I use Rice husk, about 10percent of it my feed, just as fillers; please dont use it for weaners or growers.

does it not affect your piglets, as in causing loose stool?
Pls what and what drugs can I use to stop loose stool on my weaners? Tnx

You should get be getting enough buyers from Uso, owo, and Oka, oba, Akungba, Ikare Akoko area (mind you, most christian living in Akoko municipalities consume pork). What is there is that, you should do your market survey to be sure before starting because I only know of Akure.

The problem now is that, most pig farmers cannot raise their animals in residential areas like before. They have to move to remote areas. I wonder why they should, because it is possible to operate a pig farm around residential areas without polluting the environment, and even generate extra income.

You can easily breed maggot using pig dung while the liquid waste is channeled into a sewage pit. (always avoid using more water when cleaning).I always advise farmer to use the residual water in the watering trough and wallowing pit for cleaning the pens. Sprinkle disinfectant solution on the floor after cleaning .
One secret that most people and farmers don't know about pigs is that, pigs are one of the neatest if not the neatest animals in the world. You can carry out this experiment:
1. Construct pens that are spacious enough and avoid overcrowding
2. Construct the feed and water trough in the same place, and make use of shower system to cool pigs' body.
3. Now observe the pigs every day; you will notice that, they will never urinate and excrete in the place they feed or take water. They will move to a corner distant from where they feed and take water, to do these.

It is what I know and I'll surely stand on my ground about this fact.
So, it is the design of the pens that has made your pigs to behave or look dirty.

NB: What you give your pigs will determine if you will get enough meat or more than enough fat (many people including me don't like taking animal fat). If you delight in giving PKC, cassava peels, kitchen waste, and junks to pigs, they will convert them to enough body fat with poor growth performance. It is better you get a good feed formula to prepare a good concentrate for them. With a good pig breeds (even if it is not pure breed) such as Duroc, Landrace, Poland China etc. you will surely get a good result.

You can read this article on Pig farming http://www.livestocking.com/2013/08/facts-about-pig-farming.html
please I want to venture into piggery, but from what I've read its advisable to start small. My question is how exactly is small, what expenses should I be looking at as regards how many pigs should I buy then I have a land far away from where I stay, its a challenge for me because of security reasons. Can I get a small place close to my place before going large scale?

How many weaners do u need? I have large white.
Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by ops(m): 8:56am On Oct 12, 2014
@ Eazeefix.
Personally, I only keep sows that that give minimum of 10 live births each farrowing.
But I think this should vary according to breed.
Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by eazeefix: 11:52am On Oct 12, 2014
10 is good very good in fact but I am aiming for 12-14 supported with creep feeding to maximize weaning weight

Yea, it appears easy enough. Where is your farm? Mayb we can rub minds practically on this A.I thing when the time comes.
Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by ops(m): 9:38am On Oct 15, 2014
Btw, Eazeefix, do you have any landrace boar for sale? In the region of 60-70kg.
I kept one from the last set I sold only to discover he has just one testicle. I see peppersoup in his future. wink

None for now. My first mating of the landrance was to my large white boar to produce my F1 hybrid gilts which will eventually be my sow line. Sometimes next year I will do pure breeding to keep and sell to those interested. My farm is at Ijebu ode.
Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by ops(m): 7:56am On Oct 16, 2014
Ok. Ijebu ode is kinda far. Almost the same thing with obj's farm when I factor in transport costs.

Do u use farrowing crates? Or how do u prevent ur sow from eating d creep feed & d ensuing bouts of diarrhea?
Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by eazeefix: 11:14am On Oct 16, 2014
Haven't deployed crates and creep feeding relying on natural mothering instincts. Will deploy them by mid next year. Loose stools is minimal probably becos I use probiotics in my feed.
Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by ops(m): 8:55pm On Oct 16, 2014
I use bakers' yeast as well, but both sows still had diarrhea so I just stopped the creep feeding.
What probiotic do u use?
