If they know what to do, this is one of the best times to make money on the NSE.

Flexibility of thought is key.

I try to reduce philosophy in times like this. I'm being honest. But I won't be apologetic about what Charles Darwin wrote below:

"In the struggle for SURVIVAL, the fittest WIN out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in ADAPTING themselves BEST to their environment."

Emmm...an interesting set of folks are also exploiting the art of adapting the environment to themselves.

Very correct but many of them will not be able to do so as they are currently and hugely trapped.

I am not trying to create any panic but then what if this persists and your portfolio goes red further? Remember there's a reason why stop losses exist to "cut your losses short and let your winners run". http://www.investopedia.com/articles/stocks/08/capital-losses.asp
"Often you just have to bite the bullet and sell your stock at a loss before those losses get bigger. The first thing to understand is that hope is not a strategy. An investor has to have a logical reason to hold a losing position. The second point is, what you paid for a stock is irrelevant to its future direction."

Above quote is from the link above. Folks hold on to losing positions because others embolden them with messages of goodwill and encouragement, reassuring them it is only a paper loss grin. Biko, set a stop loss at or about the daily maximum a stock can gain on the NSE. Chikena.

The Nigerian mentality and factor will always set in thereby hindering people from applying this rule. Everybody wants to win everytime but nobody wants to loose for once.

I rememeber the 2008 experience when prices were falling, we kept on holding (either due to greed or not being able to accept the huge losses) until it crashed totally.

However, people shouldnt panick so much as the market is likely to get a breather and recover soon.

PS: Abeg do your own Due diligence.

Hi everyone, I bought Firstbank shares worth a little bit over 500k at NGN33/unit when it went public in 2007 with the aim of leaving it long term, I really don't know much about stocks just that the fund was idle at that time, hence the motive to invest in shares. Most times I even forget I've got some shares somewhere. I just checked on NSE and FBN shares is 11.30 If I'm right? Does that mean I'm at loss? What are my chances of making profit in the long term considering the fact that I bought the shares 7 years ago.

You have not lost unless you sell, if I were you, I would buy more. Also chase down your dividends and bonus over the years.

Sir, Morgan charges you only 0.25% brokerage fees. The NSE and SEC charge everything else.
It was a mistake. I mean #4.20 for trade alert instead of #4
I was told some couple of mins ago dat dey av started charging VAT on sms alert.
Although, the moni is small but one must be able to understand every kobo being charged.

...The index has shown a strong bearish momentum in the last trading month. Evidently, the downtrend is expected to continue in the new trading month with 37,108.30 basis point key support to watch. A breach in this support level would drive the index more downward. On the other hand a breach above significant resistance 39,152.10 basis point would bring optimism in the stock market.

Conclusion:
The Nigerian Equity market remains not attractive as the bearish momentum is expected to continue in the nearest future

Long term: Bearish
Medium term: Bearish
Short term: Bearish

You seem to be the type that pays attention to detail. Good for you. But I hope you are not the type that would, in a bid to avert the N65 charge on the 4th withdraw on another bank ATM in a month, break your trips (if commuting by public transport) or drive long distances just to use your bank's ATM machine? Thereby spending more than the N65 on transportation. Lolz

I can't sense a real advice from a sarcasm, like I said before I'm an absolute novice dealing with stocks and a dormant trader at that, well thank you if it's a genuine advice but if it's not, you shouldn't have replied at all

Heya! Sorry ehn. I hope there is no need for which you intend to recall the funds now? It has been 7yrs of famine bro. You also checked at the peak of a bearish season (hopefully). Perharps another 7yrs of plenty is ahead. My advice is to recover your dividends over these yrs and reinvest them. Check back when there is so much noise n excitement in the stock market. You may choose to sell then.
Btw, FBN at N33/share PO was corporate monkey hunting things.

I really do not understand this "paper loss" thing. The Ogbeni bought FBNH at N33 about 7 years ago. It is below N12 now. When will it be a loss? If he asked when it was N28, or last November when FBNH was N17, or last Sept when it was N15, I am sure you would have said the same thing. I do not see the capitalisation of FBNH at N1 trillion anytime soon, so chances he will get back his N33 per share will not be anytime soon (assuming the bonus and dividends will be counted as profit over the 7 year period). Honestly, I am not being sarcastic, I just want to understand this school of thought that believes you have not lost till you sell. It negates the idea of stop losses, and allows a small loss to grow into a huge one.
