Yes, Aba needs all the help it can get. But despite the negligence meted against it by this current administration, it's still one of the few Nigeria cities that can boast of few good places (like Owerri, Enugu, Ph, Uyo, lagos, kaduna, jos and so).

I normally laugh whenever i hear people say that Aba is the worst city in Nigeria. In as much as there is much negligence meted against it, it still retains some of it's pride. In Southeast, Aba might be the 3rd or 4th finest city.

The contest of the 3rd or 4th position is between it and Umuahia, which I'll give Aba 3rd because it has all the qualities of international city. And it can stand alone as a country just like Singapore and Honkong without sourcing for help from any nearby country.

Most people who criticise Aba do so based on what they see on internet, Aba is not bad and most of it's major roads are swept on daily basis. Even the popular Ikot Ekpene road, the only bad portion is at the boundary axis between Obingwa(Abia) and Essien Udim(Akwa Ibom) and has received little attention this xmas.
But people has badmouth the road as if all parts of the road is in a deplorable state.
Aba is not bad and dirty as people portray on internet, lets not kid ourselves bro.

Asa road, Aba/owerri road, Umungasi rd, Okigwe rd, brass rd, factory rd, brass str, ikot ekpene rd etc has no problem whenever it rains.

But you see Faulks rd, Osusu rd, Omuma rd, Umule rd, Umuode rd and Umuocham rd, even cemetery rd, hmmm whenever it rains bro you can use canoe to ply on the roads if you wish especially Faulks rd.

Aba, the commercial nerve-centre of Abia State, bore for some time the unenviable tag of the dirtiest city in Nigeria. The reason for this was not far to seek. This city which is renowned for its manufacturing and commercial activities was plagued by the problems of insecurity, environmental disorder, poor electricity supply, etc.

The people of Aba, and indeed the entire Abia State citizenry, must have been seriously embarrassed when the Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ndozi Okonjo-Iweala in a lecture organised and attended by the Governor of Abia State, Theodore Orji, described Aba as very dirty.

Many visitors have also been quoted as saying that the city stank horribly, just as they criticised its bad road networks. For instance, an English woman had in a Youtube documentary written thus: “I have been to Aba. It is very dirty, (with lots of)mosquitoes. Too bad …”.

That was last year when whole roads and streets were blocked by mountains of refuse, with erosion and flood causing a lot of havoc. On Ngwa Road, by Ohanku; Asa Road by Michael’s; Asa Road by Milverton, Dear John Junction by 7UP, Ogbor Hill; Ngwa Road by Asa, Obohia Road, off Ngwa Road, Port-Harcourt Road, Jubilee to Hospital roads, heaps of refuse blocked the drainage system with the gutters oozed offensive odour.

Most disposal points had no buckets. Refuse was dropped along the roads, soiling the city and blocking free flow of traffic and causing accidents. In places like Ngwa Road by Ohanku, traders sat on the refuse with their wares.

For the people of Aba, in spite of the double taxation collected by the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA, the agency failed woefully in its responsibility.

This was Aba before Governor Theodore Orji appointed Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu Deputy General Manager of ASEPA. His main task, Orji told him, was to keep Aba clean on a sustainable basis. It was a challenge Dr Ikpeazu accepted by assuring the people that he would transform Aba to one of the neatest cities in the country.

And some months after, Aba residents who were most critical of the return of filth to the city after the former General Manager of ASEPA, Mr Cosmos Ndukwe, became Chief of Staff, are now singing a different tune. According them, the city is now wearing a new, decent look, thanks to the new helms man at ASEPA.

Dr Ikpeazu is a former head of Head of Department of Applied Chemistry, Enugu State University of Technology, a biochemist whose main focus is biochemical toxicology and is also reputed to have carried out researches in environmental sciences.

Before his current appointment, Ikpeazu was Special Adviser on Environment and Sanitation to Orji and was also the General Manager of the Abia State Passengers Integrated Manifest and Safety Scheme, ASPIMS.

Getting set for the job

To prepare the ground for success, the new ASEPA boss was said to have tried to endear himself to the people by showing active interest in sports, schools, markets and communal engagements. He established ASEPA Clubs in schools and enforced the Governor’s suspension of tax on disposal of wastes.

Ikpeazu inherited two functional trucks in Aba – one roll-off truck and one compactor. He repaired three more roll-off trucks and increased the number of compactors to six. He also commissioned an engineer to provide more buckets to make up for the shortfall for the 62 places being served by only 18 buckets.

Indiscriminate disposal of refuse

According to his aide, Mr. Enyinnaya E. Appolos, when Ikpeazu met with the people of Aba, he had lamented the indiscriminate disposal of refuse by residents, noting that such actions frustrated his agency from keeping Aba clean.

He also urged neighbouring states to stop smuggling refuse into Aba, warning that offenders would be charged to court to serve as deterrent to others. ASEPA also kept surveillance on the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway to stop residents from dumping refuse on the express road.

With the support of the Governor, Ikpeazu was said to have bought buckets, roller trucks and engaged enough staff. He was also advised by the Governor to carry out most of his evacuations at night.

ASEPA has about 57 buckets or giant-size waste bins. From Abia Polytechnic to Ngwa Road, there are over five buckets for people to dump their refuse. People are allowed to throw their refuse into the buckets from 5 am till night. Where there is no bucket, staff are stationed to reclaim the waste thrown into heaps, Appollos said.

When the buckets are full, the roll-off trucks, four in number, take them to a place in Ihie on Port Harcourt Road at night where the refuse is dumped.

“We monitor the exercise. His office is at the Ministry of Works, Aba. A member of Adventist Church, he goes to work from the church on Saturdays. The state funds the agency, so ASEPA does not charge individuals to dispose their refuse. Abia stopped collection of refuse charges till further notice. The state is the sole financier,” the aide informed.

In the morning, minders clean up the dump sites and cover the buckets. Each day in Aba, 70 buckets of refuse are evacuated while the staff who clean the streets follow it up by cleaning the streets. If the refuse is not cleaned for a day, there will be environmental crisis in Aba.

On account of this, the heaps of refuse in the streets have disappeared. Ehi Road, once a mountain of waste, is now motorable. The Ministry of Environment is draining Ikot Ekpene Road. It is also cleaning up gutters and trucks dispose the waste.

“Ikpeazu believes that if you get Aba right, it will serve the East and the entire Eastern region. Aba’s success should be part of the people’s passion,” Apollos went on.

Need for Federal presence

To many Aba residents, Aba has been neglected by the federal government. Aba residents told VM that the city needs a power plant. “There is no federal presence, only police and prisons. We want Aba well positioned to enable it to provide services the people need.

Aba is a market but it produces what it sells. People come from Central Africa, West Africa, etc, to Aba. Aba needs federal attention. The South East government should also think of Aba. So, the Federal Government should help Aba to become the Taiwan of Africa. Rate of activities in Aba is high. It is not just about trading, “Ikpeazu’s said.

But the agency needs more buckets and trucks. “The population of Aba is exploding due to activities of Boko Haram in the North which has forced more people to settle in the city, thereby increasing its environmental problem. Ikpeazu is interpreting the vision of Orji on waste disposal. He brought in Dr. Ikpeazu because he knows he can interpret his vision.”

wow! is that Aba? why all this bed mouth about ABA being dirt or slum? i presume they haven't been to Aba. not as bad as they painted it. can't even believe they have that spacious and wide dual carriage like this one..... Onitsha doesn't even have single dual carriage road apart from Fed Govrt high ways Asaba/enugu rd. the inner hoods are worst then what am seeing here.. too narrow like a path way, no pedestrian side walk and always drag road with motorist. Onitsha is little bit better only at upper iweka the rest are in sorry state. even the work I saw was so shabby and rough with no finishing no thanks to IDC.... hope to visit this city soon....

The paramount aim of what I'm doing here today is to prove some people wrong based on their wrong perception about Aba, but in actual sense Aba still needs some attentions from state and federal govt.

Aba is not dirty and cannot be, just that it's having a drainage problem which is affecting some of it's roads that are far from river.

Then coming to Aba and Onitsha which i would not want to comment on, so as to not to derail this wonderful thread from my Anambra brothers, Aba is better, well planned, landscaped, neater and finer than Onitsha due to the attention it received from the colonial govt in 1921, filgerow after civil war, Mbakwe and Orji Uzor kalu.

The problem with we Abians is that we thought that the only way to get more from govt is to criticize but TA Orji govt has taught us that it's not the ultimate. The more we criticise his govt the more he neglect us.

Aba is the 4th finest city in Igboland just that Osisioma and Ugwunagbo lgas part of the city are not doing well like other lgas who are sweeping their roads on daily basis.

I've said it on countless Occasions that Abia and Imo are the most developed states in Igboland in the sense that all the parts of the states are developed. In Abia, all the parts are developed and civilised starting from Bende and Umunneochi to Ukwa east and west, Umuahia to Ikwuano, Osisioma to Obingwa.

Beside flood problem should be corrected by federal govt, so the flood problem of some part of Aba city should be blamed on Goodluck Jonathan. The 1st drainage that was done in Aba and Umuahia was done by shagari govt.

Flood, erosion, earthquake, oil spilage and other natural disaster are meant to be tackled by the federal govt.

One of the legacy projects which the Abia State Government wants to bequeath to the state before it leaves office on May 29, next year is an airport. In fact, speak­ing through his Special Adviser on Pub­lic Communication, Mr Ben Onyechere, the governor reiterated the commitment of his administration to build an airport in the state. The essence, government pos­ited, was that considering the location of Aba, as the eastern commercial pride, it will boost investment in the state thereby turning around the economy of the state. It does not matter that the Sam Mbakwe Air­port, Owerri is some kilometres away just as the Port Harcourt Airport.

In a statement, he said: “It has become im­perative that an airport should be sited in Abia State, considering its location as the commer­cial and industrial nerve centre of the South East. I’m convinced beyond doubt that busi­ness and tourism potentials of the state will be enhanced greatly, as much as it will attract more opportunities to grow existing facilities in the state.

“There is equally no doubt that there will be an influx of employment that will im­mensely generate developmental initiatives, if this onerous project is realized.”

He added: “However, the state is faced with numerous contending challenges but in spite of that, I am resolute in my determina­tion to build an airport which will comple­ment all other efforts we have made to bring the state at par with its contemporaries.

“An average Abia man is commerce-ori­ented, most of whose businesses are scattered all over the world, and as such the need for this project has become overwhelming as much as it has become necessary to avail re­turning Abians to a one-stop trip.”

Mr James Kwubiri Okpara, Abia State Commissioner for Special Services, also stat­ed that there was no going back on the project. He told a newspaper: “By the grace of God, I am the secretary of the airport committee and we have said it several times that we are committed to giving an airport to the people of Abia State. The avalanche of expressions of interest by the people of Abia shows that this is a project they all need and yearn for. In this matter too, contractors have been given a fair chance to bid for the work. We have both Nigerian and Chinese companies bidding for it. We also have an Irish company who wants to partner the Abia State government to en­sure that this becomes a reality. It is unusual because they come to approach you and not you going to approach them.

“This tells you that people outside realise what government is doing to better the lot of the people. If, for instance, they do not have confidence in government, they will not come forward to be involved in this airport project.”

Justifying the desirability and viability of the airport, he explained: “The people of Abia State have asked for an airport and we are bent on providing one for them. The request made by Abia people for an airport is indeed overwhelming. The volume of passenger traf­fic from Owerri Airport to Abuja and Lagos shows that the people of Abia State constitute the majority. The people of Abia State trav­elling from here to outside the country on a daily basis are overwhelming.

I want to engage you on some issues, but I need to know whether you are Okezie, his representative or just someone who supports him and with a good knowledge of his visions for Abia, but before we take this further, if he cannot accept that Orji had 8 years to correct those things you blame OUK for, how are we sure that we would not be going round in circles in 4 years time still blaming OUK?
