SS and SE leading like always. No surprise there.

Big ups to SE and big ups to delta.

While the "sophisticated" tribe claim "development", "most educated", etc online and on paper. You guys actually achieve it in real life. Big ups.

Unlike some people that think political handouts is achievement, you guys continue showing individual achievement is the true definition of development. Big ups.

My SS and SE Bros never stop. Continue helping out your community, even the little you got can educate the smallest child in your town. Ignore the "sophisticated" ppl and their wahalla.

Maybe you might want to reread the article again. Nowhere in that article did it state that SW top in infant and child mortality rate. Albeit SE had a slight higher number in children that died before age 1 (and that's 1 out of every 10000 birth) but every other sectors in that section such as measles immunization, maternity mortality rate, antiprenatal coverage, etc SW lacked behind other southern region.
The only thing SW ranked highest in is water sanitation and children under 5 mortality rate. Every sectors (excluding two) discussed in that article, be it educational or human development, SW ranked the least in comparison to other southern region

I went ahead to read the whole PDF file and there are some things wrong with this survey
1) Their survey sample size is very small compared to the whole of Nigeria population
SAMPLE SIZE:
A total of Ninety (90) EAs and Nine Hundred and Sixty (960) households were covered per state and FCT, Abuja. At the national level, a total of Two Thousand, Nine Hundred and Sixty (2,960) Enumeration Areas (EAs) and Thirty Five Thousand, Five Hundred and Twenty (35,520) households (HHs) were covered.

2)The methods used leave room for very significant error
SURVEY INSTRUMENTS:
The survey instruments used were: MDG questionnaire, household listing form, instruction manual, EA line maps and selection sheets. In addition to the survey instruments were the following equipment required to be used for measurement; mother and child scale (for weights), and measuring board (for heights).

DATA COLLECTION TECHNIQUE:
Personal Interview method was used to collect information from eligible respondents in the households, with the aid of the prescribed format (Questionnaire). In addition, physical measurement of the weight and height of the children under age 5 years was taken and recorded in the appropriate schedule.

Their method is faulty because their sample size is insignificant compared to the whole of Nigeria's population, also they questioned people to get their result, this is faulty because we all know humans are prone to lying. I see this as the Nigerian government giving itself a giant Mouth Gig that does not translate to the reality of Nigeria. For this kind of study to be practical atleast 50% of the Nigerian population should be involved and error should be below 5%. This result is rubbish because the claims are not verifiable. Instead of us to just eat up the stuff thrown at us, let us ask the right questions and have meaningful discussions, instead of each ethnic group claiming pseudo-victory.

SE didn't just have a slight higher number in infant mortality, rather it had the 2nd worst infant mortality rate in the entire country.
Worse than the War ravaged born throway NE.
And to me that's very disturbing and it says a lot about basic healthcare in that region.
SW that u guys had been pounding since morning didn't record such position in any of the indices.
And sir go back and read the report beyond education indices.
SW also had the highest record of children sleeping under ITN.
and came second in ANC visit, measles immunisation, skilled attendant delivery etc
Overall SW came top in overall health indices.
Ur statement that SW performed worse in the southern region is fallacious.
And its not all about SE
NC top the list in HIV awareness.

Are you minding them? A real statistician and researcher will be suspicious of these figures.

How can any group claim a literacy rate of above 90% when we have villages in Nigeria? When we have a high poverty rate?

What was the method of data collection?

literacy is ordinary reading an writing. Is it that difficult to believe that every 9/10 individuals in a region can read and write?

GOAL 2: ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION

Target 2A: Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.

Indicator 2.1: Net enrolment in primary education.

In 2014, The states with very high attendance ratios included Anambra (94%), Delta (92.80), Imo (90.7), Lagos (92), Ondo (92.4), Osun (91.6), Edo (91.0), Ekiti (93.6) and FTC (94.1) while the least were Bauchi (29.9), Sokoto (24.80), Yobe (23.7), Zamfara (37.80).

At the national level, the net attendance ratio was 61% in 2008 and it increased to 71% in 2012. In 2014, there was a shortfall of 2.3% and the net attendance for 2014 thus dropped to 68.7%. When classified by sectors, net attendance in the urban (84.3%) was much higher than in the rural areas (62.2%). Across the geopolitical zones, it was very encouraging in the South East (90.5%), South South (88.1%), South West (87%) and North Central (80.2%). But in the North West (50.5%) and particularly North East (42.5%) net attendance was not impressive.
Although 100% attendance is expected, the result shows that Nigeria is on track.

Indicator 2.2: Primay Six Completion Rate

Nationally completion rate according to fig. 2.2 in 2004 was 82%. It increased to 87.7% in 2012 and dropped to 74.0 in 2014. Within the 2014, the completion rate was higher in the urban (84.4%) when compared with the rural (69.7). In the zones, completion rate was highest in South East (98.7%) zone, followed by South West (94.1%). Primary six completion rate was poorest in the North East (49.5%) zone. Nigeria is also on track.

Indicator 2.3: Literacy rate of 15 – 24 years, women

The literacy rate of youth women between 2004 and 2014 at the national level increased from 60.4% in 2004 to 80% in 2008. In 2012, it declined to 66%. Although it slightly appreciated in 2014 (66.7%), but that is insignificant. At the state level, literacy of youth women aged 15 – 24 was very encouraging in states like Rivers (98%), Enugu (97%), Imo (95%), Akwa Ibom (95%), Delta (94.1%), Anambra (93%), Ekiti (92.7%), Abia (91.3%). Conversely, literacy rate among woman of age 15 – 24 was poor in Sokoto (10.7%), Bauchi (13%), Yobe (16%) etc.

Sectorally, the survey showed that there were more literate youth women (85.3%) in the urban as against the 57.8% recorded in the rural areas. In the zones the literate youth women in the South East (93.5%) were much higher than the rest of the zones. North East (33.0%) and North West (35%) had the lowest percentage of literate youth women in 2014.

GOAL 3: PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN

Target 3.A: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education preferably by 2005, and at all levels of education no later than 2015.

Indictor 3.1: Ratio of girls to boys in Primary and Secondary education

Nationally, the gender parity in the primary school in 2008 was 0.9. The interpretation is that in every 9 girls in primary school in 2008, there were 10 boys. It increased to 1.0 in 2012 implying 10 girls in every 10 boys. The parity index increased to 1.02 in 2014. The rural (1.01) and urban (1.01) were equal. The GDIs across the zones were exceedingly encouraging. In the secondary schools in 2012, the gender parity index was 1.02. The decline to 1.01 in 2014 was insignificant. There were no disparity in both the rural (1.0) and urban (90.98) in 2012. Nigeria has already achieved gender parity index as illustrated in fig 3.1a, being a chart of gender parity in both primary and secondary schools distributed by state in 2014.

I think healthy competition among the 6 Geo political Zones without biterness is highly welcomed. we experienced that during the first republic.

However, there are somethings i want to point out from the MDG Goals attained by one of the South East Zone which is Abia State. Pls don't see this my humble observations or opinons as tribal hatred against any tribe but as stakeholder concern about few things noticed in MDG Goals.

First and foremost i will like to start with Target 2A and indicator 2:1 under Goal 2: ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL EDUCATION.

Ensure that, by 2015 all children everywhere both boys and girls will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.

Indicator 2:1 however abbreviated 90.5% to the South east without indicating the ratio of other 3 easthern states (Abia, Ebonyi and Enugu) which doubtfully will not sum up to that ratio if Abia state is/was truely considered, although, the ratio of 94% and 90.7% ascibed to Anambra and Imo respectively are justifiable if not exaggerrated.

Moreover, Abia state with population of about 2.4 million and Aba the biggest and most populated city with an approximately population of 1.3 million and Umuahia the capital with population of 349,000 thousand has not and can't ensure that all Abian children complete a full course in primary schooling with the way Government is handling education in the state.

How do you acheive these MDG Goals with these factors;

1, Non payment of teachers salaries and allowance for over 7 - 8 months
2, dilapidated school structures( some resently renoved after 16 years)
3 out of the120,000 shoe makers 98% has no primary education
4, Out of the over 90 primary schools 90% are privately owned( few are very good but not affordable)
5, Culture of doing business( why go to school if i can't secure a job)
6, frequent strikes
7, Rate of child birth is atleat 5 children - 1 family( no provision for construction of new schools)

These major factors are affecting primary schooling in Abia State. Now, looking at these factors Abia state can't sum up to the ratio of 50%.

Indicator 2:2
Completion rate is 40% in Abia state. most of the boys drop out from school. that has reduced the south east ratio.

Indicator 2:3
I will agree on this because majority of girls go to school here even up to secondary schooling level.

I suspect somebody is trying to play on our intelligence hence i wrote my submissions.thanks

shalom

I don't think it's just the elites that are responsible for the poor rate of development in the north, there appears to be amongst them a culture that shuns the objectives of the MDG because it is perceived to be a Western thing. Many northerners continue to see the west as evil and so resist, even to their detriment, these urgings to improve themselves.

This is just my opinion, I may be wrong about it though.

A medical study was carriedout to evaluate the incidence of peptic ulcer in Northern, southwest and Southeast part of Nigeria caused by helicobacter pylori which transmission depends on the standard of living of a particular region.
