I know many people from there who will just accept to be called that maybe because they did not grow up there or they just can't be bothered with any aguement. But I think you're correct about the different spellings because they tend to use the E alphabet in place of A. When she talks to her sister in their language, I can't understand a word she says but she understand every word of Igbo I speak and speaks better than me even though I'm very good at speaking and writing Igbo.
I just assumed theirs was a harder dialect.

I understand every word of Igbo and speak too but all my friends that are Igbo do not understand any word I speak let alone speak. We bear similar Igbo names but maybe spelt differently. Some bear names similar to bini names too and some of my friends surname sounds Bini though mine sounds Igbo. My name sounds Igbo too. Anyway, at the end of the day, we are all Nigerians.
