There is an equipment called oxygen concentrator- it runs on electricity.
/
Hospitals in Nigeria do not use oxygen concentrators.

Medical practitioners do not like to invest in medical equipment. They will rather set up a clinic as general practitioners. The primary aim is profit and not quality healthcare.

That's all.

Do oxygen cylinders now run on electricity??

Yes, if piped through. Oxygen cylinders are standalone, and do not need electricity.

Visit private hospitals in Nigeria and you would see oxygen concentrators in use.

Even if piped, there are still standby tanks.

We know there are many possibilities. But tailor your response to hospitals in Nigeria.

thanks for showing u not a Nigerian.
in our course of argument let limit ourselves to the frame.
budget being approved of late has no correlation with the hospital management coz these are parastatal of govt dt generate money daily which could deployed some to manage his priority. n regarding the power supply we admit our short come n voted new govt. can u please tell me ur country to evaluate with ours?

Well first of all I hold a Nigerian passport...

Second I live in this country.

Third....hospitals should be relying on NPEA. That they have to rely on generators is because we lazy Nigerians prefer generators to PHCN light....which should not be.

Fourth....our hospitals are badly funded. I should know....I am a doctor. We do not have much of the necessary equipment to do diagnostic tests. And we don't even have enough doctors, nurses, or even specialist doctors.

You cannot expect much from a country whose health budget is low...and who won't fix the lights. (It is like expecting Usain Bolt to run 100 meters....after fasting dry fast for a week beforehand).

And BTW.....do you know that that same hospital could save millions if PHCN/DISCO was working well? Think about that!(But no....generators are fine....let's ignore the fact that a big nation like Nigeria cannot generate 1/4 of its electricity needs. No....I am all right, even if I wear just one trouser alone everyday...don't need them shirts...).

In my opinion....you want your hospitals to improve.....fix the power supply, fix the staff supply....and most importantly...fix the financial supply. That is why we had it hard going fighting Ebola over here.

Name them.

The death didn't occur in a private hospital. So you know.

Would you go to a hospital that tells you that oxygen concentrator is their only source of oxygen?

Save me.

In UCH, I've seen lots of people on oxygen cylinders, and it has absolutely nothing to do with whether there's power or not. Oxygen will still be supplied to the woman regardless.

Unless they are using some technique I've never heard of, then I don't know what the OP is talking about. And remember that we are talking about Nigeria, so the chance that something else is involved, like oxygen concentrators, seems a little bit of a small chance to me. It's a general Hospital.

I forgot fuel shortages was a recent phenomenon, damn! how come I forgot?

This only started when GEJ took over, this wouldn't have happened in the past, this my memory thing sha!!.

Now, I truly believe that Nigerians have short memories. Fuel scarcity was at its worst during Obasanjo's time. We can count how many times we have had scarcirty on our hands during GEJs tenure.

There is no excuse in this world why a patient would die in a hospital from hypoxic-related incident even if the patient presents with a restrictive disorder. The nonchalant attitude of healthcare workers kills more than illness. Or are you telling me that nobody is in-charge of Oxygen therapy in this hospital?

having an oxygen tank and life supporting system are two different things

an oxygen tank can work without electricity

It must be an Oxygen concentrator. I've witness such before. 2 terminal patients were lost within 15 mins. The 3rd was already even gasping before a mini generator was quickly powered
so ur hospital uses oxygen concentrator for someone in critical situation . u and ur hospital members needs refreshers course. pls.

The easiest way to understanding an issue at stake is to call for an expert opinion. So far nobody has done that. What I found, going through this thread, are explanations that are half near the reason for this calamity(assuming the story itself is true).
Re: Sad: Woman Placed On Oxygen At General Hospital Dies After Nepa Took Light by CaptainJune: 5:54pm On May 10, 2015
All I see is gross negligence on the part of the hospital staff and the family of the deceased should sue them under torts for damages. It may not bring the dead back but it will prevent another victim from suffering the same fate.

Am sure the deceased was not scuba diving. So she was probably on a respirator, which uses electricity.

someone dies in a lagos hospital, GEJ gets the blame..

A rat dies in their home and the news hit the internet, GEJ get stoned again.. undecided

When will some lame people get to learn objective criticism?

If a hospital fails to meet up with its crucial obligations, how does that become fashola's problem let alone GEJ? Don't they have an operations manager? Or is their medical service free of Charge?

The fact that there's fuel scarcity isn't enough excuse when medical workers are driven by passion to save lives.
Nigerian hospitals should learn to take responsibility just like First Consultant Hospital in Obalende didn't wait for Fashola b4 it took responsibility for holding down the Ebola carrier

RIP to the Soul of the late woman.

The family of the late woman should sue the hospital for neligence of duty; they should seek at least, a billion naira as compensation.
The hospital should in turn sue their power provider for the same sum.

There is no correlation between "light" and oxygen delivery.

The patient was probably on E or H tank and they are not powered by anything. Nigerian hospitals don't use oxygen concentrators.

So they should investigate what else caused the death.

That's all

Lagos state owned hospitals do use oxygen concentrators. Though its abt 1or 2 in the emergency wards.
Most probably the hospital had no fuel to power their standby gen due to the scarcity. The mgt of the hospital should have ensured 24hr power supply, they should have turned themselves to fuel if there's no fuel to buy. Other patients may probably have being on the oxygen cylinders. Maybe the concentrators should be abandoned for now due to the erratic power supply, but that would still deprive those that it could benefit when there's power.

That still doesn't explain it.

Nigeria is not ripe for any life support/saving equipment that is wholly dependent on electricity especially without backup plans.

If the patient was in a critical condition, the healthcare workers should have made alternative provisions for oxygen, that is assuming they care.

No, compressed oxygen cylinders and canisters don't need electricity to dispense 02.
But oxygen concentrators do require some power to convert room air in the presence of water to pure oxygen for regulated dispensation.
Hospitals should be equipped with portable mobile units to use in case of emergencies.
They should be sued for malpractice. Homicidal manslaughter due to negligence.
