Pls house which symptoms of disease is an active bird in previous day suddenly turn lame? the toes look somehow twisted, shivering while trying to stand up, abandoned feed and sudden death. Five weeks bird.
..
Heat, newcastle disease, vitamin defficiency etc can all cause that. If u have many birds u shud consider going for lab test. Do u formulate ur own feed?

Hi people is it adviceable to start a farm in a land like this I just acquired (2plots), with pple living around.
You can , but the disadvantages outweigh the advantage
1. you'll be forced to move out by ur neighbors sooner than expected because of odours from the pen.
2. Noise from car hoot, dogs barking affects laying birds.
3. diseases are transfered easily.
4. You can't use battery cage in such area but deep litters with it's numerous disadvantages.

POUR ON is a liquid solution that is applied on the bird in small quantity for delousing. There are various types like the ivermectin pour on (different from ivermectin oral you put in water), cypermethrine or so(i forgot the correct name now). Visit any vet drug store, ask for pour on for birds and ask for usage direction.

Odour from battery cage system is more than deep litter system. So its better to use deep litter in such enviroment

I will advice those that want battery cages to buy good quality cages. All these locally made will disappoint in the long run. I will rather buy 2-3 cages monthly till I get wht I want than spend money on local cages.

I will not subscribe to point 1 and 2.
If you put proper environmental management in place you will manage your waste effectively and even convert the waste into energy for home and farm use. That I have good knowledge about it.
Point 2 .we adapt to different situations. So also animals .if you raise your day old chick in noisy environment it will adapt itself to that situation so when in cage it will have no effect on him.My first farm is with a residence once its fenced nobody will complain about what you are doing inside.
Remember people see with their noses when it comes to livestock facility building.
Most people believe farming is dirty so it will smell no matter what.

Because of the moisture content .In the battery cages its higher why in deep litter the wood shavings absorb the moisture.

Thank you sir.

Hello people how tuna de ooo, I am hanging tight, trying to retool, quick question, anyone know which of this DOC producers hatches DOC that can get to 2kg live within 5 to 6 weeks? When I started and bought from OBJ's farm in Ibadan, while they died a lot the very first few days, they did reach 2 kg within 6 weeks. Any idea? I know that my v-mix helped but I have read here that there are actually those categories of DOC that can reach 2kg within 6 weeks and another within 8 weeks.

Let me know.

when did you buy your Obasanjo DOC? Obasanjo DOC is one of the best i've seen so far. They are very strong and healthy.

besides, with quality feed and good management, you should be able to get a minimum of 1.8kg and above in 6 weeks.

In continuation from the earlier post. If symptoms persist after treatment mentioned earlier then get POUR ON and apply on each bird. Else, consult your doctor as advised by PARACETAMOL.
Finally,be patient, the weather is a bit harsh.give them multivitamin and feed well.
I've already started d treated and i'm adding the drug in the whole water for d day, wish u had told me dis earlier, again wat's pour on? thank u ,i appreciate.

Good afternoon house (my elders). I stumbled upon this awesome, educative thread a couple weeks back and I have really been inspired by the great nigerian minds here........the likes of jamp, obnelly, oga fnk, davidzfarm, omotiti, Rzq4, steel5800, Farmtech, laposte, AkayTopsy, kelvin96, valarinz, and all........u guys are really changing lives positively; how u have impacted knowledge and provided mentorship to many like me via this thread, is laudable, and highly commendable; such selfless service to humanity.
Having read every single page on the thread upto the 127th, I deemed it necessary to post for the first time and say a big thank you guys. Two weeks ago I knew absolutely nothing about running a poultry farm (even though iv always incubated plans of setting up one). Iv learnt quite alot but I also know the experience on the farm is a different kettle of fish smiley.
I intend setting up in a couple of weeks; I would be finalizing agreements on the land im purchasing for the farm. Its 5 plots (each plot is 100 by 100). As a newbie, I intend to start small with 500 birds at point of lay and grow from there hopefully. I will kip d house updated with my progress viz-a-viz building d coop, acquiring battery cages et al.
More grease to your elbows guys.......more like more eggs to your crates. Cheers.

The cages are still ok but some parts are rusting and some nuts are weak. The cages can not last up to 10yrs without maintenance. Also you will not get good return incase there is urgent need to raise cash .

Better thing good oooo but na money killl am

What you mentioned is a typical symptom of coccidiasis. Please treat for coccidiasis as soon as possible.

You can try the a drug called Pantacox. It's very effective against cocci. Also get a drug that has sulphur in it (sulphamix is common in the market).
