most of what u just said are historically correct, the part that dimka contacted Gowon to overthrow murtala is a little bit confusing to me, Dimka was a very ambitious person who planned the coup to take over as Military President ...Historically successful coups in Nigeria have also always been planned by a particular group of lucky/intelligient officers(most of them are now eating fat on Nigeria's wealth we all know them)... I said lucky because fate has always been working in their favour...

Am not sure Gowon actually wanted to be in power after the bloodless coup, i think Gowon was actually tired of power after the civil war wahalas...

One thing that still baffles me is the issue of overthrowing ones regime, does not mean there was no procedure in the military that dictates who becomes the next military head of state, was power always to be taken by force not by due process... I dont think there was any peaceful handing over during the military era...
my bros, this is classified information that has leaked all over the net. dimka himself was not interested in power. he wanted a good post where he can keep on enjoying but he wanted gowon to be the president again because gowon let the corrupt officers flourish. they held many secret meetings with gowon in england. in fact when the coup backfired gowon was implicated. they all ( the coup plotters )wanted to bring gowon back. they themselves just wanted a nice post under gowon

with regards to your other statement, it takes a crazy person to join the military so most of these guys are not 100 percent sane anyway. and once you hand them guns, they go power crazy. so its a question of , you have a gun and i have a gun, and yet you are the one enjoying on top. so let me coup you. even among fraternities in universities in nigeria they coup each other all the time for the post of the don. black people generally are just power drunk. and you introduce guns into the situation and you get a situation where it is virtually impossible for a military president to live out his tenure without some power drunk ego driven coupists wanting to take over

wikipedia entry. this same victor banjo captured benin ore by himself in less than a day. very brave man. wonder why he aligned with biafra doe

Biafra[edit]
When Biafra was proclaimed on May 30, 1967 Banjo was pardoned by President Odumegwu Ojukwu and made Colonel due to his involvement in a 1966 coup. When the Nigerian Army invaded Biafra on July 6, 1967 Ojukwu sent Banjo and Major Albert Okonkwo to invade Nigeria. Banjo was able to capture Benin City in less than a day and was able to get within 300 kilometers of the Nigerian capital Lagos. After Banjo was repulsed at the Battle of Ore he decided to plot a coup against Ojukwu as well a plot to assassinate Nigerian President Yakubu Gowon. Banjo wired a letter to the United States asking for support for his cause but was denied. One of Banjo's fellow plotters informed Ojukwu about the plot and Ojukwu had Banjo and 2 other coup plotters arrested. After a two-day trial Banjo and the two other plotters were found guilty of treason and were sentenced to death. On September 22, 1967 Banjo, Emmanuel Ifeajuna, and Philip Alale were marched into the Enugu city center and were tied to a pole. A firing squad of Biafran soldiers fired at them. When Banjo was hit he yelled "I'm not dead yet!" and he had to be shot four more times before he died.[4][5][6][7][8]

As brilliant as it must be kicking a ball about with Neymar, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in training, there comes a time in every man's life when you've just got to branch out on your own. Get some minutes on the pitch.
Barcelona striker Pedro, 27, has surely got a decent Premier League season or three in him? That's reportedly what Chelsea reckon anyway - they're said to have already put an offer in.
Pedro, who's available for a cool 30 million euros (£21m) after Barca reduced his buyout clause down from 150 million euros (£105m), says "there are offers" for him, but he hasn't said who from, and he hasn't yet said he plans to leave...

well all coups are different. in the coup that happened when they installed buhari, he was not part of the coup. do you think a disciplined man like buhari will take part in a coup ? coups are for the power drunk and reckless. buhari is neither reckless nor is he power drunk

Is Buhari more disciplined than Idiagbon who was part of the coup? Major Idowu Bamidele got wind of the 1983 coup plot and took it up with his chain of command to Buhari who was the GOC of the 3rd Div, and was subsequently arrested and detained for two weeks till the coup was executed, on Buhari's orders.

The death of Brigadier Bako(I believe he was the only casualty) cannot be used to exempt Buhari from the coup plot. Maj Jokolo rtd (Buhari's ADC and former Emir of Gwandu) disclosed that their(Buhari led group) merged with the IBB group, which was also plotting a coup about the same time, and sidelined a third plot being led by one Maj. Joseph Jetawo.

Many participants in a coup plot may not have an active role, but are well aware of the plot, provide logistics, do their part to conceal the plot, provide information and so forth. In the very least, Buhari was involved at this level.

I understand that sometimes coup plotters would bequeath power to a senior officer that they believe holds similar principles, but if the senior officer is aware of the coup plot before it is executed and does nothing to quell it, you better believe he has become a part of the plot. In Buhari's case, Major Bamidele's ordeal gives us at least one known instance of Buhari acting in support of the 1983 coup plot.

Bro, many things on wikipedia are baseless and can be edited by anyone with internet access. I've never heard anyone with some authority who witnessed the episode support that tale, so it remains just a rumor to me no matter how many times it's recycled. People still run around with the story of how Fajuyi insisted on dying with Ironsi, yet no one directly involved with that episode has ever given credence to that story. Facts suggest that he never had the option to choose his fate.

Most unfortunate.

Those whose relations, uncles, brothers, or Fathers were involved would know better.

Sad they had to die by firing squad.

Yet more painful is fact that some were falsely accused and murdered just like that!

The coup that brought Buhari and Abacha to power was an easy coup as they were plotted against civilian regimes and succeeded.
When it comes to strategy and Bravery, lets give it up to these men

Yakubu Gowon
Murtala Muhammed
Ibrahim Babangida.

These are men of sterner stuff.
I am not sure you are up to 30 or read much about coup history.

Abacha and Babangida have been involved in all the successful coups in Nigerian history. Abacha is however the most successful coup plotter in history of Nigeria. Abacha was the one who didn't allow Babangida to hand over to civilian govt when he warned blood will be shed. IBB had to announce his hands were tied.

............

Military career
Abacha was commissioned in 1963 after he
had attended Mons Officer Cadet School in
Aldershot , England . Before then, he had
attended the Nigerian Military Training College
in Kaduna. Refusing to accept a single political
appointment throughout his military career,
Abacha has been described as the epitome of
military discipline.
Abacha's military career is distinguished by a
string of successful coups. He is by some
records the most successful coup plotter in the
history of Nigeria's military. He took part in
the countercoup of July 1966, from the
conceptual stage, and may have been a
participant in the Lagos or Abeokuta phases of
the January 1966 coup. He was also a
prominent figure in every single successful
coup in Nigerian history, two of which brought
and removed General Muhammadu Buhari
from power in 1983. When General Ibrahim
Babangida was named President and
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1985,
Abacha was named Chief of Army Staff. He
was appointed Minister of Defence in 1990. [3]
[4]
In 1990, Abacha became the first Nigerian
soldier to attain the rank of a full General
without skipping a single rank. On 17
November 1993, Abacha overthrew the short-
lived transitional government of Chief Ernest
Shonekan . In September 1994, he issued a
decree that placed his government above the
jurisdiction of the courts, effectively giving him
absolute power. Another decree gave him the
right to detain anyone for up to three months
without trial. [5] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sani_Abacha
