No, it's not done in public, as in, infront of the whole community. It's actually done in a secluded place with only females around. Regarding photos of it on the internet, well, there are people who study these practises (white people to be exact), so when they know it is happening, they visit & maybe the take the photos too. IDK. People who know these things, will never take photos because they're considered sacred, just like child birth. I was shocked too when I saw pictures of guys "in the mountains" aka traditional circumcision schools because I as a woman doesn't get the privilege to see that, according to culture. However, we now live in the world of technology, so certain things do end up in the internet. It just is what it is. Nothing is too taboo these days

I'm referring to the testing btw, the nùdity part, oh well, people don't bat an eye when they see that. It's "normal".

Fair enough. Excuse the mean post.

No, it's because we're part of the same "family" so I understand the culture well. The Swazi people, the Ndebele, the Zulu & the Xhosa people are all Nguni people. Meaning we're different tribes but share similarities not only in language but in culture as well.

PS, to show the "family" thing, I've noticed they have incorporated part of the Xhosa culture, namely the facial decorations & the black & white cloth some are wearing. However, I know they're not Xhosa because Xhosa don't do a reed dance. It must be either zulu girls or swazi girls because they're the only ones out of the four Nguni tribes with a king. Xhosa & Ndebele don't have an active kingdom/ruler, so there's no need to be picking reed.

It's of no importance, it's just according to how things were done in the past. One thing I think people don't understand is that, South Africans still do things the way their forefathers did. Boys still get circumcised in the bushes, etc. It's looked down upon if they go to the hospital. It must be done the old fashion way or it's not quite right. We've not lost our identity just because we live in a multiracial nation.

The boys don't touch the girls because they're used to seeing it. Like I told someone earlier, no one bats an eyelid when they see someone topless. And people don't see it in a sexual way. It just bòobs. No big deal.

This story is not completely true. In Swaziland & parts of South Africa they do virginity testing. IT IS NOT COMPULSORY. Those that take part in it, do so on their own accord.

King Muswati DOES NOT choose a wife from the little children, he chooses from the older girls & to my understanding, the girls have a say. They can say, no.

Btw, even his daughters take part in the ceremony. It is called Reed Dance or uMhlanga. The history behind it is that, in the past, they used to send virgin girls to go pick up the reed that would be used to build the palace's cattle kraal. I don't know how it is in West Africa, but in the SADC, the kraal is the most important part of a homestead. It should be pure (women aren't allowed in the kraal) because that's where most family rituals are done, so I guess that's why virgins were allocated the task of picking up the building material. Now times are different, however, not every girl that claims to be a virgin is a virgin, like in the olden days, that's when the testing comes in, just to make sure they're still "pure" before carrying such an important royal task. It has now become part of their lifestyle to remain virgins because they want to be part of the celebrations & of course some have the hope of being the King's next bride. They're there to peacock for him--some & some are just there for the ceremony because it is considered an honour to be part of that.

Anyway, the 1st pic is king muswati's own daughter. She also takes part in the reed dance. The 2nd pic is of the girls, the potential brides to be aka palace's virgin reed pickers. 3rd pic is an example of a kraal.
Quite revealing....

My brother, the examination of underage girls is new to me. It was not done. Was done only to girls of age. I discussed this very same topic with another member on another thread & what I told him was--if they're now checking young girls, it must be because of the incidents of grown men molesting children. IDK. That's just my suspicion. It's not done in public, btw

True you have a valid point. We have a whole lot of cultural heritage and traditions that are gradually going into oblivion (such as our literatures, dressing mode, festivals, mode of greeting, what we eat and how we eat etc). These should be guarded and ensure our generation and unborn generation do not loose their heritage.

But seriously I frown at the manipulation of these young maidens this is equivalent to the killing of twins. It's a breach on culture and ethics. Even beyond reasonable doubt this is so crude..........

absolutely ...ther are some hu manipulate culture to suit their own needs e.g child marriages nd subjugation of women . Some of those things done in the name of culture dnt belong in the world we live in today . But there are those that are regarded as ethically acceptable nd these we need to preserve .

lol, but you're not gonna see girls walking around topless all the time. They only do it during traditional ceremonies. Taking it all the way back to the time of Eden grin

People often say nùdity is primitive blah blah blah, forgetting that from the beginning of time, humans roamed the earth nùde. Even when one is born, they enter the world, nùde. So us here down south, don't mind going biblical & connect to the roots, so to speak.

I hope this won't get me banned but here are more pics. Mind you, here we don't look at it in a sexual way. It's simply a way of being.

Yeah, we Xhosa's are very strong coz our men are to brilliant so we get sharper in order to deal with them.

On topic, i would never engage Nigerians on culture and tradition. They think abandoning their culture is civilization. Even their traditional wear is made up and modernized as traditional wear. But ours is original but they would say we are backward or uncivilized. Thank God we strong South African wherethe ones who went through Apartheid if it was them they would have lost any track of who they are.

all you mentioned above are crimes punishable by law and by God,which its practices is not peculiar to Nigeria alone, but if you must learn from me then know that most south africans are too paronoid which we all saw in the recent xenophobic killings,i dont choose to dwell on that because every society has its own problems, but when the people that are supposed to be speaking out against such oppressions are busy painting evil with white, then the legitimacy and morality of such society will be open for public debate.
