And back at Sadiq's place. "This look awful!" Exclaimed Mrs Animashuan observing Vanessa's decoration.

"No it isn't. It's ..its..its okay" replied her husband as if not sure of his comment.

"We could have hired a good event planner" she continued lamenting.

"The devil you know is better than the angel you don't know. Moreover Asmau loves it, remember its all for her " he defended.

It was about 9:30pm when Sadiq received a phone call that was going to change everything. The phone call from kazim about his result was nothing compared to what he was going to hear this time around.

"Hello Humaira" Sadiq as he answered the call. "Kwana biu" he said, trying to show off the little he still remembered.

But the response from Humaira was different. There was almost like a shiver from the other end of the phone.

"I have a bad news to tell you" she began. Sadiq listened mutely.

The line was silent for almost a minute before she spoke up. At first she was not very audible, and when he finally heard, his phone slipped from his grip and landed on the floor!

There is something about death, which is, it separate us from our loved ones.

It separate us from those we distanced ourself from even when we loved them, and only their departure from this world
makes us realise how much they meant to us, but by then it would have been too late!

Sadiq didn't really know them well but part of them that he knew was beautiful. The bad news was that Zeenat parents had died. One of the most dreadful thing in life is losing your heroes. Those you cherish and won't ever break your heart.

Sadiq couldn't imagine how sad and devastated she must be now. He had tried calling her but her cell phone was switched off.

The next day was little Asmau's birthday, and it was also a new year!

The sad news had crawled painfully into a new year. There was going to be a bit of good surprise that day but it wasn't enough to wipe off the thought of the death of Zeenat parents.

"Happy birthday to you!" they sang to Asmau. She looked pretty in her orange gown. After cutting her cake they all paused as she dragged a leather bag from under the table where the cake was.

"Clocking nine years is not a child's play" little Asmau began her speech.
"as i grew up i made some absurd birthday wishes like having a cute baby tiger and some others. But you all put up with me and never denied me anything".

As she gave her speech her parents,
Sadiq and Vanessa wondered if the one year plus was what had such a big impact on her.

"If i ever have a chance to choose a family again I'll always choose this family over and over again" she continued. At this point Mrs Animashaun had a tear in her eyes.

Everyone wanted to hold her and hug her and bless her with endless kisses, but she was not done yet.

"Mum this apron is for you, i noticed the one you had got burnt alittle" she said handing it to her.

"Dad, because you're always away on business trips i bought you this handkerchief. On it is written 'best dad ever, we love you' so you'll always have us close with you when you wipe your face with it"

She dipped her hand into the almost empty leather bag. "Brother Sadiq this is yours. I heard you complaining about how hard your hair brush was. This one is soft."

She delved her little hand into the leather and brought out the last present.

"I can't thank you enough for all the wondeful decorations you've been doing for me, i hope you'll love this pack of chocolate?" She concluded, giving it to
Vanessa.

And who said kids can't be adults!?

They didn't spare her! They made sure they hugged and squeezed her tightly, and placed lots of kisses on her adorable face. By the time they were done she wished she had not made them love her that much.

It was a small birthday party they threw for her. Some of their neighbors kids came too.

"Do you mind me stealing your friend for a minute?" Mr Animashuan said to Vanessa and he pulled Sadiq with him.

'This is my chance!' thought Vanessa walking hurriedly into Sadiq's room. It didn't take time to copy the story into her phone. She was already done when she heard footsteps approaching, she quickly grabbed the diary on the bed head and pretended like she was reading it.

"Oh you're the one in here!" said Mrs Animashaun.

"Yes ma'am. Hope i didn't startle you?" Vanessa, trying as much as possible to look innocent.

"No you didn't" she said. Observing the diary with Vanessa, she said. " I have been trying to read that diary but i can't. Sadiq and his sister have a coded language they communicate with, that's what the diary is written with. Can you read it?" She asked Vanessa
who was at first unaware of the strange language used in the diary.

"No. I cant decipher it. Not at all" she replied, straining her eyes as she flipped the diary. She couldn't understand it as well.

"I told your mom that if you get admitted I'll buy you a car" Mr Animashaun informed Sadiq as they stepped out of the house.

Sadiq heart almost popped out. What if
he had lied that he failed so he can attend same uni with Vanessa! Imagine what he would have deprived himself of!

"Thank you dad!" He hugged and took a short tour round the car. The keys were still with his dad.

Sadiq motioned to take the keys and his dad drew his hand back.

"There is a condition. If you can prove yourself by starting with a first class in your first year then you'll be free to start driving your car."

"Don't worry the car will be here waiting for you till you come and claim it" his dad assured him.

How easy or hard is it to get a first class?

The week soon ran by and Sadiq was finally preparing to travel back to kano.

Back at the Walters, Vanessa was with her friend.

"Hope you will take me with you this time around. The last fashion show you didn't inform me, and I'm sure it was because of your new friend" complained Jennifer.

"She has nothing to do with it. I just forgot to mention it to you" Vanessa replied, scrolling down her phone and smiling unconsciously. But she didn't forget. She did it on purpose.

"Don't forget this time" said Jennifer even though she knew Vanessa was not saying the truth.

Jennifer was looking ravishing recently. Her skin looked well kept, her hair were braided beautifully. There was something different about her, actually everything was different and that frightened Vanessa. It frightened her because she didn't want to compete with Jennifer.

Jennifer hardly took care of herself but when she did, she looked 'ruthlessly beautiful'. And that scares the life out of Vanessa.

"So Sadiq is going back to Kano this week" began Jennifer.

"How did you know?!" were Vanessa's sharp reply.

"God! Look how you asked instantly! What is it with you?" Jennifer asked " I just read it on his bbm status"

Vanessa had a sigh of relief inside her. She didn't want Sadiq to see Jennifer like this! She was looking too brutal.

"Oh. I thought he was to travel next week that's why i was shocked" she lied conveniently.

"I thought you two communicate frequently. Its unfortunate he won't be your escort to the event" Jennifer using her palm to hit her head slightly probably because the plaited hair were too tight and were inconveniencing her.

"I'll manage" was Vanessa's reply. She couldn't bare if he was around by then and Jennifer were to frolic around him!

But wait what is wrong with her. Why is she acting so protective and jealous!

"Grrrrrrrr!" her phone vibrated. It was an SMS from Sadiq.

Talk about the devil!

"Hey I'm coming over" was the message.

Bad idea!

Without wasting time she replied instantly. "Oh sorry I'm not at home. I'll drop by your place soon. Don't leave home!"

After sending it, she reread her message and realised that she sounded like a mom!

"Okay. Expecting you" he replied back.

"Oh my God!" exclaimed Vanessa.

"What is it?!" asked the startled Jennifer.

"Its 4:30 and Grand dad sent me to deliver a parcel to someone by 4 O'clock" replied Vanessa standing up eagerly.

"You're just thirty minutes late." said Jennifer glancing at her wrist watch. "Come on lets go I'll accompany you"

"Oh no thanks but its a family stuff. I have to go alone. But i promise to call you!"

"Okay dear. Keep you promise. I mean about the event" Jennifer giving her an eye.

"I'll. Bye sweety" as they exchanged hugs and Jennifer left.

"Thank God! Let her carry her wahala go abeg." she sighed feeling relieved at Jennifer's departure.

She waited for an hour before she left for the Animashaun's.

It gotta be her, since the parents didn't give birth to her, they found her at their doorstep with no ounce of idea about how she got there.

And her recent birthday seem to have summed it up, in my own cognition. The ways she gave them gifts, I think her thinking is deeper than a nine years old kid. #my opinion though, I might be very wrong.

P.S I started reading today and I already finished every pages, please a more frequent update would be much appreciated, as I'm a voracious reader.

I love your story, fact#

Sadiq was just entering the house when he heard a 'boo!' from behind the door.

"You're a big chicken!" laughed Vanessa hysterically as the items in Sadiq's hands flew to different directions.

"When did you get here?" Sadiq.

"Some minutes ago. You left the door open"

"Oh. I really should stop doing that!" Sadiq picking up the last item.

"So what's up?" she asked, sounding chipper.

"Nothing. I just wanted to see you. Since you moved from here to the Walter's it seemed like you've drifted away" Sadiq.

"Aww. Sorry. I guess you just missed climbing into my room through the window" she laughed.

"Yeah. That too" he nodded.

Vanessa sighed as she slumped on a couch. "Seems all the fun time have passed away. Now you're leaving for kano and I'm going to unilag. It's just so awful!"

"I couldn't agree more" he said and he remembered how gullible she was.

"Promise me you'll take care of yourself".

"I will. I promise no more powder" she assured him.

The good thing about having some kind of friends is that they will always have your back, always!

The day finally arrived and he was all pack and set to leave. Vanessa had said goodbye the previous day. She told him she couldn't watch him leave, that'll make her cry.

His dad drove them to the airport, and all through he kept advising him about studying hard, not following bad friends e.t.c.

Well, he knew how to choose his friends.

Asmau had made sure he took the diary with him. She had a little tear hanging on her eyelashes when Sadiq hugged them and left.

They say some people bring happiness where ever they go and other people bring happiness when ever they go, while some bring sadness when ever they leave.

Which category do you fall on?

The flight to kano was about an hour.

Sadiq already knew his way to his destination. He wanted to surprise them so he didn't call to inform them that he was coming.

He dialed his parents and informed them that has gotten to kano. It was great to be in kano again. The air smelled fresh. The harmattan season was almost disappearing and a little chill filled the air. And he was charmed by the environment.

Somehow he realised that he missed this place. The language, the people, everything about this state made him appreciate life. And most of all he was excited to see this beautiful family again.

As the taxi almost got to his destination, he pulled out his phone and called Kazim.

"Hello Kazim"

"Sadiq how are you" asked Kazim

"I'm fine. Just at home" lied Sadiq

"Oh nice. When are you coming?" Continued Kazim.

"Please i can't hear you can you move outside so the line will be clearer?" lied Sadiq in an attempt to get him to come outside so he'll surprise him.

"Okay hold on let me step out. I'm already outsi...." as he said that he sighted Sadiq standing by a taxi. "What! You crook!" Kazim exclaimed, rushing towards Sadiq, hitting him several times then exchanged handshakes and hugs.

"God i missed this place!" Sadiq looking around.

"You are just in time. This is the best time of the year. But unfortunately Zeenat parent's death has caused a lot of sadness" Kazim still recovering from the surprise and helping Sadiq unload his luggage from the taxi.

"How is she?" Sadiq feeling pity for her.

"She's strong. They traveled to Abuja for the burial." he informed.

He wanted to enquire when they would come back but he opt from asking.

"I see this time you brought more than a back pack!" Smiled Kazim, as they faced difficulty carrying the luggage in.
"Remember what you said the first time you came? 'I'm going to be here for just two weeks'" jeered Kazim, immitating Sadiq then added "Now you're going to be miserable here like the rest of us"

They couldn't hold the laughter and had to drop the luggage!

Sadiq was welcomed by Alhaji Najib and the two little twins. The rest of the family accompanied Zeenat family to Abuja for the burial, and that made the house very empty.

"When do you intend to collect your admission letter?" Kazim enquired.

"Today!" Said Sadiq. He would rather go out than stay indoors. It was just empty.

"I was hoping you'll say that" Kazim.
They drove to the uni and went through all the necessary rigmarole of collecting the admission letter and even started some registration. It was going to be an hectic week of moving from one building to another.

This went on through out the week. There were long queues waiting for blood test, scanning, and some other annoying tiring documentation that needed to be done.

In between these busy period Sadiq got a whatsapp message from Vanessa.

"Hii, so i need your help. There is a little crisis" was her message.

Normally he would have been very worried, panicky and etcetera, but the busy week had exhausted him.

"Tell me" he replied.

"Next tomorrow is that event and i don't have an escort!" She replied.

And that's a crisis!

"How can i help?" He replied.

"I don't know. I'm just so confused"

After thinking he replied about two minutes later.

"What if Eze is available?" he asked.

"That'll be fine" she replied then sent some smiling emoticon to show how relieved she was.

"All right I'll talk to him" he assured.

"Thanks dear. Oh and you can tell him that Sarah will be there as well" she added.

"Oh really! You guys are going to have fun without me!"

"I already miss you! But be good" she replied and they ended their chat.

He dialed Eze's number.

"How far na" Eze

"Good. How your side?" Sadiq

"Not bad. Preparing to travel to lag this weekend" Eze announced.

"For what" enquired Sadiq

"Holiday na"

"Okay. I need a little favour from you, actually its Vanessa that needs your favour" began Sadiq.

"Wetin happen. What does she want"

"They have this event next tomorrow and she needs an escort. She wants you to escort her" informed Sadiq

"Guy you dey craze? That girl is trouble o. Apart from that, i won't be in lag till five days time because i plan to travel on weekend"

"Just help a friend na"

He laughed. "You want make i jump inside fire abi. Please no thanks"

"Sarah is going to be there too!"

"Say wetin? Serious!?" asked Eze desperately.

"I swear!"

"See this guy, why you no tell me since na! Abeg send me the details and her number sharply. Na tomorrow be the event abi? I fit enter night flight reach there tomorrow!"

There was an uncontrollable laughter from Sadiq.

"Guy why you dey laff na? Talk abeg." added Eze.

"Okay no vex" laughed Sadiq then continued while still chuckling, "the event no be tomorrow na next tomorrow. So just relax"

"Okay send me the details please. I'm waiting" and they ended the call.

As Sadiq sent him the details he still had a smile on his face. He then sent Vanessa a message.

"You have an escort now"

"Thanks you're the best " she replied.
