History of these people ( settlements ) or groups is what gives a finer picture of the History of KALABARI KINGDOM....


There was however no KINGDOM prior to King Amakiri.

Each of these settlements were independent settlements prior to King Amakiri.

Ancient Kalabari settlement ( Calabar ) was the first to have contact with Europeans in the 15th century.
Several rulers of the place and people existed before one Owuere ye Daba became known in the 16th century.
He controlled the slave trade on the river Calabar where he served as middle man between Portuguese ship dwelling slave traders and the hinterland Arochukwu Igbos at the mouth of the river .

These Ijaw people had Efik neighbors and had among them a more influential group who called themselves Koro ame that claimed to be ancestors of one Opukoroye . There were other families also .
Some times the Koro ame were also known as Awome or perhaps Awome was another group of Ijaws that lived in the settlement .

The settlement was abandoned in the early 17th century during the reign of Owuere ye Daba.. It was due to the treatment of the new slave traders who had dislodged the Portuguese. They were the Dutch. The Dutch chose to enslave the people so the people fled after some brutal encounter. This was cos of on going war between the European slave traders in the region. Eventually, the French took over control and in no time the English dislodged the French.

The Ijaw people however, abandoned the place and scattered themselves to new settlements West ward . Some settled among the Okoloma while the Bulk of them went further West to join another Ijaw settlers in the what was called TORUSARAMA PIRI.


Torusarama piri was beehive of activities and it quickly became a center of trade due to its location. .

It was in Torusarama piri the making of the KINGDOM known as KALABARI KINGDOM happened..


Torusarama piri was said to be initially settled by Ijaw people along their various wards.. The settlers were mainly from the early groups mentioned above and other Ijaws far away..

Other "Eastern" Ijaw clans are the Okrika, Ibani (the natives of Bonny, Finima and Opobo) and Nkoroo. They are neighbours to the Kalabari in present day Rivers State of Nigeria.

Other related Ijo sub-groups which have distinct linguistic relations but very close blood (i.e genetic), cultural and territorial homogenity with the rest of the Ijaw are Epie-Atisa clan, Engenni people and Udekama (which speak Delta Edoid Languages). Others are Ogbia clan, Bukuma, Abuloma (Obulom) and Andoni (which speak Delta Cross languages).

It was discovered in the 1980s that a nearly-extinct Berbice Creole Dutch, spoken in Guyana, is based on Ijo lexicon and grammar. Its nearest relative seems to be Eastern Ijo, most likely Kalabari (Kouwenberg 1994).

It's quite a while now, i have been offline, missed you all.
Permit me to comment on Killayut's recent post concerning descendants of Berepiki staying outside the Homestead, Berepiki's Compound.
First, I would want to point out that, it sound strange and worrisome for Killayut, TOM Alabraba; to accuse other Berepiki descendants for not living and growing up within the Berepiki homestaed, Because, the Tom i know if my memory still serves me well, Did not live and grow up in berepiki's compound in Bakana, rather he he lived in Iyalla's Compound, precisely Elder solomon iyalla's compound, popularly called abraham solo wari, besides the christ army Church.
Other well known friends and relatives in same compound with TOM are IGONIKONYE, IBISO YELLOWE, TARIBO YELLOWE, Dr. Bob Yellowe, Akonte Alabraba, Mr. Jene Braide just to mention a few.
So to acuse others like Bros Kiwi for their preference for Iyalla compound over Berepiki is really uncalled for.
The Tom i know, whose mother i only got to know recently is a Berepiki, introduced to me by my mum. I respected and admired TOM while he was in Bakana, not even knowing then, he was a relative.
If it is the same TOM, as described above, Then i say, " I bote" " I bolate ", because for a very long long time he was outside the country, precisely he left Bakana for America.
And if it's you, the same Tom, I would rather you Help and encourage Bros KIWI return and settle down to bring his wealth of experience to enhance the lives of fellow folks, just the WAY our Brother Ken Yellowe is doing by investing in GAS GATHERING PROJECTS, whereby many gain means of lively hood, Ken Yellowe is from the Bagshaw extraction, who left the shores whilse he was a baby. If i still have the chance to grow up in that environment i'll still choose to live in Iyalla's compound for many reasons, though some of the reasons may not hold water in today's Bakana. More because negative forces had polluted the entire landscape.

This tendency to revise history is very bad from the boat dwelling Ijaws. Saying Kalabari means Kala and Bari is a devilish falsification. Kalabari's origin points to Igbo and Efik. Though they are nearly completely Ijawnized now.

Mr man! There's nothing like igbo people in Okrika, any Igbo you see in Okrika are either descendant of slaves or are foreigners living there. There are no indigenous igbos in Okrika be guide.
