Biola sat on the chair closest to the patient who laid unconscious on the bed,she constantly peered into her face to check if her eyes were open.

Her mind was in great turmoil as she stared at her daughter,she had been worried sick when she received a distress call that her daughter had been rushed to the hospital.she had come along with her husband,Kenneth.

But she had been more worried,upon her arrival at the hospital,the doctor had attended to her but she was yet to open her eye.It was some minutes past twelve in the morning,Aisha had gone to fetch her some refreshments,she was quite hungry,she kept dialling Jacobs number but it wasn't going through.she couldn't figure out what could have led to such incident.

"Jacob... .... " Jane stirred on the bed,her eyes were shut but she seemed to be conscious of her environment. Biola rushed to get the doctor,he came in with a nurse and asked Biola to excuse them.

Biola sat with her husband,who tried to calm her down at the reception.Aisha returned with the snacks and drink,Bibi took some bite and sipped her drink after so much persuasion from her husband,she asked Aisha to take away the rest,looking up in time to see Funmi walk to the nurse at the reception.
"Funmi" she called loud enough for the other woman to hear.Funmi turned around and walked up to her friend."Oh Funmi, my daughter is lying on the bed sick." she said quietly. "Please calm down Biola,my daughter-in-law is going to be alright." she said while Biola led her to Jane's room.

The doctor had just finished attending to her,"Madam Odenuga." he called her to come along to his office,"Your daughter has been asking to see her husband,i don't know why he is not here by now."

"I'm worried too,his number is not going through." Biola answered,"How's she now?"

The doctor was quiet for a moment,"Did you know she was pregnant?"

Biola nodded in the affirmative.

"She must have hit the floor hard,i guess she fell,her arm has been stitched,but she lost the baby." he said.

Biola felt bad for her poor Jane,"Oh no!"

"You shouldn't break this news to her,until she is fully recovered from her shock from the fall so as not to complicate things,you have to be strong too,she needs all the rest she can get."

Funmi had been shocked too,she drank some water from the bottle in her hand,she had shared the goodnews with her husband that Jacob was expecting a child.She didn't know their Joy would be cut short.

Biola had explained to her that Janet should not be informed yet.How would her daughter-in-law feel now,she glanced at the screen of her phone,Jacob was yet to return her call,what could be so important that he hadn't come to check his wife after dropping her last night.she knew something had gone wrong somewhere she guessed in her mind.He had called her to come to the hospital but he wasn't even here himself.She turned around when she felt a tap on her shoulder, it was Biola.
"My husband is leaving." Biola said.
Funmi got up and saw him off to the car,the two women returned to the reception."Biola I'm really sorry about the baby.Jane is my daughter too and i have always treated her as one." she said holding her friend by the hand.

"It's alright dear,lets just pray that she gets better soon." Biola said, she was trying to figure it all out,how did she fall? What could have happened the night of the party.she was still in thoughts when the nurse who had been attending to Jane informed them that she was awake now.

The two women thanked her and found their way to her ward,Jane was awake,she looked weak and tired too,she looked up when the door opened.she was disappointed that it was not Jacob,she managed a smile for her mothers.
The women sat by her side,one at her right and the other at the left,she looked around the sparsely furnitured ward,it smelt clean and had a fresh scent.The pillow and the bed were comfy enough,the air conditioner was off and a table was at her right hand with some beverages and food.
"How are you dear." Funmi asked holding Jane's hand.

"Fine." she nodded,she starred at Funmi,she was cause of all that had happened,she wished she had disobeyed her mother-in-law,she wouldn't be lying here sick.

"Mother?" she called, "Where is my husband? Is he not here?"

"He's on his way." Funmi lied,she saw the tension ease on Jane's face.

"My children?"

"They are all fine." Biola answered with a smile,"They send their regards and they want you to get well soon and come home.

"So what happened to you?"Bibi,her couldn't help but ask,in a blink,the memory of the other night flashed in her head. "Huh!" she winced in pain.

"It was after the party,we had retired to our room." Jane began,"I took a shower and ,,, ,,,," and she paused to catch her breath,the event was just too bad to relate. "I got on the bed,,,,,"
"Go on." Funmi said, the door flung open and all eyes went to the door.

Hannah hummed loudly as she had a bath,she had been humming ever since she came back from the party on sunday,she had this bright exciting look across her beautiful face.

"Hannah!" Rekia called,she was coming from the kitchen wearing a black polo over shorts.

Hannah's laughter rang out from the bathroom,"Yes dear." she answered.

"Breakfast is ready." Rekia said.

Hannah draped a towel over her fair skin,she smiled to herself,the name 'Mammy water' rang in her heart,and it reminded her of those early years in school.Her roommates had nick named her that because of her fair skin,some even tagged her yellow pawpaw.

She creamed her body,and wore a bright blue shirt over short fitting white skirt,she dressed her hair and face,before going to the table for breakfast.The others couldn't help but notice her renewed happiness.
"You still haven't shared the goodnews with us." Toun said,dishing boiled spaghetti and fish stew.while Rekia served cold juice.

"Hmmm,i should be thanking you sweet sister."she got up and embraced Toun.

Toun smiled and sat down to enjoy her meal,"What have i done dear?"

Hannah picked her cutleries,and drummed the table,"All attention please,i want to say a big thank you for inviting Ade to the party."she beamed happily.

"Go on." Rekia said.

Hannah laughed"Ade and i spoke at the party,he explained all that happened to me,i feel so sorry that i shut him away all this while." she said."He really wants us to start something new,and i told him i would give it a thought,but i know right here." she placed her hand on her heart."There's really not much to think about because i am very much in Love with him."

"Wow." Both girls chorused loudly, "Thats really nice,i am so happy for you." Toun smiled.

"Its quarter to seven girls,you'll be late for work." Rekia said. "Oh no!,please pack my food Rekia,i don't want to be late." Hannah rushed to her room to get bag and jacket and car key,while Rekia packed their flask.

Hannah came out ready,"Girls I'll gist you when i come back from work." she said moving towards the door, "Huh!" she turned back, "I forgot to tell you that we have a date tonight." she said grabbing her flask and rushing out.

Rekia opened the gate while the girls drove out,she closed them and returned inside to clean the room.A part of her was glad that Hannah was becoming her usual self,she was smiling so much,laughing so much,just because she found love again.But another strange part of her... ...... felt truly sad.


But how could life be so cruel, some people were just lucky and some unfortunate.she was suffering for something she had no idea of,was it a curse? Manmade? she hoped she would stop living this life of pretence,but how would she face them with the truth about her life,something she had hidden for years.Would she ever find some man to love her despite her true nature.

"No!" she cried,

"Never!" she screamed out in pain and frustration,picking the flower vase from the dining table,she smashed it hard against the wall,cutting her finger,blood smeared her hands as she sank down and let the tears flow.she felt some peace in her soul.

Words were not enough to describe how she felt later that night,since family or friends are not allowed to spend the night in the patients ward.

Her mother and mother-in-law had gone home,her kid's voice over the phone had been the only thing that brightened her day,Adam pleaded with her to come home quick,but Eve had wished her a quick recovery,those were her bundle of joy.she picked the magazine by the bed,flipped two pages at a time,her mind was not in it,so she dialled her husband's number,it rang but no one picked the call.

But what could have happened?She had been filled with hope in the evening when the door opened thinking it was her husband but it was Nnamdi,and why hadn't he called nor checked her at the hospital.she felt bitter tears sting the sides of her eyes,she picked the Bible by her pillow and placed it on her chest,she was no fanatic,but she knew God answers prayer,she asked God to protect her family especially her husband,she must have fallen asleep because when she woke up it was morning and a fresh flower had just been placed in the room.


Jane glanced around the room,she wished she was home already,her mother arrived quite early with her breakfast,she ate to her fill before the doctor attended to her.she was getting better.Funmi had called too,that she was on her way.

The atmosphere was better today,she had fabricated an entirely different story for the women,not forgetting to include her husband's sudden anger.Funmi explained to her that Jacob's anger was better now,and that it used to be worse when he was younger.

The women made her laugh,fed her,and reflected on their youthful days in the university.she didn't know this part of her mum existed.she felt truly at ease.Funmi had bought varieties of fruit,provision and useful items,for the children and herself.she was indeed blessed to have such a mother-in-law.

She was glad when the children came with the driver to pick her home in the evening,Aisha had packed all her stuffs in the car.But Funmi had one word for her,"Please be patient with my son,nurture him with love,he is your baby too,always give me a call when you can't handle him,okay?"

Jane managed a smiled,"Thanks mother,i will do as you say." Biola appeared at the door,"What are you two discussing there?' she asked helping her daughter off the bed.

"It's nothing Biola,my daughter and i are just chatting." Her mother-in-law answered.Jane stood and leaned on her mother,"I can't wait to have this baby." she said her right hand rubbing her stomach. "But,,,,i don't know why i feel so empty inside."


If Jane had looked up in time,she would have caught the look her mothers exchanged quickly,"Your baby is fine." Funmi smiled at her.

Funmi waited for the driver to leave,before getting in her car,they would drop Biola on the way.She wished her daughter-in-law all the best.


Jane didn't let her excitement show as they drove home,the kids chattered excitely about their activities at school and their forthcoming excursion.

And by the time they arrived home,they had fallen asleep,Aisha carried them to their room and tucked them in.Jane saw her husband's car in the compound which means he was home.

The least she expected of him was to have shown up at the entrance to welcome her home and also give vivid reasons for his unnecessary absence at the hospital.But she was disappointed,he wasn't even in the bedroom when she got there.

She was tired already,she sat by the bedside and took her medications,she was feeling sleepy by now.she shivered slightly,she wasn't alone anymore,she could sense someone else's presence and the scent was familiar,it was her husband,she knew it,she could feel it,he was here,in the same room with her.

She was feeling cold from inside,but her mother-in-law's piece of advice came to her heart,Patience is the key.she relaxed,releasing her held up breath.

She turned around to face him,he stood by the door starring at her,she couldn't even place the emotion in them.He stared back at her,there was an uncomfortable silence in the room.
"Jane"
"Jacob"

Both calling the other person's name at the same time,"Welcome home." Jacob said finally,and walked into the bathroom.

Janet was shocked beyond words,she had merely nodded her in response,what an epic welcome home,she waited for him to come out.
"Jacob." she called quietly.

"Yes." he answered coldly.

"Is this what i deserve from you? A cold shoulder?After what happened to me?" Jane asked as twin tear slid down her face in the dimly lit room.

"It's too early for us start,just take your pills and sleep." he said calmly. "Did you really say that to me?" she asked again.

Jacob let out a sigh,'Oh Jane! Isn't it enough that you have a bandaged arm? You lost the baby too! What else do you want?" he shouted at her.

Jane's face light up in fear,she must have heard wrong,he definetly didn't mean that."What are you saying?What about my baby?"she asked.

"Why do you have tears on your face?" Adetoun asked her friend cum sister.She arrived home an hour ago,she had freshened up and quenched her thirst with some freshly made orange juice.She had been at the door for some minutes now,and had seen her friend bend her head in thought for a while now.

"Oh,its nothing." Rekia wiped her face with the back of her palm,she sat up in bed and picked her phone.Toun didn't seem to be convinced,"You were crying." she said coming to sit by her.

"Something flew into my eyes,but i have removed it." Rekia insisted,she couldn't risk letting out her fears.And having no one to confide in made the issue weigh her down.This was not just something you opened up to a second party.

"Rekia,we've been friends for some years now,i don't think you should be hiding anything that is bothering you from me." Toun said enveloping Rekia's hand in hers.

Rekia let out a sigh,accompanied with an insincere smile across her make up void face,"I'm perfectly fine,stop behaving like a mother hen,or do i look like a chick?" Toun laughed,"Alright then,what are we having for dinner?"

"Potato porridge with plenty of fish and vegetables." Rekia said licking her upper lips. "Yummmy." Toun laughed,their chatter was interrupted by Rekia's phone,the latter had a call. "Shhh...Shhh...its my sweetheart on the line." Toun quietly excused her and went to the sitting room.

She had just settled to watch Mtn Project fame when the door bell sounded,it was Hannah who came in,brandishing a smile on her face,with two grocery bags,a shopping bag and her hand bag.
"Don't tell me,you went shopping alone?"Toun asked helping her with the bags.Hannah looked a bit tired as she sank on the couch,she unbuttoned her shirt and pulled it off,leaving a blue camisole on.

"Ofcourse not,Ade took me shopping,look,i had the time of my life this evening,i enjoyed a sumptous dinner,he was all sweet and yummy on me,i had to stop him from buying me the whole store." Hannah said running out of breath,the bags on the floor did justice to her claims. "I'm happy for you dear,i wish you two all the best."

"Thnks dear,let me freshen up,my eyes are sleepy already,i don't think i'll be having dinner anymore." Toun laughed,"Too bad you'll be missing Rekia's potato porridge with fish and vegies."

Hannah turned back in a flash,"Oh no,i'm never going to miss that." she laughed,that was one dish she could eat over and over.

Adetoun had a gracious smile around her face,things were getting better for Hannah or so she thought.

For three consecutive days,Jane weeped non stop,there was no one to console her,she had rushed to the bathroom,brought out her pregnancy test and to her greatest surprise she tested negative,her baby was gone!

Amidst the turmoil,unrest lay in her heart,why would her husband treat her with such contempt.Her emotions were in a rage and she battled furiously to keep them at bay,she looked sick and unkept.

And in those three days,her husband made it a point of duty to say his quick and sarcastic,"Good morning and Good night". Jane's soul was bitter,she hadn't been to her supermart for a whole week now.as that was the least of her worries,she had capable hands to manage the business at her absence.

It was a warm thursday night,on a normal day,she would have returned home early to attend to the kids,welcome her husband,and try her hand at seducing her husband,which she succeeded most times,they would love up on the patio,swim and retire to their bedroom.

But tonight was different,it was some minutes past seven,her husband would be home anytime from now,she had tucked her children in bed and she settled to watch a TV programme on air,the anchor had just began the show when the door bell sounded,Jane's hearted raced hard,her husband had arrived,but when Nnamdi opened the door it was someone else.

"Toye!" she exclaimed,"Good evening." she managed a quick smile.

Toye came in,"Hi Jane,how are you?" he asked. "I am fine,and you?" even though he noticed her sullen face,he was quiet about it.

"Fine,what brings you here?" She asked, Toye smiled,"I am here to invite you to my house for dinner tomorrow."

"I...my hus....em...i " she stammered,"Relax dear,my wife and the kids are coming home from the states tomorrow,please come with your husband to the dinner." he said.

Jane thought for a while,"I don't think...." she began but Toye cut her short, "Pls don't say no."

"Huh...hmmm,okay,we'll try." Jane said, "That's better." Toye got up and Jane saw him off to the door,before Jane could turn away,Toye had planted a neat kiss on her forehead.she was surprised,she looked up to see her husband standing behind Toye.

Fear,scorn,contempt,rage,bitterness were what she expected from him but instead,his eyes held a strange stillness that sent cold shivers sliding down her spine as she watched Toye from the corner of her eye,leaving the compound in a haste.She was confused...
