HungerBAD:
“We arrested Nweke Pauline Osita with 65 debit cards and Egesiokwu Frank Chukwudi with twenty-four (24) debit cards during screening of passengers on an Ethiopian airline flight to China,” the statement quoted chairman of NDLEA Ahmadu Giade as saying.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two suspects in connection with smuggling of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

A statement by the NDLEA’s spokesman Ofoyeju Mitchell said Nweke Pauline Osita, 40 years old and Egesiokwu Frank Chukwudi, 41 years old were arrested at the weekend with ATM cards of different banks.

Giade said that the suspects conspired with others to evade scrutiny from government agencies by opening various bank accounts with the aim of using the debit cards for daily withdrawals abroad.

The director of Assets and Financial Investigation of the agency, Mrs. Victoria Egbase said that the statements of the suspects had been taken under caution and that preliminary investigation points to the fact that the various bank accounts were opened to facilitate withdrawal of money outside the country.

Nweke Pauline Osita, an Onitsha based trader who was caught with 65 debit cards said that the cards belong to friends and business partners.
“I am a trader. I sell men clothes at Onitsha. I was on my way to China to buy goods when NDLEA officers arrested me with 65 debit cards. The cards belong to my friends, relatives and business partners” Nweke stated. He hails from Enugu State and married with two children.

The second suspect, Egesiokwu Frank Chukwudi who has a boutique at Aba, Abia State was found in possession of 24 debit cards. The NDLEA chairman has directed that the suspects be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for further Investigation.

Recently, officials of the NDLEA had arrested a trader, Udeh Onuora Pascal who was travelling to China with 108 debit cards. “The arrests is an indication that smuggling of debit cards abroad is one of the latest money laundering techniques employed to evade financial regulations,” the NDLEA said.

This Buhari is a slowpoke. He has frustrated all business and trade in this country. Anambra state business men are already having a tough time with the customs in the state on the amt of cash and dollar they must be carrying for their biz. Thank God for Obiano that came to douse the tension. Can you imagine when they will limit you on the amt of dollars you must carry. This made this innocent guys to be smuggling dollars. I just check my bank on friday and i was told that i cant pay dollars into my Dormiciliary acct. Must i spend my dollars in nigeria for christ sake. Just cheating her citizens. Bank vs black mkt exchange rate even when you buy stuff on line. RECESSION LOOMS LIKE A MONSTER.

Anybody who can't see that this administration is frustrating our economy is blind indeed.

These poor businessmen have been so frustrated by this government that they are being forced to smuggle debit cards in order to buy goods.

What do you want them to do?? Become armed robbers??

this is not issue of corruption but hard govt policies on middle biz men. This is their only alternative to use more of their money to buy goods since the govt policy limits the amt to carry. Buhari is an ecomic failure.

am proud to be an Igbo those guys with 89 atm cards are not criminals neither they are money launderers they are lagal business Men quote me anywhere. have anybody who call them criminals made transactions abroad? i think the cards might represents different individuals whom there partners (i mean trusted partners) are in China to be able to make transfers for the exchange of money with goods bank charges are high now and the required amount to travel with 5000dollars can not buy enough goods that can cover expenses for the trip. tell me how do they become criminal? most our medias houses do not help at all they don't any investigative reporting in this Type a thing conduct a report on why they travel with the cards.

Smuggling of Credit Card abroad through our international airport with the aim of cashing out the money overseas is now a new trend by criminals.

These criminals do it to evade our money laundry laws with the sole aim of diverting it to buy illicit drugs in Brazil, Thailand and Indonesia.

Some of the criminals also do money laundry for corrupt politicians in Nigeria.

The NDLEA should enforced stricter checks at our airport. But they should go and investigate the source of this money and put a stop to the trend.

other countries like USA still have laws against this sort of thing because of the drug cartels in mexico.

erico2k2:

its not, the court will not find them guilty of anything, people be wise,if the cards can be proven not to be stolen then they have no case to answer
if you think out of the Box you will realize they are trying to beat the system o n the daily withdrawal rate of the CBN a law which i think is extremely sill.
Re: NDLEA Arrests 2 China-bound Passengers With 89 Debit Cards by laoma15(m): 7:53pm On Oct 25, 2015
I'm not trying to hold brief for them. But I think they are legitimate traders who are looking for a way to pay their foreign suppliers as a result of CBN policy on foreign exchange transactions.

The maximum withdrawal from ATM outside the Country is $200 or $300 depending on the Bank.

Nigerians will always look for a easy way out, otherwise they don't need to go through all this hazzles.

There are more appropriate ways of making international trade payments.

The government is frustrating genuine business men and making them look like criminals with some of their money transfer/ CBN limitations, honestly.

you can't transfer money, you can't travel with cash, and you open different account with banks which many businesses people does to travel with it since you can no longer transfer or travel with cash it is NOW a problem.but their people are smuggling out money unbehave of there politician to DUBAI from their to any part of the world via Abuja and kano airport.surprise surprise we have never heard of arrest from that root,or the deliberately turned a blind eye to it .every body jubilate because the think it's only igbo people that are involved in a trade in Nigeria,a yoruba guy selling jewelry at idumota his $27000 was confiscated and he was detained but because the have a lot of their people at ikeja airport he was released but the didn't give him his money, when he came back he was looking for less privilege hausa people to beat and people were holding him telling him otito. imagine if that was his last card! he will have to start life from zero.

But in the story(if you read it_ ) The cards are in multiple names which are claimed to be business partners etc.

Now I can iimagine a man giving hi wife or son o brother his card but when you collect 100 cards of different traders from a cooperatie that is entering a new realm. My interest is in whether such commercial activity is envisaged by any of our laws. It may well be that there is no law and it is a grey area as is often the case with "new" technologies

They are just trying to beat the daily withdrawal limits.the probably have 2 weeks Biz visa to china so 12 days to withdraw millions. There is no known laws of the land banning the use of someone else's ATM card with the owners approval as at date not even in the USA or UK.

So you believe if you arrive in the US wih 64 cards bearing different names they will say Welcome to America and wave you through
My position is to ask questions . I don't know the law. What irks me is when someone who knows no more than me tries to bluff as if they know it all . That really does my head in? Where is the intellectual humility in just saying you don't know?
The reality is this sort of activity is governed by LAWS and REGULATIONS. Laws enacted by statute which empower agencies to make regulations which change all the time .The relevant body in this case being the CBN.The CBN makes regulations without recourse to new legislation and that really is what is at stake here

This forum is full of ignorant dunces.y do dey do it? The govt's present policy on foriegn currency transactions is destroying their biz and the govt dnt give a damn. The amount they re allowed to transfer is too meager for them, so they use many accounts like these ones to keep biz on. Its circumveting the system quite alright but buhari's govt seem not to have space for struggling small scale importers.
My bro the ignorance or probably tribal mischeif of yorubas is quiet disgusting. CBN placed a restricion on outward flow of dollars to minimise the impact of oil glut which is obviously affecting business men who import goods into Nigeria. Those men are not fraudstars, they desperately need forex to buy goods

People weh get msr for Australia deh hustle me for track 1 and 2 and sometimes I might nt have an iTunes card to update my iTunes. People who have the best tools sometimes need the simplest of tools. Just saying man.

Even of their intentions are genuine.only if you don't wanna say the truth will you no accept how easy or is to write up people's informations on cards and go spend out there. And getting rampant.
