These is not the kind of fine we expect from NCC.. Inasmuch as MTN Nigeria is not the market favorites. NCC should at least provide enabling environment for business to thrive... May these developments not lead to rippling effects on the job market

5 billion dollars is too small. MTN should pay more than that. DSTV na angel compared to MTN.
Re: Nigeria Fines Telecom Giant MTN $5bn by neocortex: 1:23pm On Oct 26, 2015
This can't be true ,
Fines are usually commensurate to offense.
I doubt if any company in Nigeria can pay up
to $5 Billion tax annually let alone fine.

MTN has been consistently making an average of 700 billion naira annually in profits for the past five years in Nigeria. Figure the rest out for yourself

We need to look beyond the economic implication and insist on this security measures.

With anonymous subscribers and the present security challenges - Boko Haram, it makes it easy to obtain a sim card, wreak havoc without a chance of being traced.

The hefty fine might sound the death knell for MTN however, which despite their abuses should not be encouraged.

FG fines MTN N980bn for failing to disconnect unregistered subscribers

By Zakariya Adaramola with Agency report | Publish Date: Oct 26 2015 11:54AM | Updated Date: Oct 26 2015 1:26PM

The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), the country's telecommunications regulator, has issued mobile phone firm MTN Nigeria, with a $5billion (N980 billion) fine for failing to disconnect subscribers with unregistered Sim cards bought before January 2012.

From that date anyone buying a Sim card in Nigeria has had to register it under their name by law.

When contacted, Funsho Aina, MTN’s Public Relation Manager, confirmed the fine but said the company was preparing a statement to be released later on Monday.

He said MTN is a law abiding company that would not do anything that contradicted NCC’s Acts.

“Yes, it is true we aware but we are doing a statement which will be sent out to you soon. As soon as our boss approves it, we will send it to you. We are law abiding and we have always done our business within the confine of the Acts”, he said.

Telecoms companies were told to register their existing customers' Sim cards, which MTN Nigeria - the biggest telecommunications firm in Nigeria - has failed to do.

The fine is the largest in the history of telecom infringements in Nigeria and may redefine the relationships between telecommunications operators and the regulator.

Nigerians continue to complain about poor services from mobile network operators and blame the regulators for not doing enough to solve the problem.
