I only like MTN whenever I am watching Project fame or whenever I visit their hospital in Lagos, but using them as my first network or pitying them is a no no no for me.
Ha ha. You only Like them when you are watching project fame or visiting their hospital in Lagos. Guess what, if they leave the country, you won't be able to enjoy those facilities.

pls spare me all d sermon where were u wen mtn were busy extorting subscribers all thanks to lack of competitors, nd who tells u they r complaining of nt making enough profit still. it's no point trying to sympathize with them let them pay their fine nd move on after all they were aware of the implications of not adhering to d directives, or they assume they are untouchable or do they take glo nd d rest for fools for disconnecting subscribers lines not properly registered. Nonsense!

You will always feel less concerned when it doesn't concern you. You can look up the number of Nigerians emplyed by MTN then you will appreciate them. MTN will pay the fine and move on but I think this issue of lambasting MTN will stop the moment MTN is quoted in NSE and you invest in it then you will understand how it feels when fines of this nature is slammed on them. Then all Nigerians will run to their rescue to save their investment

They should pay the fine. Simple. They were part of the agreement on the fine regime
Before MTN, there was NITEL. We know how well that institution functioned.

Dont care what y'all say or what NCC does. All I can say with pride is 'MTN IS THE BEST TELCOM COMPANY IN NIGERIA'..if you think otherwise and ur still using an mtn sim, sorry to say but ur more 2-faced than a mythical bicephalic human. Why not just break the sim and never return to it again.Or dont you want 'peace' since mtn is 'stealing' from you.You can port to whatever network that you think will pay your bills for you since humans are in no way satisfied in this world.I dont Even Wanna go ahead with my negative lamentations of what Glo is doing to me.as for etisalat and airtel,i dumped them years ago. Those complaining of mtn are those who normally look away when someone does something good for them.Anyway,no one can please everybody in this world sha.

I dumped MTN since 2004 because of their sharp practices and moved over to Glo. Believe me, I never regretted that decision. It is judgement day for mtn. They violated the law, they must pay the penalty. Pure & simple.

It has always been about the Benjamins for both the NCC and MTN, it isn't as if the NCC suddenly developed a loving heart for nigerians. I will miss MTN if they should call it quits

There's nothing like a good reason for going against the law. I've not used any other network apart from MTN but won't support that they shouldn't be penalized for going against the law. The only thing that can be done to help them is to bring down the fine to a reasonable amount but for them to go un-punished is a NO NO.

Good for them, despite havin BIS on my BB, these bastards went ahead to deduct N685 balance within 30minutes of browsing after subscription, called customer service on 5 diff times each with diff stories as to why my money was deducted while some promised to refund my account, others were putting the blame on me. I just sharply broke their yellow fever sim and inserted my glo.

Dear Nigerians, each time I read comments regarding this MTN penalty madness by NCC, I end up wondering if most of the comments were just for fun or realistic opinion of the commentators both on Nairaland and other top social sites. The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC slammed a N1.4 trillion penalty on MTN Nigeria for failure to disconnect customers with unregistered SIM cards. That fine is outrageous please! We have to stop the sentiments. I don't see MTN paying that huge amount of money. They have given reasons why they were reluctant with the SIM card deactivation thing which I believe is credible and reasonable enough.

We should not forget that MTN has the largest data base of users in Nigeria and they care so much about their customers more than the unfriendly policy.
They wanted a gradual process to the issue which favoured their customers more. Trust most Nigerians, registration of our SIM has always been an issue because of our 'attitudes'. MTN even called some customers, pleaded on many of them and even used free bonuses to encourage subscribers to register and update their SIM but many still refused. That's how we roll in Nigeria smiley Now, deactivating those SIMs would have resulted to severe difficulties for users who had genuine reasons for their inability to update their account.
Yes, MTN violated the law but justice can be tampered with mercy. MTN has done so much for this country: from infrastructural development to massive man power empowerment and development. From educational development to massive entertainment industry boost, in summary, MTN corporate social responsibility programmes are highly commendable and among the best in this country. MTN has changed lives in this country: many people can pay their bills because of this same company. MTN has done so much for us and should be respected please.Their (MTN) investments in the telecom sector have affected other telecom giants positively. This embarrassment against MTN should stop please. MTN is not like all these Indian and Lebanese companies that reserve most juicy management positions for their own citizens only, MTN pays their direct workers (Nigerians) very well unlike most of these foreign companies operating in Nigeria i.e ISON BPO. Top management players in MTN Nigeria are Nigerians. I strongly believe they should be respected and the large data
base and services the company operates here in Nigeria should be considered too. It's not easy to adhere to such rule while having such data base like that of MTN.
For those calling for MTN to leave
I laugh in Chinese and Zulusmiley Yes, if MTN leaves Nigeria, it will surely affect the company heavily but we will suffer it more. Our economy will suffer and unemployment will rise. You are calling on Nigerians to port to Glo and others: wait until any of these telecom companies handle the number of subscribers MTN is currently handling, then you will appreciate MTN better...I can bet you, many of them will collapse! They will not be able to handle such huge traffic.
Those of you calling MTN names
Can you count how many times you have cheated MTN to browse for free? Do you think the infrastructures used for internet services are bought for free? Do you think it is easy to maintain a business in the Nigerian environment with poor power and transportation sectors? Think again please! Don't ever forget that you benefit from MTN directly or indirectly. For those of you crying about MTN promo, did MTN force you into any promo? And most of us don't read terms and conditions of these services and promo from MTN and others.
MTN does not force you to subscribe to any of her services. Yeah, some marketing strategies are deployed to lure customers into certain services but it's still left for you to opt-in and opt-out. I can beat my chest to say that since 2009 I started using MTN line, I have never experienced any reason to accuse them of stealing. I rather say thank you to MTN than accuse MTN of stealing from me. Subscribers make the mistake of subscribing for one service or the other and finally accuse MTN of stealing from them. Some subscribers leave their app running on the background while their airtime gets deducted and they blame it on MTN. You're asking DSTV to leave as if it is DSTV that's working against an indigenous company from doing well in the same market. We complain about MTN and we still don't want to leave them, why? Other telecom companies should compete well with MTN or is it MTN that prevented Glo from taking over other African countries? MTN remains the best network in Nigeria and Africa, take it or leave it. The company should be respected and appreciated too. At least, they accepted to invest in the Nigerian telecom industry back then when other companies where shying away from Nigeria. They made the sector attractive. They made the industry lucrative, they believed in Nigeria when others didn't. I love MTN with my whole heart. Please, we should empathize with them instead of slamming them.

One sided opinion.
My aunt bought their sim they frustrated her with Unnecessary deductions, Their (phone) customer care are on a mission to ruin them 'cos they're so rude.... They do this & that for Nigeria, do you have an idea how much they rake in 'cos the writer is typing like they're doing Nigeria a Favour....
If not for Glo & Etisalat that came with lower charges, they will continue ripping us off.
I personally don't like them + their home country is xenophobic, they hate Nigerians.
Though the fine is too much.

At most - Unemployment, tax & CSR. We can deal with that. Another company Will replace them with immediate effect.

It's the same people ranting here that did not comply when asked to register. Hypocrisy won't let Nigeria move forward.

This is another reason why Nigeria has not moved forward.

@ OP and co-travellers, are you doing a PR job for MTN or looking for patronage on your blog site?

Is MTN the only Telco in Nigeria? Why does it willfully defy every directive from the regulatory agency?

If you care to know, all the telcos are aware that a fine of 200k for a single line is payable by any Telco which fails to update its subscribers database.

Did MTN claim to be unaware of this?

Did you know that the same MTN is currently being investigated for tax evasion in some African countries including Nigeria?
Yes, it has consistently been shipping a larger chunk of its profit to nonexistent shell companies in UAE and Mauritius.

I don't even want to drag you into details but the CSR it does which you have applauded actually is for its benefits. Yes, companies get tax reliefs for doing CSR.
It is all business kiddo and not charity.

Lastly, if MTN decides to move, it wouldn't definitely move its base stations and other infrastructure, it will simply sell it which is a win situation for Nigeria as the investors will pump in money into the economy.

Nice one.

Oga pls!!! Do not thank mtn, thank Obasanjo for bringing in gsm to naija.

If not for airtel wey dey change management like cloth mtn wouldnt hav held us spellbound all these years. Coupled with our corrupt politicians and an NCC that had hitherto been shackled with bribes (not that they r now corruptn-free o bt at least they all r nw mindful of their conduct), mtn wouldnt had the effrontery to treat the common man like they always do.

God bless glo and etisalat for us, let mtn go back to its south africa pple r waiting to buy them and wave them goodbye sef. They cant try 0.1% of the poo they throw at us here in southafrica. Good penalty, i must say, let them keep paying!

We stand to gain more should MTN leave Nigeria this morning. GLO, ETISALAT, AIRTEL and others are doing awesomely well. Interms of browsing speed ETISALAT beats MTN, is it call rate? Which area is MTN better than the others. Seriously I can't wait for MTN to pack their luggage. Truth is they are going no where. Their subscribers in Nigeria are about the population of South Africa. In the stock market they are not, and others are emulating them. They know that the public gains more if they enlist in the stock market.
They're already on their way out. One of the reasons why they want to be listed on Nigeria Stock Exchange So they can see something to hold on to. For over 10 yrs, why didn't they go to NSE.
Check the rate of Customer subscribers on NCC website, MTN is the least with a 0.44% increase while Glo,Etisalat & Airtel are leading the pack.

If they leave, today, the other 3 will take their Customers, expand their outlets, employe people, pay higher tax and more CSR policy. Better still another company Will replace them.

I think they shld add free calls and data for 5 months to all their customers as part of the penalty sef. I almost cried the day MTN took over N300 airtime from me and claim it was used for browsing even while I had an existing data plan and repeated the same thing few weeks later. MTN MUST learn this very expensive lesson at not taking Nigeria for granted like they have enjoyed doing in the past, thinking they are above the law. They are a very evil capitalist gang of crooks like many others, who will NEVER put Nigeria first. What with the billions of dollars they secretly and illegally export out of the country to secret accounts in offshore tax havens.

They MUST pay the money. And yes, they can afford it easily, even double. Worst case scenario is that there will be no dividend payment for shareholders and less money (not no money) for the very criminal fat cat directors.

Some crooks already sold off massive amounts of shares on the JSE before the information went public. Now that price has fallen up to 20% and might fall even more, they will buy back. Buy with them, don't dull, because the share price will rise again because mtn will overcome this bump in just a little time.

Only Nigeria and Nigerians can put Nigeria first, but with the quality of leadership we have been cursed with, this remains a pipe dream and the MTNs of this world will continue, with the help of our leaders, the joint rape and pillaging of our beloved country. cry

@op, ur defence of the lawless act of MTN is not acceptable my me. The only thing it reminds me is to call their customers care before the will leave if the contemplate it at all. Last Monday the charged N5 on a 1 sec call duration I made. So Mtn lawyer, that was a mistake for sure! If you think mtn has done u a lot good which is right, u have done a lot more good to them. Its not even symbiosis at all. My only advice to them is to upgrade to the change mantra we are in. Defaulters will not go free. Thanks.

They thought PMB was joking when they were summoned by the presidency regarding the SIM registration, they ignored the deadline. Then chief Olu Falae abductors uses unregistered MTN lines to communicate, security personnel approach them for the user info, they cannot provide. They now fined them some people now behaving like a good samaritan. The issue of reprieve is beyond NCC.
Don't forget our current VP Osinbajo is a private investors in MTN, am sure that would aggravate the issue for them.

Please, I want to ask, U don't like MTN cos u bought ur SIM for 10K or because they've been ripping 'you' off or the two?

How old are you? So sorry to ask but your response shows you don't know what you are saying. Mtn sold their sim as high as 50,000 when they commenced operation. I bought mine for 23,000 in 2002. At that time they charged 50 Naira per/min even if it's 1 second gba they take your 50naira. Until glo came and every thing changed.
My mtn line has turn to my second line, I don't buy credit anymore on same, how can mtn charge me 1,500 Naira for 500mb when glo is charging 1,000 Naira for 3.1gb.
Nigeria is their largest customer and it showed in the fluctuation of their stock in SA.
Finally, they are not good to their staffs I know first hand my wife works for mtn.
They should pay the fine to serve as a deterrent to others.
