Just a quick question though: why have they been flaunting directives since 2009?
There is no directive ncc wud pass across they wud willingly obey. Is it because itz now getting into their head that they r major players in nigerian telco n comtributes to d gdp . They now feel we need them more than they need us? They want to b treated like sacred cows just like our politicians? Huh?

Nobody is above the law, if they must continue operation here, they have to abide by ncc directives.

That money will be paid by Nigerians..so dont be surprised if your tarrif drops by 20naira and you will harly know and if this happens many times randonly in like 5months i gueess the money go complete judging by the millions of subscribers.

I am happy about the fine.......the bad news was that we Nigerians will be the one to pay the fine indirectly.
100naira has already been deducted from my MTN sim account today without subscribing for any package. MTN is really a dubious network. I want NCC to look into the illegal deduction of money from MTN.
100 naira no go do anything o , I don't think MTN has more than 50 million active subscribers , with that figure they'll need 28000 from each subscriber to offset a fine of 1.4 trillion naira

This is another reason why Nigeria has not moved forward.

@ OP and co-travellers, are you doing a PR job for MTN or looking for patronage on your blog site?

Is MTN the only Telco in Nigeria? Why does it willfully defy every directive from the regulatory agency?

If you care to know, all the telcos are aware that a fine of 200k for a single line is payable by any Telco which fails to update its subscribers database.

Did MTN claim to be unaware of this?

Did you know that the same MTN is currently being investigated for tax evasion in some African countries including Nigeria?
Yes, it has consistently been shipping a larger chunk of its profit to nonexistent shell companies in UAE and Mauritius.

I don't even want to drag you into details but the CSR it does which you have applauded actually is for its benefits. Yes, companies get tax reliefs for doing CSR.
It is all business kiddo and not charity.

Lastly, if MTN decides to move, it wouldn't definitely move its base stations and other infrastructure, it will simply sell it which is a win situation for Nigeria as the investors will pump in money into the economy.

A master stroke. Thank you sir!

What exactly does NCC full of semi Illiterate know about telecom?
They bring out difficult policies and slam them on telecom industries without sitting down to discuss with them first.

It's like the BVN thing.
The animals gave a deadline without considering many factors.
Some things are done gradually, not forcing them down people.

Anybody who complain about MTN is a lazy semi Illiterate who could not read terms before subscribing to what they don't know.

Dear Nigerians, each time I read comments regarding this MTN penalty madness by NCC, I end up wondering if most of the comments were just for fun or realistic opinion of the commentators both on Nairaland and other top social sites. The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC slammed a N1.4 trillion penalty on MTN Nigeria for failure to disconnect customers with unregistered SIM cards. That fine is outrageous please! We have to stop the sentiments. I don't see MTN paying that huge amount of money. They have given reasons why they were reluctant with the SIM card deactivation thing which I believe is credible and reasonable enough.

We should not forget that MTN has the largest data base of users in Nigeria and they care so much about their customers more than the unfriendly policy.
They wanted a gradual process to the issue which favoured their customers more. Trust most Nigerians, registration of our SIM has always been an issue because of our 'attitudes'. MTN even called some customers, pleaded on many of them and even used free bonuses to encourage subscribers to register and update their SIM but many still refused. That's how we roll in Nigeria smiley Now, deactivating those SIMs would have resulted to severe difficulties for users who had genuine reasons for their inability to update their account.
Yes, MTN violated the law but justice can be tampered with mercy. MTN has done so much for this country: from infrastructural development to massive man power empowerment and development. From educational development to massive entertainment industry boost, in summary, MTN corporate social responsibility programmes are highly commendable and among the best in this country. MTN has changed lives in this country: many people can pay their bills because of this same company. MTN has done so much for us and should be respected please.Their (MTN) investments in the telecom sector have affected other telecom giants positively. This embarrassment against MTN should stop please. MTN is not like all these Indian and Lebanese companies that reserve most juicy management positions for their own citizens only, MTN pays their direct workers (Nigerians) very well unlike most of these foreign companies operating in Nigeria i.e ISON BPO. Top management players in MTN Nigeria are Nigerians. I strongly believe they should be respected and the large data
base and services the company operates here in Nigeria should be considered too. It's not easy to adhere to such rule while having such data base like that of MTN.
For those calling for MTN to leave
I laugh in Chinese and Zulusmiley Yes, if MTN leaves Nigeria, it will surely affect the company heavily but we will suffer it more. Our economy will suffer and unemployment will rise. You are calling on Nigerians to port to Glo and others: wait until any of these telecom companies handle the number of subscribers MTN is currently handling, then you will appreciate MTN better...I can bet you, many of them will collapse! They will not be able to handle such huge traffic.
Those of you calling MTN names
Can you count how many times you have cheated MTN to browse for free? Do you think the infrastructures used for internet services are bought for free? Do you think it is easy to maintain a business in the Nigerian environment with poor power and transportation sectors? Think again please! Don't ever forget that you benefit from MTN directly or indirectly. For those of you crying about MTN promo, did MTN force you into any promo? And most of us don't read terms and conditions of these services and promo from MTN and others.
MTN does not force you to subscribe to any of her services. Yeah, some marketing strategies are deployed to lure customers into certain services but it's still left for you to opt-in and opt-out. I can beat my chest to say that since 2009 I started using MTN line, I have never experienced any reason to accuse them of stealing. I rather say thank you to MTN than accuse MTN of stealing from me. Subscribers make the mistake of subscribing for one service or the other and finally accuse MTN of stealing from them. Some subscribers leave their app running on the background while their airtime gets deducted and they blame it on MTN. You're asking DSTV to leave as if it is DSTV that's working against an indigenous company from doing well in the same market. We complain about MTN and we still don't want to leave them, why? Other telecom companies should compete well with MTN or is it MTN that prevented Glo from taking over other African countries? MTN remains the best network in Nigeria and Africa, take it or leave it. The company should be respected and appreciated too. At least, they accepted to invest in the Nigerian telecom industry back then when other companies where shying away from Nigeria. They made the sector attractive. They made the industry lucrative, they believed in Nigeria when others didn't. I love MTN with my whole heart. Please, we should empathize with them instead of slamming them.
http://iamkingsleyokoro..com.ng/2015/10/ncc-fines-mtn-nigeria.html

U work for them and you're scared of getting layed off if NCC continue punishing them. Well, all south African companies should be sent back home. They have too much power, imagine MTN calling me at 3am, sending me like 10 useless consecutive promo messages every morning. Dem never see anything. Dstv own go soon start.
Re: We Nigerians Are Unfair To MTN by Charly68: 8:50am On Oct 31, 2015
The economic consequences of mtn failure are too numerous to mention. Nobody can do what they are doing in South Africa..the company will face the law . Why should they be allowed to come to Nigeria & behave as if there is no law & order in the society ..I think NCC is write on their penalty..Penalty has to be burdensome to serve as a deterrent factor to others.
Re: We Nigerians Are Unfair To MTN by Myde4naija(m): 8:50am On Oct 31, 2015
You are very unfair to yourself with this op, you think you are making sense but you are actually not. Mtn admitted they have fault the law and you are here wyning and shouting NCC and Nigerians are unfair. Let me ask you unfair for what? For giving Mtn enabling environment to establish and operate their business and make many billions of dollars. Or unfair for not sanctioning them for not remitting their tax regularly? I don't know.....Mtn are expert in disrespecting Nigeria law and I think they must be penalised for it
Re: We Nigerians Are Unfair To MTN by satos123(m): 8:50am On Oct 31, 2015
If NCC ask MTN to a fine it just a small token because wen MTN are selling fast link then did u know much they make then MTN used dat fast link to milk Nigerian's pocket simply because d faster link is worsened link. No pity

Your post is the most sensible of all I've read so far.

This mumu op is saying MTN hasn't cheated on us whereas they do it on a daily. For every fine from NCC, MTN takes it out of their customers.

Call and data tariffs are shifted, unexplainable deductions are made and they lie to you that you subscribed for a package and they don't make refunds like Etisalat or Glo.

Before MTN, there was NITEL. We know how well that institution functioned.

If you work for mtn and you're scared of lay off, then it's fine. Otherwise, you're an I.d.I.o.t

I'll be disappointed if NCC backpedal on this. It means our rules are useless. The banks fined by CBN have paid and moved on, let mtn pay and move on.
Re: We Nigerians Are Unfair To MTN by Nobody: 8:58am On Oct 31, 2015
@Op I don't buy those points you stated. You might be right anyway but MTN swallowed heavy customers all because they came into the Nigerian market very early compared to other networks. As regards your thinking that MTN has done heavy projects. My friend don't get it twisted that for every project this company embark on, they get more than 1000% returns. Take for instance "who want to be a millionaire", do you know how much that show generates for MTN weekly? They have stepped on the law, they should face the consequence!! Moreover no one is above the law!!

I remember vividly at the onset of GSM services in Nigeria and we were told by MTN then that per second billing was not possible in Nigeria and we were made to pay per minute notwithstanding you spend less than 60s because of some reasons, and we were all paying through our nose because we don't have option. But immediately Glo came on board and started per second billing it was then MTN started billing us per second. now the question is " WAS IT REALLY FAIR ON MTN ON WHAT THEY DID TO NIGERIANS AFTER TELLING US THAT WHAT WAS IMPOSSIBLE WAS VERY POSSIBLE".

This OP I very *****. He certainly do not know the reason for the sim registration! That SIM registration is to improve security I Nigeria. An company that sabotage Nigeria's security need to be hammered well a good! Can MTN disregard directive like that in South Africa?

MT know the law. The law specify the fine of 200k per line not registered but functional. Instead of Nigerians to support govt agencies that are working to protect us from kidnappers, we are supporting MTN that only care for their pockets.
Why NCC is coming hard in MTN is simple. MTN could not provide details of the sim owner used to communicate with Falae's family when asked. That information would have speeded up their arrest.

@ op, it is because of people like u that make other countries say all sort of nonesense about naija. They view us as a lawless country where any thing goes. Contribute to destroy our own while they protect and build theirs. Go to sa, can u go against their own policy and go free? Same mtn that will deceive you with bonus offer and the next minute all your credit is wiped out. Before they are bill like that do u know how much they get?

Typical thinking of a government with no direction. Why do you want to profit from someone's loss? Instead of a state to think of how to create better enabling environments for entrepreneurs to succeed and further get more tax.
We should be pushing for more inclusiveness in the operations of this company rather than choking them to death and making and making millions unemployed due to the ripple effect of downsizing.
Is a giving that revenues have dropped and the country is going into recession if the trend is not stopped, but government policies should consider the existing business we have that is managing to contribute to the little revenues we are getting and continue to use the "carrot and stick" method rather than just wielding the big stick.
