“Thanks for accompanying me to school even though you don’t have lectures today.” Jennifer to Kross as they made for the lecture hall.

“It’s okay. I didn’t have anything doing anyways. You saved me from boredom in a way.” he replied.

She smiled and held him close on seeing a familiar figure ahead, sitting at the garden with someone else.

Kross had assisted Jennifer in reviving her career. He knew someone who knows someone that knows another someone in the industry which Jennifer was into. So it was easy for him to ask for favor on her behalf and it was granted. It wasn’t as huge as her previous one, but it was a stepping stone to what Sadiq and Vanessa had taken from her by tarnishing her image.

Talking about Vanessa, the figure Jennifer sighted sitting at the garden was Vanessa. She was with her course mate and they seemed to be flipping through a bulky handout. It was the first time she was seeing Vanessa since the fund raiser.

Almost as if Vanessa could feel the presence of Jennifer permeating the air, she raised her head and behold she saw Jennifer accompanied by same guy she had seen her with days ago. Now she was convinced that they were a couple.

“Isn’t that your friend?” Kross asked Jennifer, referring to Vanessa.

“Who told you we are friends?” she asked.

“Everyone knows that.” he claimed.

“Everyone knows that?” she asked infuriated. “Does ‘everyone’ know how she connived with someone else and they destroyed my career? Does ‘everyone’ know this?”

“No. I didn’t know that.” he answered surprised.

“I didn’t think so. Don’t ever call her my friend again. Ever!” she ranted, eyed Vanessa who was looking at their direction and pulled Kross with her as she increased her pace

“O…kay.” he replied, jerking forward.

Back in the city of Kano.

“I had one of those dreams again.” Humaira said, feeling feverish. “I could have sworn that the buildings in the dreams looked familiar, like i have been there before.”

She was at the balcony with Sadiq who had taken a break from the book he was working on. A subtle breeze blew across their faces, giving them a relaxing feeling which was far more relaxing than the nightmare Humaira had last night.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Sadiq asked concerned.

“Of course.” she replied. “It was an unusual dream just like all the others I had that came true. Very surreal, eerie and blur. I couldn’t see much except the sky which was covered by mist, almost like a thick smoke from a huge fire. And I was being carried by someone. It was so terrifying because i couldn’t see the person’s face. The only real thing my sight got hold of was one building, I can’t remember the description, but it looked very familiar. I can’t remember where I’ve seen it before.”

Sadiq was shocked.

“Did anything else happen?”

“No. I didn’t let it. I woke up immediately and couldn’t go back to sleep. I was petrified! My legs seemed disabled like i couldn’t walk with them, as if I use clutches.” she explained.

“Does this means you dreamt of what will happen to you?” he asked, trying to figure his dream relationship with hers.

“No, that’s how my dreams come whenever I dream about what is about to happen to someone else. The only thing I know now is the girl is a disable who uses clutches but i don’t know the person carrying her. If only I can remember where I saw that building I think I may be able to stop this dream from happening.” she said, thinking and trying to replay the dream in her head. But it was as clear as a misty night. Not much to be remembered.

Sadiq couldn’t tell her he had the same exact dream. Anything that terrified him he couldn’t divulge it to anyone. When he first had that terrifying dream about Asmau he didn’t tell anyone, not even his mother. He just thought things were safe if no one else knows about it. But in this situation whereby Humaira could actually be able to help and stop the dream from happening he thought he might as well tell her. But again the fact that it was about death and it had to do with him made him more terrified because he didn’t want to believe that such thing could happen to him.

In fact he decided he was probably like Humaira. Maybe his dream wasn’t about him. Maybe the person in the dream carrying the lady was someone else. Maybe he could see how other people would die. Maybe he was like Humaira! And so he convinced himself and didn’t tell her about the dream.

As they say, your greatest enemy is; you…yourself.

Weeks later Vanessa concluded her exams and was sure she won’t fail a course or get below average. Sadiq’s advice had been the cynosure that gave her the will to study hard. Even though they were far apart he still played a big part in her life.

She was in her department hall, walking hurriedly, texting on her phone. And ‘bang’ she bumped onto someone and her phone fell to the ground.

“My phone!” she almost screamed, bending down to pick it up before looking at the fellow.

“I am sorry. I didn’t see you coming. And you weren’t paying attention to where you were going too.” he apologized and faulted her as well.

She recognized his face. The guy she had been seeing with Jennifer.

“It’s fine. My bad too.” she replied as she made to leave.

“Wait!” he halted her. “You are Vanessa right?”

She wasn’t surprise. Jennifer must have talked about her to him. But she pretended as though she didn’t know.

“How did you know my name? We haven’t met before have we?” she asked.

“No no. Not at all.” he replied. “I have seen your face on a popular blog before. You are very famous.”

She blushed! These are the kind of things she loved. Especially the word ‘famous’. It made her feel important and well talked about.

She flung her hair backward. “Yes i am.” her ego rising.

He acted embarrassed and requested. “I am one of your many male fans. Would be lovely to have your autograph.”

A smile formed on her face, revealing how pleased she was to hear that.

“Where do I sign it?” she asked.

“My heart!” he replied.

She stared at him for a minute and asked.

“Pardon me…your heart?”

He brought out a book that had the drawing of a love heart.

“Yes. This heart.” he handed it to her.

“Oh!” she replied embarrassingly. She was under the impression that he was hitting on her. “There it is.” She handed it back to him after signing on it.

He looked at it as though something was missing.

“Anything wrong with it?” she asked.

“Yes. You didn’t include your phone number.” he replied with seriousness.

She laughed.

“What do you want my number for? I thought you wanted just my autograph?”

“Yes I did. But then I realized that once we go our separate ways I won’t be able to hear your dulcetly charming voice again!” he said and there was no smile on his face.

She blushed. He was definitely hitting on her and she wasn’t going to decline!

“I don’t give strangers my number.” she formed.

“I am not a stranger anymore. You already signed on my heart.” he said to her amazement.

“Aren’t you dating someone?” she asked not wanting to mention Jennifer nor let him know that she knows about their relationship.

“I am single.” he replied yet with that serious look on his face.

“Really?” Vanessa asked.

“Honestly. Although there is this girl I am with but I promise you we aren’t dating. I cross my heart and hope to die.” he said.

“Okay fair enough.” she called her number to him. “Bye.” She turned to leave.

“Wait!” he said. “Let me call the number to be sure you gave me the right number.” he dialed her number seconds later her phone rang.

She smiled at him and left.
